Round 1 Side

Based on who will be fit by round 1 and who's selected to play Vfl practice match.

FB: Geary, Delaney, Dempster
HB: Savage, Fisher, Newnes
C: Steven, Dunstan, Templeton
R: Hickey, Weller, Armitage
HF: Membrey, Riewoldt, Lonie
FF: Saad, McCartin, Bruce
I: Longer, Shenton, Acres, Schneider

Emg: Sinclair, Roberton, Curren, Minchington

Inj: Gilbert, Siposs, Webster, Ray, Ross, Markworth, Murdoch, Montagna, Billings, Wright

Developing in VFL
McKenzie, White, Pierce, Simpkin, Holmes, Payne, Lee, Saunders, Goddard

Very keen to see how the mystery man McKenzie goes in the VFL on Sunday. No chance for Round 1 I would think but it would be good if he could show enough that an early season debut is on the cards given Ray, Ross, Gilbert, Wright, Webster, Markworth and Murdoch won't be available for some time. Ugh, it hurt writing that list.

We looked terribly undersized in our defensive line against the Hawks.
With Brucey moving forward, I think Goddard needs to come in. Let's face it, against a lot of sides that's where a great deal of the game is going to be played. No point having a flashy forward setup if they're not seeing ball.

20th time lucky:

FB: Dempster Delaney Geary
HB: Acres Fisher Savage
C: Eli Dunstan Newnes
HF: Membrey Roo Lonie
FF: Saad Bruce McCartin/White

R: Hickey Steven Armo

Int: Weller Sinclair Minchington Curren

Roo basically a winger. I refuse to have three of Membrey, McCartin, Lee and White all playing VFL.

Acres is no good down back IMO, and I'm not sure Savage will be right for Round 1 will he? That being said, neither Sav nor Billings are on TE latest injury list...

We're a bit shaky at half back, with neither Roberton or Shenton entirely impressing during the NAB, but I'm plumping for Dyl ahead of Cam as his disposal is better.

I also think Saad and Sinclair will be upgraded; so 120th time lucky...

Acres is a two game player so doesn't need to be a star yet, development is more important and HB is good for young guys. In saying that though I'm not too fussed where he plays as long as he plays, swap Newnes and Acres if you must.

Paddy is an interesting one. I'd personally start him in the VFL but if Roo plays Paddy won't be getting the best defenders like he has had to deal with in the NAB and could play with a bit more freedom

Would still consider playing Spence ahead of Paddy.

I agree it's a tough one, but given it's against GWS they might choose to get the debut out of the way early on at home.

Frustrating that lee nor white did nothing in the pre season

I say play paddy. He did very well as our sole key forward against merrett lake Gibson.

Back him in, I also think there is room for Spencer but that would be moving roo to a half forward flank and letting him roam around the ground

We won't play White, McCartin, Bruce, Riewoldt and Membrey. Last three I say will play with the first two fighting for one spot with Lee.

I can't see why you couldn't. Riewoldt can play around the ground more So I believe we let him roam. I agree we most likely won't but I definitely feel like the richo option is available to us

A lot to like about this team. I think Shenton still ahead of Roberton, and Geary will play a little higher up the ground. Love Hickey starting forward, and Holmes would be pushing hard for Longer's ruck specialist spot. McCartin could also make a case for Membreys medium tall role as well. Lonie not quite there yet physically.

I'm sure I read an article that billings wont be ready round one.

I think Gears has to play midfield and would love to see Big Spencer get a game iF fit .

Shenton Delaney Goddard
Dempster Fisher Savage*
Newnes Armitage Geary
Billings* Bruce Saad
White Riewoldt Templeton
Hickey
Steven Weller
Dunstan Acres Lonie ( Schneider )
Emerg Curran Saunders

I think richo likes playing youngsters in the backline for durations of games so they actually get a defensive mindset into there own game. Similar to Newnes, where he started off there but now pushes in the midfield. Makes them a better footballer. Young kids need to learn to run both ways.
Also kicking under pressure. Once they get the confidence to kick back there they can hit targets anywhere.
