We keep having long stretches of the game where we get smashed in the clearances. I think it's clear that our 2 main extractors, Mills and Parker are struggling. Whilst we wait for Roberts, Sheldrick and possibly Cleary to come of age, should we not consider Matt Crouch? Didn't see the game obviously but anyone who can get 32 disposals (15 contested) at 91% efficiency against the number 2 side in the competition in a big match deserves some consideration. Only 28, could get at least 2-3 good years out of him, by which time, our youngsters are hopefully hitting their peak. He is also out of contract and favour and will come cheap.

Papley is playing the Matt Crouch role already that is why he gets put in the center when we are struggling to get a clearance and it often pays off.

Reads the taps well.

Its a obvious hole we need to fix.

I agree with the sentiment but Parker has been one of our best this season. He's carrying our midfield unit (along with Gulden) but i agree, we need someone like Crouch.

While his kicking is poor I think the rest of our midfield can make up for his deficiencies. Like Collingwood has with Mitchell

Don't mind the idea of a crouch pick up

Wait, we're relying on OUR midfield to cover a poor kick?

When people complain about midfielders being crabs it's like complaining that Barrass is a poor matchup on Charlie Cameron. Yeah, no s**t I don't want Barrass to play on Cameron. I need him on the monster forwards.

Feel icky saying this as a longtime (well since 2021) believer of what our midfield can do... I think we need a gun mid. Really not liking how our midfield is tracking and it's going in the wrong direction. I am so much less confident in that group now than I was six months ago. It's going nowhere. Just my thoughts, not saying I'm right.

I dunno, we're obviously more of a turn over team that values running power. 52 to 18 hit outs last night means we're OK with giving it up a bit in there to get the advantage elsewhere. We're comprised from the get go in the middle.

Maybe TT if he passes the character test.

Not paying up for an accumulator with Sheldrick and Roberts about to step up

Ladhams might help but not a lot

Without knowing our salary cap situation, I’d like to bring in a gun mid buy also think that defence and even ruck are higher priorities.

Given the cost of bringing in a gun mid, particular as none seem to be open on the market at the moment, the necessary approach may be giving the midfield time.

He’s my take on our mids:

Mills - good all rounder. Above average at most things, elite at tackling. However, too slow to be considered an elite all rounder.

Parker - good bull that can go forward. Elite physicality (if slightly to the small side for a bull). But too slow and poor user to be an elite bull. Very strong as resting forward.

Rowbottom - good defensive mid. Elite tackler, but doesn’t get enough of the ball consistently enough and is a poor user.

Gulden - Elite ball user but better on the wing. Too small to dominant, at least in pairings with above players.

Campbell - still bringing to all together in the backline. Potential to be a star mid with his pace, kicking skills and appetite to get physical.

Sheldrick - future gun ball winner. Small, but solid as a tank, knows how to win the ball and hard to tackle.

If we bring in a gun, I think it is Rowbottom who makes way, with Mills being the defensively minded mid. The other option is that Mills stays and Parker is moved forward.

If we wait for our list to develop, I reckon Sheldrick starts to becomes a fixture from next year, with Campbell another year away. This could free up Parker to spend more time forward and Mills to become a utility across the ground.

The other option is to bring in Grundy to play ruck/mid, but I’m not sure this matches the skilled ball use game plan we are trying to develop. I’d be shifting Parker forward, both to prevent two mids hack hacking and for his forward marking skills.

Its a difficult one would you say Brisbane has become a LOT better after getting Dunkley?

I think Dunkley has had a fine season but overall have they been a better team?

no idea about his contract status but nick holman at the suns is a player who has steadily improved every year, and wouldn't come with the price of some higher-profile teammates, he's got a touch of class and i like how he goes about it
i'd rather chase someone like holman than anyone named crouch or an overrated pedestrian such as parish (who seems to be headed for geelong, and they're welcome to him)

If we continue building form, it's probably pick 10 at the earliest. There'll be 2-3 spots pushed back from wherever we end up (I still think we finish about 10th).
Even though our form of the past three weeks has been better, I still expect only one win from our last 4 games - Gold Coast. If that's the case we will finish either 12th or 13th giving us a pick of 6-7 prior to pre draft selections. That will therefore become 9-10. I'm happy to give that up for Barass but nothing more than that. If WC also want our Hawthorn pick, I'd be saying "you can keep Barass, thank you".
Having since hearing about his back issues, I'm not confident about trading for him at all. Particularly for what the cost will be.

I don't really think Brisbane's issue was their midfield though. I always felt their issue was their game plan and execution of skills not being up to par when tested and challenged.

With regards to us I feel like when fit we are so close to the complete picture, but there's just this one giant midfield issue that will constantly hold us back from being THE best.

I don't know if Mills will ever be a full-time mid enough to be the inside distributor we need. I feel like Horse sees him as a Mr. Fix It (which is understandable, he's good everywhere he plays.) Warner & Gulden I feel are better as receivers second or third in the chain. Rowbottom has become a nothing player. Sheldrick & Roberts might be promising, but then so was Rowbottom at the same age. So I dunno... are the options there like I thought they were? Maybe. But maybe not.
