Oh dear West Torrens, has there ever been a more pathetic club. My grandmother barracked for them in her early days whilst living in Thebarton but switched to Port, i just shudder to think what it would have been like if i'd been exposed to the WTFC as a kid. More than even Woodville and South, i associate Torrens with mediocrity.

Torrens supporters were the worst whingers in the SANFL, no question. Even worse than the Bays supporters. You can still pick 'em out at a Crows home game among the older members of the crowd.

Does anyone remember they used to show the reserves game live on TV on a Sat afternoon. And that boring commentator with his slow drawn out voice on the abc. It used to make me so angry as a child that when the reserves match ended the entire coverage stopped and I had to put the radio on

I only remember one thing about the reserves being on tv, and that was Eddie Fry kicking a goal in a Sturt v South game or something. Dont know why that sticks in my memory but it does!

With the ABC commentary...I used to like the Darryl Hicks/Mark Aiston/David Basheer commentary back in the late 80s early 90s.

I remember Denis Errey and Dean Davis calling reserves games on 9 in the early 70s and I think 7 had the ressies for a while in the mid-70s because I remember Sandy Roberts calling games. Had the pleasure of meeting Sandy once way back then and he admitted, as I suspected, he was a Norwood man.

In all his years commentating, i don't think i understood one thing Darryl Hicks said.

I really enjoyed the ABC commentary team when Gerry Harrison commentated, i think with David Darcy.

The one thing I remember...watching a very young C. Bradley in (I think) '83 reserves GF vs Glenelg...

Takes possession on the defensive side of the centre square, moves to play on, stops dead in his tracks. Holds the ball out in one hand and *walks* forward... until a Glenelg player runs at him, and he *steps* casually out of the way, *walks* forwards, again, and then, again at walking pace, steps casually past the next player to try running at him. Genius in the making. So funny to watch.

Originally from the UK (was 9 years old) none of my family followed football.

I started playing footy in Grade 7 and represented Central Districts in the Mini League so I became a Centrals fan.

A year after I met my first girlfriend who was a Port supporter. Love for her made me switch and for that I am eternally thankfull.

The strange thing is my brother was a Port supporter when I followed Centrals and he switched (dont know why) to Centrals. He is now unfortunately a Cow Moron. Oh well

born and bred port supporter
it was a part of my genetic make up
grandmother was as one eyed port supporter as they come which followed through to my mum and myself

I too have alot of memories of being either behind the goals at Alberton (which ever way port was kicking...) with my footy, and decked out in my Port gear... rain hail or shine i was always there. My dad even though he was a South supporter took me every week to Alberton because he knew how much i loved my maggies

are we related? ...

My dad was south (his war mates played at South) but his mum (my grandmother) was die hard Port and influenced my choice of team and as we lived in Port Adelaide ... thankfully - who else was I going to support. Dad took me along each week in the 1960s when I was a little tacker and as I got older I was in the cheer squad in my teenage years. We were blessed with so many great years and teams until 1990. Not proud that I went to Crows games (to see AFL live ) until we got what we should have had originally ... our own place in the AFL.

I have supported us passionately in the AFL until this year when work committments have meant not being able to go to many home games plus I have tired of our club/players/coaches letting us down ... but I and our team I'm sure will soon be back!!

Gerry Harrison and Darryl Hicks were brilliant.
Watched the 1988 GF last night, and when Richard Foster picks up a loose ball in the Port forward line, and snaps a great goal - you hear Harrison bellow "FOSTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"....as Scott Salisbury and David Brown start the expected third quarter biffo....brilliant.

Thats the guy I was thinking of - Darryl Hicks. He sounded like a hick from country Queensland or something. Was slowwwww. I remember Ian Day who sounded alright. Graham Campbell was funny (I think that was his name). I think even Kym Dillon commentated on the abc

I always enjoyed Peter Marker's commentary. He especially loved Rohan Smith IIRC.
Didn't much like Per Mucka, as KG called him, as a player but he wasn't a bad commentator. Quite an intelligent bloke unlike many of the burnt out old dolts that end up in the commentary box.

Beat Norwood in the '83 ressies GF.

IIRC, we fell behind by about three goals in the last quarter before storming home.

Not a bad line-up...

F: Andy Porplycia, Chris Natt, Ross Agius
HF: Roger Delaney, Danny Hughes, Des Drogemuller
C: Michael Errey, Craig Bradley, Greg Boyd
HB: Len Warren, Martin Leslie, Brenton Owens
B: Darren Smith, Tony Dutch, Ivan Eckerman
R: David Baker, Alan Gill, Arlen Kennedy
Int: Craig Lum, David O'Donovan
E: Wayne Mahney

Very impressive looking for a reserves side.

Bradley would have been 19 and just starting his career but I wonder how some of those guys qualified for the ressies finals. IIRC Leslie was a regular in the seniors that year. Guys like Porplycia, Warren and Eckerman were coming to the ends of their careers as all had played in the '77 GF. Chris Natt was around in the late '70's as well.

I dont smoke, but when ever I smell cigarette smoke now it reminds me of old SANFL games in the late 1980s.

Well, it was worth it then :p

Used to watch half of the reserves, before heading off to the game :thumbsu:

...I wonder how some of those guys qualified for the ressies finals.

Some were at the start of their careers (Smith, Delaney), others struggled to get a league game but hung around for a while (Agius, Lum, Errey, Warren, Owens) and a few had brief league careers (Drogemuller, Dutch, O'Donovan)

But the old rule was that if you didn't play the last minor round game in the league team, you were eligible for the reserves finals.

That's why Braddles and Hughes played in the reserves finals.

Braddles didn't play in the league side again after that dramatic one point loss to West at Richmond in Round 15.

(Bloods came from five goals down with about ten minutes to go).

That loss effectively ended our spluttering, injury-plagued season.

Being without Braddles, who was perhaps the dominant player in the comp that year*, for the last seven games killed us.

Des Drogemuller won the Ressies Magarey in '83. As an eight year-old I immediately assumed he was gonna be a star in the league team for years to come. Not quite.

*Bays fans might argue otherwise.

IIRC Leslie was a regular in the seniors that year...

A regular in '82 but only played 4 games in '83 because of injury.

Ebert filled in as a stop-gap CHB for a time...

Mahney! He tried roughing up Carey one game at Alberton. Gee that was funny. Carey looked like he was trying to shoo a fly away.

As for confusing Norwood and Glenelg... sheesh

Going back to the early-80s here...

A Saturday morning kids footy show, IIRC hosted by David Darcy.

Players from each club would preview the day's game.

And then someone would tip the winner.

There were two of the mascot gnomes sitting on a table. And the tipster would turn the 'losing gnome' around, so its back was to camera.

Ring a bell?

Darryl Hicks...

Still laugh at his half-time call.

Jim West (?) is mouthing off to Greg Phillips. Wayne Mahney flies in from West's blindside and gives him a love-tap on the chin.

Cue Daryl Hicks:

"Wayne Mahney has just disgraced himself in front of national audience".

Ah, the days when the SANFL GF was telecast across the country...

Why are you a Port fan??

I got the idea for this thread from the Geelong board.
So why do you barrack for "AFL Port". Were you a "SANFL Port" supporter or did you jump on the bandwagon around the 2004 Premiership or something else.

I've gone for "AFL Port" since day dot in 1997. I was only 6 years old, was really starting to get interested in football and Port were the new thing. Also one of my mates started being a Port fan as well, so he encouraged me.
