Will Essendon win the Flag ?

could see it happen at this stage... Essendon v Adelaide GF

Wait the Tigers had a very convincing win yesterday ...so we need to fit them into out premature ejaculation thread ...so as of today we have an essendon adelaide and tigers grand final . ;)

of course this could and will change after next weeks results .

The eagles were ripe for the plucking yesterda, and they would have lost to a number of teams ...including richmond....and probably the Dogs .

imho there are 2 key indicators that really show who are the teams most likely to win a flag

1. the team can beat a tough interstate team in their own backyard
2. in the previous year, they knock off the eventual premiers

last year, essendon beat the eventual premiers for the first time in a long long time (2000 i think was the last time). now waiting to see whether they can knock off the eagles/crows/dockers/swans on their own turf. if they can start winning those games then look out!

Would have been difficult for Essendon to knock off the eventual premiers in 2000... as Essendon were the premiers in 2000. We did beat the Roos in 99 though, which I think is what you were going for.

Yes the Eagles were ripe for the plucking but it is the manner in which they lost.

It was a 10 goal victory vs a side that hadn't lost a game to that point.

I will not consider us top 4 material until we can beat an interstate side at a similar level to us away from home.

We've got Freo and Adelaide away this season who fit that bill - if we beat one of them, then perhaps I might change my opinion.

It's remarkable how lucky Essendon are, as every time we beat a side they happen to have an off day

Is this serious?

We haven't beaten a side legitimately since the year 2000. Every win since then it hasn't been about anything we've done ourselves, it's all about what our opposition didn't do.

"Oh we had injuries" , "Oh we were 5% off" , "Oh the umpiring handed Essendon the game" , "Oh the advertising signs were too bright" , "Oh the wind changed direction during the second quarter and gifted Essendon the win"

It gets more hilarious with every victory.

On current form, is any team/s clearly ahead of the pack? I would say no. But as with most prediction threads, you just cannot predict anything until the finals. Look at last year for example. Collingwood in the first half of the season were the dominant team and deserved flag favourite. Fast forward 2 months and they fell back slightly and Geelong joined them/just went ahead.
An example from 2010. Fremantle were 6-1 and being talked about as contenders. They ended up the H & A season 13-9.
I think Collingwood are flying under the radar as are the Blues. In fact I think it was a good loss for them, by Essendon in round 4. Up til that point everybody was talking about them as flag favourites, but since then they have also been flying under the radar.

our last 7 games of the year are a hell of a lot harder then our first 7.

we could quite possibly get to 13-2 coming into round 17 then play Geelong, Hawthorn, Adelaide (away), North, Carlton, Richmond and Collingwood. All 50-50 games so lose them all and finish 13-9. Good improvement from last year and might even pinch a finals win.... Bring on 2013 I say!

Remember the last time (last year) they were doing this good and then it fell apart? Hopefully it doesn't happen again, but you never know.

yes i meant that 1999 was the last time, but applicable for the 2000 season.

what i'm getting at is if a side knocks off the eventual premier the previous season then they'd be reasonably confident in their ability to beat anyone (given the playing list hadn't changed much from the previous year). the theory doesn't always work of course, but it's normally a good indicator of a side on the way up

Last time before 2011 that Essendon beat the eventual premiers was late in 2004, when we beat Port by 40 points at Etihad.

If they had a premiership for overexcited fans jizzing in their pants, overrating their own players and getting ahead of themselves, then Essendon would win the premiership every year.

The Bombers will fall in another heap just like they did last year. It's only a matter of time.

Perhaps they will ride their good fortune all the way to a top four finish, but just as the sun will rise in the east, the Bombers will crash and burn this September.

They're a novelty club, full of gimmicks, smoke and mirrors. Just like their pretend frontman of a coach. A club with a front-running bandwagon fan base who employ an American consultant to manufacture atmosphere amongst fans on game day. They're full of bogus traditions, such as the manufactured rivalry with Collingwood on Anzac Day and the idiotic scarf waving pioneered by Sheedy.

They are jokesters who will be run out of town when the whips are cracking later this year.
