They only way we were gonna win was 0-0 in a penalty shootout, it's amazing we made the World Cup but we still struggle to score goals from free flowing play. Last World cup all our goals came from the penalty spot.

I think we need to play exciting young attackers with serious pace like Folami & Volpato at the WC fed by Rogic. Go with a front 3 and stick Mclaren in the middle between them.
Bold move to play Rogic in a midfield 3 due to his lack of defensive work but we have to be bold. None of this 4-5-1 nonsense / playing for a draw / score on the break. We have some quality - actually use it. I feel Arnie will just be focused on not conceding / playing for draws and it will get us nowhere.

Depends..... England in our group would of been epic.
2006 Australia had Japan, Croatia and Brazil In that group.
Brazil had Ronaldo, Kaka and Ronaldinho in that 2006 squad.

May have a chance at qualifying if that was their group lol
Arnold coached brilliantly, had the team set up well and really motivated. The few times Peru threatened we slowed the game down, then kept possession for a few minutes to break the momentum. They couldn’t get into a rhythm so they mostly sat back, played into our hands. South American sides mostly like playing narrow and short, sharp 1-2’s in front of the penalty box so whenever Peru threatened this way we packed the centre of defence. They got nowhere.
We at least went out to win, Peru just expected us to roll over. They were simply weak and pathetic in the end. We were smart, playing to our physical and mental strengths, basically within our capabilities. This is what won it for us in the end. Being in Doha for 2 weeks was just massive for us, the region has become our home away from home.
The Redmayne antics will go down in folklore. The masters of the ‘dark arts‘ are the South Americans, he outwitted them. We’re normally the ones on the receiving end. How humiliating must it be for them being knocked out by a Wiggle especially after their president called a national holiday for the game.
Now for the WC, Arnold should just let them go out play with the good old Aussie spirit like they did today rather than get bogged down with tactics and over analysis. Got some tickets for a few games at the WC in the FIFA ballot including the Denmark group game and also for the R16 1Cv2D knockout game, (Could end up seeing Argentina v Australia lol).

Going into the game I thought this was as far as Australia would get. So to make the world cup is an outstanding achievement for this group of players.
As for the game itself, I reckon Peru didn't perform as well as they should have, but I was happy with the performance from our boys. We matched them, and even marginally looked the better side. I'd imagine Peru would be looking back at the chances they had (eg the header that hit the post) as the one that got away.
As for the shootout, and the keeper sub, I was thinking wtf is Arnold doing? But the grey wiggle, the throwing away of the oppo keepers water bottle, and for it to work! Pure shithousary to get into the world cup. Hilariously fantastic!

That 1997 Aussie squad wasn't bad. Harry Kewell was a kid and playing for Leeds. Guys like Robbie Slater did play in England. Ironic as Graham Arnold played in that infamous 1997 2 legged play off vs Iran.
Speaking of Iran, some of their starting 11 were playing in the German league.
2001 squad was good too. Uruguay had some good players playing their trade in Spanish la liga and Italy Serie A. Got that 1-0 lead from a goal by Kevin Muscat of all people. Gutted we lost 3-0. Nearly got a goal when we were 1-0 or 2-0 down. Could of made it by away goals
That 2005 Aussie side had Kewell, Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill in their peak years. But the difference was the 2nd leg was in Australia and the home crowd rallying the Socceroos home edged us over the line.
Our 2010 squad was practically similar to 2006 minus our strikers of Mark Viduka and John Aloisi. But playing in Asia improved the Socceroos. Facing teams like Korea, Japan and some middle eastern teams made the Socceroos a better side. People bag out pim verbeeks coaching tenure. But yeah he was defensive but we finished top of the group and automatically qualified rather than get 3rd and a playoff.

It's a poor Aussie team but Peru didn't appear to be Vidal/Sanchez Chile type of side. Beatable with some luck.

I rate the 1997 team as just about the best we’ve ever had.
Harry Kewell was 19 years old, pre injuries, hadn’t even hit his peak, and scored 2 goals in a 2 leg qualifier.
We had Bosnich (pre injuries, weight gain and cocaine addiction) in goals. People forget how good was Bosnich was. He was just about the best keeper in the world around then.
Ned Zelic playing for Italy and Paul Okon before injuries.
Alex Tobin and Milan Ivanovic, Tony Vidmar, Craig Moore as defensive options.
Stan Lazaridis absolutely tore up that second leg against Iran.
Aloisi and Viduka as youngsters, Aurelio Vidmar should have kicked about 6 against Iran at the MCG.
Man, that result against Iran was an absolute tragedy, not just because of the defeat, the 295950 chances we wasted, that piece of human excrement Peter Hore interrupting, and that we were the better team by lightyears.
That team was something special.
What the class of 2006 achieved was magnificent, but the 1997 Socceroos were the best group of players we’ve ever had.
If I remember the venables coached team was undefeated even then, Iran winning on away goals.
MCG night was sensational the crowd really urging them on. Trouble is they should have parked the bus. Lots of us realised that before Iran equalised. Then they showed how to park the bus

97 was a heartbreaker, that squad was very bloody good and if I remember correctly, Iran ended up in a pretty easy group as well.
