I've found the named best players to be misleading at times.

Didn't get down to this game, but heard a summary on the radio of all the Saints players from a guy who seems reasonably in tune :

Armo - possessions would have been in the high 20s, kicked a good goal in the last quarter, but wasn't always effective with his disposal.

Leigh Fish - Good first half, but didn't re-appear after the break.

Jack - Great goal in the last quarter, but found him a frustrating talent.

Goose - played at both ends. Solid game. He spoke with some people close to Goose and they said "he's going nowhere" (i.e. will stay at the Saints).

Smith - faded but an OK game.

Stanley - very good second half.

Lynch - he thought his last two weeks hadn't been anything special, but that he will be a good AFL player.

Gears - played well.

Miles - ditto.

Begley - not convinced he will make the grade.

Simpkin - lacks size but competes hard.

Howard - lacks intensity.

Gaertner - relief ruck. Good at times. very quick.

Ball - great first quarter and also in the last, but suspects he is carrying something.

Heyne - considered him a project player.

I'll see if I can find some stats during the day.

F - I'd keep McGrath regardless of the progress of Blade (Stanley) and Macca. He is a beanpole even amongst guys who are 6'4, and is a great athlete. Whilst Macca's a classic style footballer and Stanley is freaky quick for 200cm, Ooh Aah could be anything if he can learn the nuances of the game quickly. Should be given plenty of time as long as he keeps showing improvement.

Agreed mate. Why try for another low-pick project player, when you've got one already who seems to have all the attributes and is progressing nicely.
Our youngsters continue to impress. (i think Fish and begley may be in trouble at seasons end!).

Miles - 32 possessions

Armitage - 31

Ball - 30

Steven - 29

Goose - 15 (6 marks)

Also another snippet :

Playing for VFL affiliate Sandringham yesterday, Ball struggled to make an impact at first in a tight 26-point win against ladder leader Williamstown at Beach Oval.

But it was more the normal Ball as Sandy kicked with the wind in the last quarter, with a couple of slick passes by foot and hand playing a key role in the upset win.

I agree.
It's not terrible to have too many rucks.
Look at the trade for Warnock last year, and it won't be better in the future since teams seem to be placing the emphasis on draftee's who are ready to play straight away.
The thing is that even if we had a Watts, Hill, Hartlett, Hurley, or Yarran they would not be getting a game with the Saints at the moment.
If the Saints are prepared to invest in longer term projects ( players ) it can help to keep the team competative a lot longer, rather than the peak and bust we are seeing elsewhere.

Think someone on SS (who'd been to training) said that Woody Allen was looking proppy and might have had a setback with his hip. He is still listed as "indefinite" on the injury list. If so, that would be terrible luck for him as I'm sure he'd of wanted to make some sort of impact with the Zebs before the season was out.

you can only hope for all our sakes than Tungatalum gets a game. Seriously though he seems to kick 2-3 goals and get in the best for reserves most weeks, suprised he hasn't been promoted already.

The thing with Tunga is making sure he builds his body strength to the point where he doesn't become habitually injured. The damage we've seen for both Xavier and Raph, I suspect, are in large part because they were pushed into too hard a type of footy too soon. By the time this was recognised (ie, when GT left), the damage was already done.

great to see little tunga getting a game in the 2nds he has been in really good form with the sandy reserves so i hope he plays really well and fires:thumbsu:

Anyone got updates? Bally especially and apparntly goose has done a hammy :(
not great news from a Saints point of view. Ball had some sort of chest injury.
Maquire I think did his hammy slightly and came off for precaution, Miles his ankle and Lynch an AC joint, Miles and Lynch will get checked tomorrow to see how bad. Lynch did come back on after an injection but Sandy played out last quarter with virtually no interchange bench so Bendigo got closer than they should have. Good news was Heyne kicked 5 but not much else from St Kilda point of view

copy paste from saintsational
VFL Round 16:

Sandy 14.15-99 beat Bendigo 12.8-80

Goals: Heyne 5, Sautner 4, Armitage 2, Smith 2, Lynch
Best: Geary, Summers, Smith, Gallagher, Simpkin, W Johnson

Others: Ball, Begley, Gaertner, Howard, Maguire, Miles, Stanley, Steven, Tungatalum

VFL Reserves Round 16:

Sandy 25.15-165 beat Bendigo 6.3-39

Goals: Muller 6, Connors 3, Ferraro 3, Cleeve 2, B Eddy 2, Gilchrist 2, Hardiman 2, Haretuku 2, M Johnston, McConnell, Waller
Best: Liddell, Muller, Gilchrist, Connors, Cleeve, Gribbin

I assume Smith is Alistair Smith, one of our last picks from last years draft? If so great news, we've had a heap of different players show something in the VFL this year. Disappointing Choo Choo didn't snag one though, hopefully he doesn't get dropped.

btw as someone on ss pointed out, the bests seem to be getting dodgier by the week. last week Lynch was BOG without kicking a goal, this week Heyne bags 5 but can't get a mention?

According to Saintsational reports, Tungatalum played for the firsts :)thumbsu:), Stanley was BOG (not even mentioned in the official report ) and Ball (chest), Maguire (hamstring), Miles (ankle) and Lynch (shoulder) copped injuries. That may explain the far from impressive result against woeful Bendigo.

Would like to see Armo get a go in the last couple of rounds of the season. He's a good in and under player and tackler which you can never have too many of and seems to be a goal kicker. His kicking couldn't be any worse than Eddy's.

The love affair continues, Bourkey :D

Great to see Heyne in amongst it :thumbsu:
Nice to see Geary given BOG :thumbsu:
Stanley seems to consistently be given a higher rating by the Saintsational crew than the (??dodgy journos) who give the ratings in the paper. I hope that there is some justification to their calls.

We may be experiencing another rare situation for our club...

...having a wealth of great ruckmen :thumbsu:

Haha, Heyney will always have my love:thumbsu:

Regarding Stanley, he's been a ripper over the last month. Has come on in leaps and bounds. Was very, very impressive against Willy (which i attended). Great size, covers the ground, wins plenty of hitouts and is very quick for a boy of his build. Lovely, lovely bloke as well. He'll play plenty of games for the St.Kilda footy club i'm thinking:thumbsu:

I wondered how long it would take Bourky to find his way onto this thread after seeing the goalkickers :D

Clearly Heyne's got ability, so here's hoping he puts in a big pre-season.

Glad Eljay is starting to put some form together - always like to keep the really pacy types on the list in case the penny drops for them.

Simpkin continues to impress. I think we've snagged a ripper here, as he is punching way above his weight, but looks to have the sort of frame that will fill out in time.

Comments :

- Maguire, Miles, Smith all out (didn't hear about Smith' injury)
- instant reward for Connors' BOG for the reserves last week
- McGrath named for the firsts again
- Tungatalum relegated from the firsts to the reserves' bench (what has he done ?)

From the one game I saw, I was really impressed by Gaertner and Stanley. Awesome signs for the future.

Gaertner was always gonna be a gun with his freakish athletic abilities, good marking and read of the play...

Just his kicking lets him down.

Which is kind of important.

Heres hoping we can get another Beda boy ripping it up!

Or McGarry. Not too fussed.

Oh and, draft Patty Liston.
