WCE didn’t win a flag because of this trade. They won one for a whole heap of reasons. Just Carlton didn’t get to flag because of this trade, it was for a whole heap of reasons.

Thats it in a nutshell. You can trot out the 'premierships are the only thing that matter's line and declare WC 'won' the trade if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy, the obvious fact is there are a heap of factors just as pertinent as Kennedy in WC's current situation and a heap that are definitely more pertinent than Judd in Carlton's.

Kinda moot point anyway (evaluating the trade as if there was a 'choice' not to do it). Every club in the league does that trade in a heartbeat if they can, and those with the picks were going just as hard as Carlton - we just happened to have the extra pick.

People saying 'Kennedy won a premiership with WC, Judd didn't with Carlton' as a basis for their argument that West Coast 'won' the trade really have no clue.
MAte Kennedy was a crucial part of our flag. As good as Judd was Carlton didn’t achieve any great success with him. Kennedy has contributed massively to the eagles success

For starters disposal numbers where a lot lower back in the mid 2000’s Kerr Judd and cuz averaged about mid to low 20’s per game and are widely considered the best trio of mids to play the game. I’d trade anyone on our list for anyone of them at the respective peaks now. And secondly go watch some actual games of football Judd’s best from 04-07 is unlikely to be seen again
Judd from 2004 to 2007 was unbelievable his pace, his acceleration, long range goals. He Kerr, and cousins were outstanding and only needed a few disposals to hurt you.

Judd got let down by Carlton’s recruiting after he arrived. Lucas, Watson and Yarran among others with top picks, yuck. Sacking Ratten was also a bonehead move but the poor drafting would have stuffed him too. They were pretty handy in 2011.

I think the trade is still a win-win with us ahead, but the Judd side of the equation would have been better if his team didn’t let him down.

Yeo how we got him for what we did is still beyond belief. He is a gun, contested marking beast and explosive.

It was unfortunate for the Lions. He was the one who wanted to ‘go home’ that the Lions were most upset about as they saw his potential yet got bent over.

Eagles got their flag with Judd, then got another with Kennedy.
Winner winner, chicken wing dinner.

Kennedy - premiership key forward
Masten - premiership winger

Pretty happy with how that went down

And to think they wouldn’t give us pick 1 as they wanted to use it on Kreuzer

So they gave us Kennedy instead!

Happy days!
Sliding doors.

Imagine if Kruezer got to learn his craft from Dean Cox, if he'd stayed injury free.

That's some crazy s**t.

Another premiership player.
Winner, winner.....and winner again ✅

I think that west coast won,but not at carltons expense. Trading Judd meant you dropped down the ladder and got some high draft picks before the expansion sides weakened the draft so much . West coast lost Judd, but got Kennedy, Masten as a result, as well the trade resulting in natanui with the pick 2 you wouldnt have got if judd stayed, keeping you mid table in 2008.

A very good point in hindsight. How much of the expansion stuff was announced in 2007, none of it really. We botched a few picks too with Notte, Swift, Weedon among others as well as Ebert leaving.

When the trade was made, many of us predicted the following:
Based on what Carlton are paying Judd, they will not have the salary cap space to draft/recruit other players to have the depth of talent to contend for a flag.
Eagles have the possibility of 10 plus years with two high but unproven draft picks - one key position player and one midfielder, plus another end of first round draft pick. They work out how they should, they could be critical players in West Coast's next premiership tilt.

Given how things have turned out, and particularly given that Carlton returned to being a basketcase as soon as Judd's career finished without ever contending for a flag, if that is not winning a trade as a result of significantly better list management, I don't know what is.
