Today Damo said we have won only four of our last nineteen Friday night games (since 2012) - hate to tell you Damo but it ain’t going to get any better any time soon.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.
2 out of the last 4
4 out of the last 9

How about this:
” after losing 8 Friday night games in a row a much improved Saints outfit have won four out of their last nine”

And what does losing the Friday nights given to us in 2014 or 2015 or 2018, mean anyway. Half the side is different for starters. And we were absolute crap that we were losing in every time slot we played in.

It's not that we 'choked' come Friday night. We were just crap and playing against sides who were better than us that we would have lost against whether it was Friday night or the graveyard Sunday 4:40.

probably to ensure that we never get another friday night again.

Had a bit of a look at the Friday night games he refers to.

Let's look at the respective positions each team finished in these years:

Adelaide: 3rd in 2012 (we finished 9th), 2nd in 2017 (we finished 11th)
Brisbane: 15th in 2014 versus us 18th
Carlton: they finished 18th in 2018 - we finished 16th
Collingwood - finished 8th in 2013 (16th), 11th in 2014 (18th), 12th in 2015 (14th)
Essendon - 8th in 2017 (11th), 11th in 2018 (16th)
Fremantle - 6th in 2012 (9th)
Geelong - 7th in 2012 (9th)
GWS: 4th in 2017 (11th) 10th in 2020 (5th)
Hawthorn: 1st in 2013 versus 16th
North Melbourne: 15th in 2017, we finished 11th
Richmond: 12th in 2012 (9th), 8th in 2013 (16th), 3rd in 2018 (16th), 1st in 2020 (5th)

So what this tells me is apart from Richmond in 2012 and North in 2017 every game we won was against opposition that finished lower and every game we lost was against opposition that finished higher (in some cases significantly higher) whereas if we played more teams around our level it might be more weighted in our favour. Interestingly we have NEVER lost to Carlton on a Friday night with five wins from five games (99, 2007-8-9 and 2018)

Also, as you can see this includes zero games against Gold Coast, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney, West Coast and the Bulldogs.

So as some have said - you can make stats say whatever you want. If we go back just a few more years it gives us three wins against the dogs, another two wins against Adelaide, a win against Port, another win against Carlton, a win against Collingwood, two wins against Geelong and another win and a draw against Richmond, another draw against Hawthorn and another win against Freo.

IN fact over 2008-11 (when we made finals) we won 3/5 in 2008; 4 of 4 in 2009, 5 of 7 in 2010 (including a draw) and 3 of 6 (including a draw) in 2011
That's 15/22 during those three years - so if you take the last five years where we made finals we are 16/24 which is FAR better than the example Damo has drawn.

I've been saying it for a while, when we have a marquee style game we tend to lose. And lose badly. No surprise to see our (few) Friday Night games suffer the same fate as our NZ ANZAC Day games, Good Friday game, China game, Heart Of The Nation game vs Melb last year, etc.

Yeah marquee games have hurt us - although I'd be interested to see how Thursday night games have gone over the same period. Might look it up myself coz don't think it would be too bad

Round 5 2021 - lost to Richmond by 86 points
Round 5 2020 - Beat Carlton by 18 points
Round 10 2020 - Beat Gold Coast by 10 points
Round 17 2020 - Lost to West Coast by 15 points
Round 5 2013 - Lost to Swans by 16 points (Anzac Day game in NZ)
Round 5 2011 - Beat Brisbane by 13 points

2013 and 2011 are irrelevant to todays team.

Hang on a minute. So what you’re suggesting is that teams tend to win more against sides below them and lose more to teams above. Surely not?

No Damo is suggesting that we are no good on Friday nights - I'm just making the point that over his selective period we've played substantially better teams which is why we've lost.

So who is going to be the first to apologise to Barrett regarding the whole Hannebery "saga"?
Not sure he was far off the mark, regardless of what you think of his other "journalism"
No apology, he was too smug about it.
