Not hugely surprised by that, if true.
Structurally, it's a bit weird, but, whilst he showed glimpses, he was a passenger on the weekend. Somebody needs to go for Johncock and Thompson, and, besides Tippett (who can't really be replaced by either, being our second ruck), nobody deserves it.
Doesn't mean I'm not disappointed though. Still, Walker will get his chance.

As with Dandy Go, I'm a bit disappointed but not overly surprised.
The truth is Tex didn't do a lot on the weekend. Nice goal and a couple of flashes but not a huge impact. Still I would like to have seen him have a few games in a row to find his feet a bit better as we all think he has the potential to do something special (and he's in my DT damn it!).
Structurally I find it strange. If Reiwoldt plays I could see us needing to have Stevens back in defence to cover for a player like Kosi (I'm not sure Otten could go with him in the air).
Perhaps we will play Gill? (Seems even stranger given the bye on the weekend) or maybe Griffin to come in with Tippet as permanent forward?

Isn't it great to have all of these options??:D

I would be suprised to be honest.

You can call him a passenger but lets be honest the guy was playing forward and I think had the 2nd least amount of TOG.

It is always more difficult as a forward that a mid/def to get touches and I would have thought he would get a 2nd game to see how he goes

Upset, as St. Kilda have a questionable back line and it would have been a good oportunity.

Shame indeed.....if true, but Tails is hardly off the money.

Disappointing that 2, if not 3, newbies seem likely to get the chop after playing their roles in a morale-boosting win (even Walker did some nice things, though not many of them).

I was hoping for only 1 newbie to go among 2 omissions.

So where are they heading with this?

- Griffin in, Tippett forward, Walker out?

- Straight swap with Gill?

-Moran in and the 3 rucks to rotate forward/ruck/bench with Tippett predominantly forward. Moran in as insurance against Kosi etc down back (not that I'd like to pay high premiums for that insurance down back:o)

- One less tall who didn't contribute a lot overall for another running player to stretch the Saints with run and pace (ie Thompson)?

- As above but perhaps specifically creating room for Shirley to come in a play a negating role.

As mentioned by others, my concern is that if Stevens/Hentschel is needed back and we bring a running player in that only leaves a forward line of Stevens/Hentschel + Tippett/Maric...i know we really dont want to be top heavy in this day and age, especially in a night game at dewy AAMI, but i think 1 more option would add the depth required...what if one tall gets injured on the day?

I wouldn't drop Walker for this week but if someone told me he had to go, I'd bring in Gill for his spot (along with Johncok and Thompson for others of course)

I'd be surprised if they'd bring Griff in on the back of 1 game. It took several rounds for Maric to break into the side after his shitty NAB cup last season, and he was DOMINATING the SANFL.

I think we'll make two changes; Walker and Cook for Thompson and Johncock.

Stevens will play a full game up forward, Maric and Tippett will rotate ruck/forwardline, and Hentschel will be our third tall target. Andy Otten will be given further responsibility in the backlines, as will Dangerfield.
I don't see us making more than 2 unforced changes off the back of a good win.

Ridiculous if this is true. He didn't do a whole lot wrong and looked pretty composed when he had the footy. Doesn't look out of his depth and i get the impression he just needs one game where he kicks a bag to kick start his AFL career. The Saints back line is average compared to many, so I'd be keeping him in as it could be this week.

In my opinion, Cook and Dangerfield should miss from the weekend for Stiffy and Thommo. Cook and Danger played well, although I would guess both may have missed if both Stiffy and Thommo were fit for round 1.

Cook and Danger will also benefit from an additional run with their SANFL clubs.

I would be disappointed if Taylor was dropped. I agree with others that is input was the least out of that young group of five players, but I would like to see him at least play a few games in a row.

Didn't Tippett play a handful before he was dropped last year or injured? He hardly set the world on fire when he first stepped onto the scene during the season.

I really don't see how you could drop Walker for Johncock and Thompson given the height the Saints have got up forward. Surely Gill hasn't done enough to replace Walker, he didn't even play a game last week and its not as if Walker was that bad. If true it would have to be Griffin in and Tippett up forward which then means making three changes.

I don't know, I beleive it when I see it.

Disappointing. Would make sense though I guess. Hentschel to spend more time forward rather than the sweeping role he ended up in last week. No need to go too tall in a night game.

The expected crowd figure has just dropped 20% though.

That's true, but Tippett benefits from his versatility. At the time, Maric was seen to be in bad form and was given an extended run in the SANFL after a poor NAB cup, and Moran was injured. We were short on ruck options. We were also short on forward options, with Hentschel and Gill injured; and Walker and Sellar not ready.

Tex made very good leads up forward and wasn't honoured many imes or was hit will an ill directed kick.

CRAP

I wish Tails wasn't well informed, he adds another dynamic up forward.

It's a night game at AAMI, and showers are forecast for the day. The ball will likely be very slippery. We wouldn't want to go in too tall.

Yeah good point, didn't think of that.

I just expected him to be in the side until he got injured or something. I'd love to watch him further his development in the side rather the SANFL, I think he's ready.

Don't underestimate the young fella's ability on the deck.

IIRC, he topped the goal assists category at the '07 U/18s champs, as well as a few good performances for Norwood below his knees.

I think it would be a cop out for the Crows coaching staff to blame the weather for dropping him, and as CG said, at this stage of his career, it would be more beneficial for his devlopment to play in the AFL, not the SANFL.

Plus, think of my DT...:p

Seems silly to drop him.

I have vested interest - dreamteam/supercoach :D

But I was also at the game and watched him closely.

I cannot think of him making a single error?

As someone else stated, lead well all day, created a lot of space.

He was ignored or copped misdirected kicks at all times after the first quarter.

The potential was there that he could have had another 3-4 scoring shots if your boys only kicked acurately towards him.

I think play him for the next 3 games and if he doesn't increase his output, drop him..

...Then I can trade him out of DT :)

Below the knees skills are still quite good. Stevens would have the worst below knees skills after Maric (not going anywhere) But he killed Saturday.

Tex, Chook and Tipp are all > average below knees for their height.

I think you'll find with Andy Otten playing the 3rd tall role so well on the weekend that we felt we were 1 tall too many and as a result Tippet had to play basically as a 2nd ruck with the odd cameo up forward, as Hentschel, Stevens and Walker were already up there.

The triplet of Hentschel, Stevens and Walker also don't really offer a lot of diversity in the way they play, neither are genuine power forwards, they are the clever type who try to out think/out maneuver their opponents. Not to mention we also have Porplyzia/Edwards spending a fair chunk of time up forward, with similar attributes.

If this info is correct then I think we'll see Tippet spend a lot more time up forward. Also remember the trouble Tippet gave the Saints last time they came up against him, almost won us the match.

Pretty dissapointed about this, but can see why we would do it, guess it could be Cook and Walker for Stiffy and Thommo.
