Opinion Young equal or not equal Jones?

Young was always going to be a good signing. He is/was an introvert who was very much stifled by the Beveridge coaching style. My only concern was his one on one defensive work. It needed developing.

Turns out the greatest thing for him was some personal development off-field to force him to come out of his shell a bit. Our young group is an ideal environment to build self worth. OMac was absolutely on target to be our go to partner for Weiters early in the season. Youngy got his chance and grew from an ordinary, but promising first outing to find a place beside Jacob. The transformation became complete when the introvert, living a lifetime in the shade became “the man” through necessity. The boy became a man in the twinkling of an eye.

So many people in this world just need opportunity to shine and a little faith externally and internally. Congrats Lewis on taking that step. You belong and there is no turning back now.

Jonesy was flawed. Athletically superior, able to offset his mental lapses through skill and will. Jones drove me nuts, always appreciative of his kamikaze saves, but bloody frustrated his poor positioning or concentration made them necessary.

Young stays at his task structurally and is second to none at applying a well timed fist from a difficult position. He is not a “thumper” like Jones, but all that is needed is a disruptive fist. He is at an exceptionally high level already. Disposal is solid, but kicking can be a little ”loopy” with a little too much elevation. I am sure that will improve over time.

I would take Young over Jones now and beyond. He is a better structured player and allows his team mates confidence in his positioning. Those around him don’t need to second guess what is next. While we are still a work in progress, we are not seeing the same level of players isolated in the last line, trying to mop up while their mates are hunting, or watching the ball upfield.

Jones was pretty good down there. If both he and Young were at the club then I wonder if Young would have had the same opportunities. Young has grown beyond expectation and will be a great defender for us for more years than Jones could be now.

I really hope Marchbank can right his body and take Plowman’s spot.

Nonsensical premise.

Asking if players are equal is ridiculous as no one is the equal to anyone else. All have different strengths, weaknesses and styles of play.

The answer is obviously no.

The more appropriate question is: Can Young play the role we require?

Yes. Young has shown great growth so far and held down the post admirably while Weitering was injured.

I think people forget just how good Jones could be, brain fades notwithstanding.

That said given age differential and how Young is developing, it's an easy answer.

Jones made the decision to retire.
If he had stayed, we would now be looking for a replacement due to his age. Due to astute recruiting we found a ready made 23 year old 201cm replacement thanks to a Dogs' moment of madness, and Young will only improve.
Now the Dogs are even looking at Jones!
McGovern will provide the intercept and pin point Jones-like kicking, hopefully without the brain fades, out of the backline.

It's fairly close. Personal opinion is Young, but they both had slightly different strengths.
Young better at spoiling (not by much) and better disposal, especially by foot.
Jones better one on one and better intercepting, but played off his man more, which also hurt us at times.
Done a comparison between Lewis this year and Jones last year.
Despite Jones having more inside 50s (he played up the ground more than Lewis does) and more metres gained, Young has more score involvements. So he's not getting as many touches higher up the ground, but the ones he's getting are obviously being used to advantage better by the receiving players (more of Young's back half disposals are going on to lead to scores).

Different types of defenders, but not equal. Not yet anyway. I reckon a few in here are understating just how good Jones actually was.

Having said that, Young is only 23 and hasn't yet played 40 games of senior footy. He's learning and growing with each outing, and there's every chance he overtakes Jones in the not too distant future. Regardless I am confident he'll be a good footballer for us for years. Has been an invaluable addition to the squad.

Great stats...

The only thing missing is how rubbish we were and the amount of work our defenders had to do ALL the time...

If you walked into a grand final this year need to defend against big forwards, you would take Jones 8 days a week. Young is great and will be awesome going forward, but would love to have had Jones this year and for the next few

Jones was prone for brain snaps but an unbelievable intercept mark
Young will be as good if not better soon enough
Great pick up for us
What a spine we will have next year
Weitering
Young
Cripps
Curnow
McKay

Top that 💪

this goes to remind me how much we really have endured as a club to get where we are now, our own dreadful stuff ups notwithstanding.......

I don’t what the main reason is (maybe coaches) but our defence has been remarkably stronger this year with way less situations that go well with Benny hill music.

All our defenders from last year are better this year.
Better pressure up the ground in an more help from wings. Would be my guess. Perhaps more defined roles in the backline too.

We still struggle with stopping quick ball movement.

Also have occasional brain fade leaving unmarked oppents i50 when it's mark/free just outside 50. Easy 15m kicks i50 to a target 30m out shouldn't be allowed.

Seems that mindset has changed from attack first to defence first. Saad and Newman in particular. Last year their first instinct was to attack, often leaving their opponent unchecked. This year, their primary responsibility is to defend, and attack when the opportunity presents itself.

Feel much more at ease with the ball in Young's hands, We probably wouldn't have unearthed Young to this extent if Jones was still here also.

Having said that Jones was awesome for us and he helped Weitering develop into the player he is today. Plus we have close to a decade of Young from here.

Are we going to be compensated if Jones joins another AFL team?

We should get a priority pick but afl won’t do it. The whole priority program is like a circus.

There should absolutely be some form of compensation pick if Jones ends up at another club next season.
We never got anything for him this year for circumstances beyond our control.
If AFL change the rules and he can play next year and with another club, compo pick is a must.

Or we get the option to rookie him during the FA/trade period.

Voss on Jones (not going to happen) ...

“There’s obviously been some choices that Liam made. We’re happy to facilitate that choice based on the parameters that were there,” Voss replied.

“I think as a footy club, at some stage, you’ve got to move on.

“As unfortunate as it is, we’d like Liam to still be with us, but that’s not going to be possible, and I think as a footy club we move on.”

Jones, a great defender for us who was prone to the odd bad turnover. He was fantastic to watch in full flight. But he did make me nervous with the odd kick inside the defensive 50. Loved Jonesy’s spoils and marks.
Personally, I think Young has been equal or at least I have as more confidence in him. While different players, Young seems a better one on one defender. Without weitering was fantastic. In Jones defence the team and structure is different this season and he may have gone up another level. Voss have had another AA defender.
Will be hard to watch Jones play for another team if he does play next season. Amazing turnaround career. Best of luck but it won’t be with us.
Why are you so sure it will not be with us. Why can we not have Weitering, Young and Jones in the same backline?
