Carlton, Essendon and a few others are legitimate top 4 chances, what's the problem acknowledging it? Are you scared of the disappointment that comes with high expectations? Or do you genuinely think you aren't top 4 worthy?

I guess he didn’t see it as a completely straight move by the club with it being the last year of his own contract. Which is probably correct.

TBH I think it has more to do with a pre-existing relationship. Ratten started of with Mark Riley, who was his senior coach while an assistant at the Dees; and he has a good relationship with Riley. Problem is, Riley has nowhere near the record that Bomber brings to Essendon.

Now if that "senior assistant" had have been David Parkin, Ratts would have jumped at it I reckon, however Parko is likely beyond such a role these days. If Craig Bradley had have been coaching and had a record like Bomber's, I reckon Ratten would have jumped at the suggestion. I assume that the person the club were vetting just didn't have a pre-existing relationship with Ratten and was therefore perceived by him as being as much a potential threat as a potential team player.

Carlton recruited Richardson and Gavin Brown 2009/2010 who were both more qualified to be senior coaches than either Ratten or Hird when they started as senior coaches. Add Riley and Willliams and Carlton would have one of the best Coaching panels. The mistake was originally to appoint Harvey and Lappin who were unimpressive (and now at Collingwood).

What a load of rubbish. Silvagni was simply an excellent footballer. To give an indication of his talent, he would outpoint Carey at CHF time and again; no grappling, just a great reader of the play with an instinctive spoil, terrific mark and amazingly strong through the legs. He would have been an out-and-out champion in any era.

I like Fletcher and reckon he is chronically underrated on BF; but no! Just no! Doull is pound for pound probably the best defender I've seen play footy. To give you some indication - he's arguably comparable to James Hird in quality of footballer. Really! That's how good he was. Ask Irwin if you don't believe me.

I think Essendon will finish somewhere from 6th to 8th and play finals, but with all due respect there are a few better teams out there at the moment. Win this years's flag, I don't think so.

Unfortunately for bomber fans, their club won't have any meaningful success in the next 10 years. The playing list lacks quality across the park and the fact that inspector Gadget is still getting a game and being crucial to their hopes shows they have a lack of depth.

History has shown that to win a flag, you need to have a quality midfield and this is an area in particular where Essendon struggles. Their up and comers in Melksham, the injury clouds surrounding Kavanagh , Howlett and Zaharakis are simply not going to be of the quality to pose a legitimate threat to any contenders.

LOL. Not sure if a troll or the usual biased crap magpie supporters throw out. Whilst i agree our midfield probably needs another A grader, so far this year we are among the best in all areas related to the midfield.

Lack of depth? We are probably equal with West Coast in being the most injury depleted side this year. Yet the guys who come in simply get the job done, unlike some guys down at Collingwood.

Whilst I don't think we are a premiership contender just yet since we haven't exactly won against anyone of premiership quality (excluding Carlton, however even they performed well below standard on the day) I think it's hard to say we aren't in a good position going forward.

Certainly has the ingredients and as one of the upcoming teams, is currently miles ahead of 9th-mond and tankers. But they better do it b4 fletcher retire cos once he goes, it will take a couple of seasons to overcome his loss. But game plan wise certainly will be very competitive but wont have the class to reach the very top.

Look the side to beat at this stage of the season. Very open competition but we're a third of the way in, and they look as good as anyone. Adelaide and West Coast look great at home but they can't beat good sides in Melbourne.
