Lot of very hard hit drives these days, I remember reading majority of cricket fatalities are umpires not players, they are older and react slower so this is to protect his head.
It's a home-made arm-guard. I believe it's designed to protect his face if need be.
The English fans are all at the Australian matches to boo Smith and Warner.

You're right, and the results have been pretty even in terms of batting first and batting second this tourney (slightly in favour of batting first).
It seems it's more an issue of captains being seduced by early starts or the look of the weather though (and... it's in England), as they've sent the opposition in 14 times and have won 6 of them. NZ have 3 of those wins against lesser teams (SL, Bangladesh and Afghanistan) and another was SA beating Afghanistan. It feels like there have been way too many instances of opting to field, surrendering a 300+ score and failing to chase it

Why did Kohli walk? India will come up about 30 runs short of what they should have got. Pakistan bat well and put in a concentrated effort, a 300 plus score they can get.
