Maybe not to you and I because both of us probably watch too much football. But to the masses to whom the AFL is trying to appeal, there is a clash.

everyone can pick out the differences between the STK & COL match-day strips.

but anyone who denies that they're similar & may cause confusion during a match is just being stubborn and choosing to ignore the issue - mainly due to emotional attachment which impairs logic.

the objective of the match-day uniform is to clearly and effectively differentiate the two match-day teams - for players, for the spectators at the ground, and for the millions watching at home.

Who finishes top gets to wear the home jumper.

It is fair, i have no problem with it.
3 weeks ago. I wonder who is the home team?

Sure the rule is fair, but thats not the rule. Well not into yesterday that is.

Funny how it's only supporters whinging about this, i am certain the players don't give a rats arse as to what they a wearing on saturday, Traditional or non- traditional they are playing a Grand final and not a back yard kick about. Either jumper isn't going to make the team play any better and it's still the same players still wearing the red, white and black. Go Saints

Actually the players probably do care if they are being geniunely honest. They dont want to make mistakes in handballing to an opposition player because out of the corner of their eye they saw a glimpse of what they thought was a teammates jumper.

And if you think things like this woudnt happen in a Grand Final, just ask Phil Manassa who gave away a goal in the 1977 Grand Final exactly this way.

It shouldn't affect the way we play but there may be a psychological factor in us wearing the away jumper as opposed to the normal traditional home jumper. You play for the jumper and that normally means the traditional jumper. There is an emotional attachment to the traditional jumper that an away jumper doesn't have.

Agreed. I'm hoping North will do this in 25 years time when the afl schedule our next home game against the pies.

ROFL Norf ha ha they can't afford it ROFL ROFL BWAHAHAHAHa

I would of thought, the home team doesn't wear white shorts.
Its part of the best match policy the AFL has, if a teams home jumper has a fair bit of white and their opponents does not it does not make any sense whatsoever for the team with no white to wear white shorts especially when their home shorts and full uniform contain no colours in their opponents jumpers

As said before, Geelong often wear white shorts for a home game, but still wear their home jumper

In this case no changing of just shorts will make a difference

Bullshit! Competitors play for themselves, their teammates, for the win, and ultimately the premiership.

The majority of players in the AFL are drafted to the club after supporting other teams as kids.

Your post is typical of the emotional supporter, as every other post by COL & STK fans in this thread is.

You obviously havent played football at any high level have you?

I really would like to know WHO in this thread has played football at any real level.
Because some of these facts getting thrown out are just hilarious.
The only clash is shorts, the socks for the Saints are hooped and can be easily seen at ground level to be different. If the Saints changed there shorts I could not see any issue. And even with the same shorts it is easy to distinguish between who is who.

Tell me, who is going to mess these two jumpers up from behind? This whole thing is just ludicrise and is just another McGuire/Demetriou stranglehold on the AFL.

They do look at as a whole, thats why Geelong often wears white shorts to stop a clash even if the home side

So I see as minor premiers Collingwood wore black shorts in 66 and now yet again they get the same result, so for all the complaining its very consistent, difference is these days the shorts and jumpers come as a package so Black shorts = black jumper, St Kildas white shorts go with their white jumper

What i mean is clubs & fans do not consider their match-day strip as a whole. When clubs and fans talk about the issue, it is always in regards to the guernsey. The shorts are generic and for most clubs it changes depending on whether they are at home or away. It's been like this since 1924. In finals these days, the AFL makes the call on shorts.

stop nitpicking at details. it's obvious which guernsey belongs to which club. the issue are the similarities between the two.

it's not just the players or spectators at the game who are taken into account. the overall viewing experience for the millions who are watching on television is a major factor.

It only takes one player to mess up and its potentially game over. These jumpers are WAY too similar. Both are 70% black with significant amounts of white. Change the StKilda back to red - or at worst - tricolours in reverse of the front - and there are no problems. Thats not too disssimilar to what they were prepared to wear in 1997.

Side-on from the left, these jumpers are almost impossible to tell apart in a split-second.

Would you be happy seeing Essendon wearing an away or clash strip in a GF? Most Essendon supporters kick up a stink if you have to wear a clash strip for a normal H&A game, let alone a GF.

As for the players, they may not have all barracked for the club they play for but I'm sure most of them form an emotional attachment to the club once they start playing for them and to the traditional jumper. If given the choice most players would prefer to wear that traditional jumper on the biggest stage in a GF rather than a clash jumper.

Sounds like you have both been brainwashed by the AFL into thinking there is a clash between the two jumpers. I have never heard of there being a clash between the Collingwood and St Kilda jumpers up until recently and never had a problem telling them apart. They are very different in design from front on and with different coloured shorts and socks you would have to have serious eyesight problems to get the two teams confused.

Well I wonder if the old Sainter's will bring out a 2010 Grand Final Geurnsey with all thats different is the back in red or something lol.

Not sure about a red back but a white back would probably look OK with the normal traditional design on the front. I doubt they would bring out a different jumper just for one game though.

Will most likely be the traditional jumper or the clash jumper.

We've worn [our home jumper] from the very first game we played in, so we're delighted to be wearing it on Saturday," Collingwood president Eddie McGuire said.

No eddie, collingwood played in a white jumper with black stripes and black numbers, on sat you'll be playing in a black jumper with white stripes and white numbers. check the 1990 premiership photo.

oh well, this is okay for st kilda because collingwood have never won a grand final in the mostly black jumper.

and if the saints win it, they should just change into their home jumper for the presentation like spain did when they won the world cup.

They do one of promotional jumpers a lot.
Save a lot of headache at least and still would stick it up Eddie.

Don't know how Eddie gets a mention...He is against clash strips and is the only Pres who has steadfastly stood against any change.

You sure he isn't talking about the 2010 season here?
