Wondering about others stories behind their first car (or maybe you never had one, or dont have one yet).

Myself, in the 3 months I spent on my apprenticeship (before I got laid off anyway :o) managed to scrape together $1K to buy a 1997 Nissan Pulsar, pretty nifty car, like driving a go cart. The clutch is absolute shite though, theres barely any left of it (good for me though, driving it is like cheating, can ride the clutch all I like :p). Thought I was doing ok buying myself a car a few weeks after my 16th birthday.

**** knows why I did though, nobody can be arsed taking me out to learn to drive it, its been 2 months and its been taken out less than 5 times :o Just sitting there on the front lawn. Run mums auto around a fair bit though, definately helps learning to drive a manual by driving an auto.

Care to share your stories on your first car?

On my Ls i drive around either an '06 impreza or a '09 impreza. Prefer the latter, '06 hurts my back. Not that im allowed to drive the 2009 one much though :(

I just bought a 1999 holden calais even though im still learning.

When I got my P's, I bought a 1986 Mazda 626 for $300 and then spent about $500 fixing it up.

It's not too bad. It's a manual, has power windows and central locking.

It's still going strong, but I ran over a huge rock on a farm property last year which badly dented the fuel tank. Now I have to guess when I should refuel, which is a pain in the arse. The clutch is getting pretty sticky and it's becoming a chore to drive, so i'm thinking of getting a new car within the next few weeks.

Lol, I drove my mum's car for ages until I bought my first car. :o

I got my first car when I was 26, a silver Hatch Honda Civic, 98. (Altho I went thru ALOT of pain and pure frustration buying the dam thing. Here's a tip- never buy a car when the owner is overseas. It took me over 2 months to get the stupid thing in my name- having receipts etc get "lost in the ****ing mail"- and oh VIN numbers missing one digit.) Anyway I still have it and love it to death. :)

1973 LJ Torana. Stock standard, 4 door sedan, 6cyl, auto trans. Some old pensioner had owned it since new - didn't even have a radio in it. Zippy little thing. For the first couple of months I drove around with a transistor radio for entertainment until someone broke into the car and stole it. I used to lock my keys in it all the time, but it was easy to get in through the front quarter window.

Spent what little cash I had at the time on a stereo and to fix the rust around the windscreen (which was a standard feature of 70's Holdens). Wrote it off nearly 2 years later. I was devastated. I've had 5 cars since and never loved one of them like I did that Torana.

I have the same car same year, but no power windows or central locking. Padi $2,000 for it but was road worthy, nothin wrong with it and didnt spend 1 cent on it. Except for a CD player.

And has barely given me troubles for the past 6 years, except for a little bit of late but othing major!

I was driving home from work once on punt road and this woman hit me from behind and smahed in the back of my car. I got a pay out $2,650 in damages, didnt spend nething on the car as it was only from the lights down were contact was made so all my brake, tail lights and indiciators were still working just a big dint below the number plate!

My first car was a 93 VR commodore that I got about 6 months ago. Only cost me $600 and was registered. Had to buy new tyres and it had a dent in one of the back doors which is now gone and its all good.

A 67 VW beetle that used to be my mums. It possessed a lack of appointments and dynamics that would be hard to believe these days, and many peculiarities like 6 volt lighting, cross ply tyres, swing axle rear suspension and a fuel tank up front in the boot.

I hotted it up eventually, which came in handy when I stupidly used it to visit the Ravenswood drag strip one afternoon. About midnight I started the 50 odd kay trip back to Perth, and knew I was in trouble as soon as I turned on the headlights, which were barely adequate with streetlights and virtually non existent in the pitch dark I now had to contend with. I had a very slow trip to the main road which was then only one lane, doing about 40 kph, and then waited for a car to pass so I could give chase and use their headlights. First one turned off fairly soon, and I nearly ended up in a ditch by the side of the road just trying to pull over and stop. I couldn't see shit!

The next car took me all the way to streetlights thankfully, but for some reason, the driver of the 6 pack Charger, who's luck it was to have me for close company, kept speeding up and up, and not wanting to loose him and end up in another ditch, or wait who knows how long for another car at 1 am, I matched him, until we were hurtling along this narrow, winding, heavily treed country road at 90+ mph.

I lived to tell the tale, but my heart must have been doing 180 bpm, and my knuckles were probably white, if I could have actually seen them. Those lights got a 12v upgrade almost immediately. Much better, and the horn actually worked for the first time after that.

Bloody beetles! Despite that, and a succession of fast cars since, I've still got the little bugger in my garage, all these years later.

My first car was a 1992 EB Falcon.

Guzzled petrol like it was going out of fashion but the engine block was tonka tough. I should've destroyed that engine so many times it wasn't funny. Allegedly with engine block is still in use.

1983 Ford Meteor.

Bought it off my grandma for next to nothing. Because she'd driven it for its whole life and kept it garaged it was in excellent condition. I feel guilty about the way I treated it... Doughies in gravel car parks and car chars were the norm. I finished it by losing control and going head first into a tree. The tree was about a metre in diam. and it split in two. Man I feel guilty about that car, but oh well. Life goes on. :(
