There are 3 players in the world in cricket, especially tests that dont get rattled by a situation no matter how many balls they have faced: Khawaja, Williamson and Pujara. They treat each delivery accordingly and play shots where they think runs are there.

The old school test batsmen that know to bat time and accumulate a long test innings are a dying breed unfortunately.

Most batsmen these days are more interested in learning how to score quickly with ramp shots and reverse hits to make money in T20s.

And thats where T20 cricket has revolutionsed test cricket , to the haters or lovers of some or people who dont have the patience for it.

Scoring and surviving a day used to be the norm. These days scoring at 4-6 runs per over in a days play is the new motto mindset of test batters that have started or grew up in T20 cricket.

Don't get me wrong, clearly a quality player but NZ do get to play the minnows a hell of a lot compared to India and Australia.

Australia - Average of 41.12
England - Average of 36.85
India - Average of 37.87

13 x 100's v Bangladesh, Windies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe + you can add the 3 against South Africa D side... that's 16 100's v minnows.

Whats a decent set of shield runs in a season to knock on the door of selection to the Australian team?

Current season (im assuming that includes todays matches):



If I stand to be corrected in the past, you needed a good solid 900 to 1000 runs or more to be knocking on the door. Not sure if its me but those numbers seem a lot lower by inspection.

Plenty of blokes made back to back seasons of 900+ and never got a look in.

I will add the season was played primarily in Summer, this doesn’t happen anymore due to BBL knocking out December & January in which you’d expect to see sone flat tracks

Smith doesn't get to bat against the Aussie bowlers and also gets to bat on the flattest tracks in the world in Aussie. Ball rarely swings or seams like it does in NZ

Well he certainly dined out in this asterisk series. He bullied South Africa's third XI very expertly.

NZ win by 7 wickets and we have finally won a test series against SA, a bit hollow though as it wasn't against their full strength team.

We will have a much tougher test against Australia in a couple of weeks time.

That's an understatement, none of their bowlers for instance would get a game in their full strength team. They had 8 test debutants in the first test in this series.

I guess you you compared this trio for instance to the likes of Lillee, there is no fair comparison regarding the respective batsmen they bowled to. Lillee bowled to much better Pakistani line-ups too. The other factor worth considering is that in past times bats put more value on their wicket. There was no such thing as T20 and techniques were often better.
