Shaw for me.
well said. This thread and the discussion is very unfair.
The awarding of the Norm Smith medal is based on the opinions of an independent panel of football experts.
If anybody disagrees with a player being awarded the medal, criticism should be directed at that panel of experts.
There is no such thing as a "worst player" as getting to a grand final is already a major achievement... it is far better to express in terms of "which player should not have been awarded a Norm Smith medal".

Is that right? I wasn't aware of that. Wouldn't that be deemed as draft tampering?Well said mate,i agree , his 28 and played 260 games, i believe he is up there as an elite player. At the time he wasnt, but he was an up and comer. Still the only player in history to have a sign on fee for the draft.

If these guys are the worst to win, then where were the champs ? The Norm Smith is decided on the day and lets not forget it,s a team game. Good on these guys who are usually team players.I thought Buckley was deserved.
Wayne Harmes was well lucky. Wasn't there a story about McConville or Kourkamelias getting a TV as prize for best player one week when he'd had only a couple of kicks?
Billy Duckworth was a bit of a scrubber and Shaun Hart was an avergae player.
Whilst Embley isn't elite he does have an ability to turn it on and win games.
Shame on you and you being a Hawthorn supporter. Colin Robertson can hold his head high and is not out of place with the " top players". I,d have in my side anytime. And still the massive over-rating continues...
Judd is well behind a number of those footballers, right now, and will finish his career behind a good few of them too.
IMO, Robertson is the weakest footballer to have won one, with Duckworth & Dear close behind.
Williams & Ablett can slug it out for the best, with Madden, Hird & Buckley hot on their heels.
Thats right, Buckley was good in 2002 but the real Champion wearing number 3 stood up when it really mattered!!Nathan Buckley![]()

No it was totally legal, 60,000 on his head, that year the swans had the first two picks ( or 2 and 3 i cant really remember) And Shagger was hoping to stay in Melb, But the swans still picked him after choosing A rocca with there first chose. So normal sign up of two years and he was off. Then we all know what happened from there.
I backed S.Grant in `99 so worst player or not, i owe that boy one or two beers......won me plenty.
Interesting. But I assume such practices have been outlawed these days? Otherwise it would be no different to established players putting prices on their heads in the hope of deterring certain clubs from picking them up in the draft. And to my knowledge that is not allowed. No it was totally legal, 60,000 on his head, that year the swans had the first two picks ( or 2 and 3 i cant really remember) And Shagger was hoping to stay in Melb, But the swans still picked him after choosing A rocca with there first chose. Eh??The actual least deserving (even though he was a great player) was obviosusly Wayne Harmes. The dominator was totally robbed in '79. Harmes would have been lucky to have been in the top 4 on the ground.

This is because, jusging by your profile, you were probably only two years old in 1999 and had to go naptimes in the afternoon.
That's sorta my point. I believe the AFL has disallowed players from putting prices on their heads as it's deemed to be draft tampering and would give clubs with more money a better chance to draft such players. If it was legal then it would be similar to a free agency system where a player names his price in the open market and he basically goes to the highest bidder. This is the exact opposite of how the AFL draft system currently works.Thats an interesting question, im not sure mate to be honest, most clubs have plenty of money these days so i think its alot different than it was bad in the good old days.

One thing about that list... what a fantastic group of footballers, and that this thread is incredibly disrespectful.

Yeah watch out when having a few beers with Shagga ( windy hill ), he doesn't mind the odd lemonade or two, i wouldnt worry about the elbows of shagga himself, its his brother id be watching for...
