At this point, you'd have to go with

Out - Katich
In - Hughes

This is a no-brainer. Katich will have to fully recover from that achilles injury in order to play. Give Hughes the chance, I really want him to succeed.

Out - North
In - Khawaja/Smith

The selectors must have run out of patience with Marcus. His continuing failure to score runs under pressure is a huge issue for the team. He has to go, now. I have a feeling that if they do drop North, they'll bring in Smith. I would prefer Khawaja, but Smith offers that extra spinning option, which the selectors seem to love, however vanilla they might be.

I think the bowling line-up will remain unchanged. Johnson will have to take more wickets at shield level, and Harris has clearly been our best bowler in this test. Not much point in dropping Doherty for Hauritz either, it's just six of one, half a dozen of the other with them two.

Going by that, the line-up will look like this -

Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Smith
Haddin
Doherty
Harris
Siddle
Bollinger

I get the feeling that Johnson will be back in consideration at least.

If he was going to be out for more than a short time you would think he would have gone to play with WA to find some form. I think he was dropped more for a wakeup call than anything else.

Can't see them playing a full time spinner at the WACA - and it's not a great pitch for a leggie like Smith

I'd reckon we'll go in

Watson
Khawaja
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
North
Haddin
Johson
Harris
Siddle
Bollinger

The only other thought might be to promote Huss to open and Khawaja to 5

Kwahja failed against England for Australia A, Hughes hit an 80. Hughes would be a better bet.

Just don't see Watson as an opener. He has had some success but never delivers the really big scores that Langer/Hayden or Taylor/Slater ever did.

Kwajah could easily take North's spot.

Not sure Smith has really done enoug for NSW.

He will be. When WA actually have a game (though the weather in Qld since the test finished has been awful so he may do well to get onto the field)

I just don't see the point of wholesale changes, when I don't think they've had the same 11 play in two consecutive tests since maybe midway through the Ashes last year?

Anyone advocating more than 3 changes, is just deadset moronic. Even the absolute rabble sides don't make that many unforced changes between tests. Most of the proposed changes involve players who have been in the side for one test (Harris, Bollinger), two tests (Doherty, Siddle), for players who have been dropped for one test without any match form to prove otherwise (Hilf, Johnson) and players who have had no experience in a big match even close to this.

Don't underestimate the effect a settled line up has on a team.

yeah but the "settled line up" should have been set up last summer against the chaff of world cricket and given time to settle. any thoughts of a settled line up were finally laid to rest when they brought in siddle and doherty out of the blue. its too late for a settled line up now. we have to pull something out our arse.

Dropping Hughes when they did, whilst keeping North, is looking a worse and worse bet.

Katich/Hughes (depending on fitness of the Kat)
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin
Hauritz/O'Keefe
Harris
Copeland/Siddle
Bollinger

I dont think mass changes are the answer, not mid series anyway. Thats really the path England took throughout the 90's, and they were constantly shit.

Hopefully Perth offers a little more for the bowlers.

They haven't had a chance to. How many injuries, especially to fast bowlers have they had in the past 18 months?

Just about every member of the team has missed a test due to injury in that period of time.

England's best XI has looked as settled as Australia's at their peak for about two years now.

What exactly constitutes mass changes then? :S

Apart from Johnson, everybody has been injured. The selectors never knew what was the most effective attack coming in. Batting has been stable though.

Exactly. You hear stupid scenarios like "Oh you can't play X bowler and Y bowler in the same side", yet most of the mooted combinations never have played a test together, or at most maybe a handful.

Easy to criticize Ponting, but really not a lot of opportunities to test say Siddle into the wind, and Harris downwind, when they've played one test together.

Batting side of things, you almost have to over-stabilize, as has been to the benefit of Hussey and North. Would the criticism of the use of Hughes be the same, if Katich or Watson had the same injury luck as Hilf, Siddle and Harris?

I reckon you have to ask yourself, whether your starting XI for Perth as some guy, and your starting XI as the chairman of selectors would be the same.

I know my best XI would probably have about 6 changes to the current line up, but I think they're doing the right thing by gradually changing and introducing the right faces into the mix, and giving them ample opportunity to bang the door down if they're good enough.

Nothing wrong with incumbency privileges.

Hughes
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson
Smith
Haddin
Johnson
Harris
Siddle

Hughes (recognised opener) -> Katich (injury)
Ferguson (either him or Khawaja) -> North (shitkicker)
Smith (can do as much with the ball and is a very handy bat) -> Doherty (not good enough)

tell that to hauritz and bollinger. fair enough harris was making a fair old racket but doherty and siddle weren't exactly knocking the door down. I suspect their respective friendships with punter had more of a role to play than they should have.

the time for experimenting was a year ago. we didn't. now we have to bodge it up on the fly
