Two ways of looking at it. Perhaps the AFL's ongoing deal is only extraordinarily high this time round because they finally acceded to a lot of the broadcaster demands from before this point. Thursday fixtures and not prioritising free-to-air preferences for non-Melbourne games for AFL growth strategic reasons. Kayo/Fox penetration for AFL in Perth/Adelaide has always been low and there's always been a cultural acceptance (in part due to greater difficulty in accessing matchday tickets compared to Melbourne) that those four teams' games would be on free-to-air. AFL has always left a bit of money on the table by allowing for it until they chipped away at it a bit here.
Keep in mind that NRL has oriented its schedule to be more broadcaster-friendly - no doubt at the cost to some extent to ticketing revenue growth but also long-term health - in order to get their TV deal - games beginning at 6pm on Friday, etc.

The afl deal was extraordinarily high and from certain reported stories this year it seems like broadcasters don’t feel like they’re getting the best bang for their buck. This might also explain things like state of origin and wildcard round, giving more content for broadcasters. I don’t think it’s a given at all that the nrl deal will match this let alone exceed it. If they matched it it would be a major achievement for the nrl and PVL no doubt about it.

So, what I've taken from the arguments here, is that -
1)The NRL are fudging their TV ratings in a futile attempt to delude their supporters and TV Networks in an effort to get a better TV Rights Deal.
2) The NRL are using pokkies and the Government to prop themselves up at the expense of peoples lives.
3) The NRL only use 'Average' Ratings as a metric for popularity, choosing to completely ignore overall revenue, attendance, membership, internet activity and reach as indicators.
Have I missed anything?

The NRL arent fudging their ratings. They are promoting the standard of ratings that has existed since 2003 - and is still accepted by most people not on bigfooty.
By the same token, the AFL arent fudging their ratings either - they STILL aggegate average ratings, but Seven focus on reach.
And even if they were, the Networks own Oztam and can see the data regardless of what the NRL and AFL say.
1. Not true, they're reporting on standard metrics that have been in place for years. For some reason people here think there is a conspiracy theory between the NRL and tv networks to make the NRL numbers look better, which is complete tin foil wearing and copium fueled lunacy.
2. The NRL and most of its clubs have a diversified revenue model that makes them more stable and less reliant on central handouts from the NRL or football-only revenue sources like many AFL clubs where a bunch would be gone if they didn't get substantial more funding than other more self-sufficent clubs. They also work with governments in a similar way to the AFL.
3. How many people watch a sport is a pretty good proxy for popularity don't you think? Revenue is a by product of many things. Attendance is another good proxy of popularity. TV = NRL, Attendance = AFL, Social media = NRL, Revenue = AFL, Membership=NA, not a good proxy for anything given the state of membership types these days and the over-reliance of them to boost AFL club revenues

AFL clubs are first and foremost sporting clubs with members that are the reason these clubs exist, that some pay less, or nothing is irrelevant.
I don't think that's true in practice. Andrew Dillon played over 200 games at the ammo level, McLachlan played plenty of ammos, etc. You don't do that without loving your sport.
The problem for the last two - Gil in particular - is that, look, they have Big Punchable Face energy. It doesn't help that he played polo, was an old Private School boy, and went on to become CEO of TabCorp where he could screw people over without any kind of pretence to community-mindedness.

3. My mum watched a bit of the snoop pre show for the afl grand final, but didn’t watch the game and has no interest. You’d be ok to count her as a ‘follower’ ‘fan’ ‘viewer’ etc. that’s your own prerogative, but that’s not how OzTAM ranks shows.

NRL is a better run league, I am an AFL fan and although I do admit the AFL definitely winning in terms of revenue.

Two more teams for the NRL to fill over the next few years, in Perth and PNG which won't be the easiest sell in the world to prospective players and a serious competitor with deep pockets in R360 is going to be a proper pain in their arse.

I said it earlier in the thread but I'll say it again for fun, why can't people be normal and just enjoy two great sports for what they are? They aren't comparable, they're different, they both add value and entertainment.

If R360 takes off as a sustainable venture, it'll be quite interesting to see what the impact on both the NRL and AFL will be.
Say the Saudis successfully internationalise rugby league with a strong cohort of Australian players, enabled by a larger financial backing than either the NRL and the AFL could dream of... I could see how it would cannibalise from both codes.
The prospect of $1.5m tax-free salaries could be quite the enticement for any young players weighing up which code to devote themselves to.

How would R360 make any real impact to AFL? There is a relatively small overlap of player types between rugby codes and AFL.
I don't even think R360 will make a meaningful impact to the NRL, they might take a bunch of players who want to cash in a big payday, the NRL will easily absorb this as they have done done when people have left for the Wallabies, but the comp is all smoke and mirrors and player agents are using it to push up the salaries of their players.
R360 is saying the players can live anywhere.. Where are these teams based, how and when do they train, where are their high performance centres, do they have back of house staff hired, what about coaches etc etc Just to spin up a meaningful competiton overnight by stealing players from established leagues that have developed their own players, even with a bunch of saudi money, seems a bit rich.
In the long term, if R360 is successful and is still around, sure I could see how young athletes might decide its better to get 1.5-3m per year tax free salary and play 12 games a year around the world.. but thats a big IF. They already have soccer, NFL, etc to look up to where they can make way more money than any Australian competition could dream of.
