Adam Cooney joins Essendon

I wonder what other pick 37s have turned out like

We have taken Goldstein, Thompson, Macmillan at 37, took Swallow at 43. It is more hit or miss than earlier rounds but there are often decent quality players in the vicinity.

Strange decision really

Essendon appear to be stuck in no man's land, not going to challenge for the flag in the immediate future yet continue to top up with known quantities who all have some severe limitations who don't really offer much...almost as if happy to accept mediocrity?!
Gotta get to some sort of level near the top before you challenge.

giles is a useful pickup, once he plays a few games in the victorian footy spotlight he might be better appreciated. good hands, nice in front of goal, has a few years in front of him.
not sure about the other two though. didn't have to cough up anything for gwilt i guess.

Giles could not break into GWS ruck with Mumford having 80 year old knees

Speaking of 80 year old knees, Cooneys best comment when coming to Essendon was the Gym has soft spongy floors. That is really important for people with knees older then Jesus.

In saying that you had to do what you had to with Ryder wanting to leave. You are now into the first round which is a win.
Mumford was the best ruckman in the league this year when he played. When Mumford was out Giles did play. I don't think Giles is a gun but to imply he's a spud because Mumford was getting a game ahead of him is ridiculous.

Mostly copied from a post I made on our board regarding list management:

- We had a 4-5 year period starting around 99-00 when our general recruiting (both trading and drafting) was not great. It was this period of poor recruitment, combined with the loss of virtually all our premiership players in a very quick period that saw us at our lowest on field performance from 2006-2010. Left us with a GAPING hole in quality senior players.
- We set out to rebuild through the draft, and generally speaking have recruited quite well from 2005ish onwards.
- We reached a point ~2012 where our list profile was very healthy. We weren't carrying many players close to retirement, and on paper our side was pretty decent, so we started targeted recruitment of players and scaled back our 'draft only' approach (Goddard, Chapman etc).

Generally speaking, Essendon 'should' be in the theoretical premiership window right now.

Now you can debate whether or not you believe its simply a lack of quality, or the influence of the ASADA scandal, but one/both has stopped us from looking a premiership side. Personally I'm of the belief that the off-field issues are the primary point of concern.

As to your post above, that Essendon continue to 'top up' its only really been the last two years that we've actively sought older players.

Now, for strategy directly related to our draft sanctions.

The reason draft sanctions 'hurt' a club is because they prevent you from bringing in quality youngsters.

Last year, Dodoro turned picks 26, 48 and 55 into Zach Merrett, Shaun Edwards, Kurt Aylett and Orazio Fantasia. I rate all four, but Merrett alone now appears to be a massive win.

This year, we'll be taking two picks inside the top 20.

Now obviously we'll only know with the benefit of hindsight, but its possible that Essendon may be the first club to have successfully countered draft sanctions.

Chappy 18
Cooney 15
Winderlich 18
Dempsey 22
Watson 22
Goddard 22

So high numbers of games.

The one thing not mentioned is the earning the youngsters will get from another decent midfielder showing the youngsters how to go about it.

Fair to say I'm stoked.

Yep, I would have to agree if they play that number of games....... In 2014 it was less games but you're allowed to be optimistic. Hasn't been reported that Cooney is not a leader/teacher type and that was part of the problem at the Bullies?

2014 games
Winderlich 16
Dempsey 18
Watson 15
Goddard 20

Unfortunate choice of words perhaps?

What some in here obviously don't realise is that if we had kept 37, it would've had to have been used on a rookie upgrade. So we wouldn't have been able to draft a kid with that pick anyway. It would've been a waste keeping it.

So basically, we got Cooney for nothing.

Without Cooney though you have an extra list spot so can draft someone and then upgrade that rookie with a later pick?

Love to know what evidence that:

a. Cooney is a cripple. He actually had a fine season this year.
b. Giles is a list clogger. Can't get a game with Mumford around, so he gets a regular opportunity.

He had a good year last year, he was crap this year 14th in B&F with guys like Wallis and Hrovat finishing higher from far less games.

Good on him for extracting an extra year out of career though, he will play some good games but don't expect a lot of two way running.

Regardless of whether we got Cooney or not we'd only be able to have 2 live picks due to the size of our list, with our last active pick being used as a rookie upgrade.

It's just that with Cooney now we have to make a forced, unnecessary list change before the draft where someone will have to be delisted and then re-rookied. Not sure if this could've been done to accomodate a rookie at 37 or not.

When the bottom of the table team gives you away for nothing, it says a lot.

Doesn't really say anything. He still finished 10th in their B&F. 28 year old role player in a bottom side, there isn't much room for limited role players when you need to blood kids. He'll be reliable without doing anything special and provide some depth where we need it. Not worth reviling.

I'm a bit confused. The media reports certain players as saying their preferred destination club is Essendon. Is that just player manager spin because they are players with limited options or going for Ryder's leftover money?

Or are there players who actually want to go there? Why would a player want to go there right now? Huge cloud hanging above their head, uncertainty about the coach, no particular enviable culture left after the supplements debacle. Is it just a paycheck for a lot of guys and they aren't even motivated by club? It's a bit hard to buy that Cooney had a burning desire to play for Essendon.
