With Mark Williams on as an assistant, you would think that one of the targets would be a Port Adelaide player.

I'd reckon one of Hamish Hartlett or Jackson Trengove would be right in the mix.

3-4 very good players, like Rischitelli, Brennan, Bock.

Then a whole bunch of also rans.

The main problem with this whole setup is the secrecy aspect. The "in principle" agreements are very unfair to the player's current club if they are planning their future and development around a player who refuses to disclose their intention to leave. If it emerged mid-season that Scully was intending to leave Melbourne for GWS, I would prefer that he not play another game and all efforts be redirected to players who are committed to the club.

Of course, if he does leave, that would actually be evidence that he isn't the sort of character you want at your club. A top-flight player will always earn a very good wage and will be set up for life. To be obsessed with that aspect of your life at the age of 20 is ridiculous. Football success should be the first thought, the riches will follow. Success is more likely at Melbourne than GWS for the immediate future.

I hope he proves to have a better character than the current speculations. If you go by the general opinions on BF, money is the most important thing in life and everybody can be bought.

I haven't maximised my earning potential. I could have earned 10 times what I have, but I chose not to because it would have come at the cost of my general well-being: social-life, mental well-being, work/recreational balance, relationships. What you are saying is unbelievably short-sighted. You are saying that your family mostly wants you to secure your financial future, even if that means neglecting all other values. Newsflash: when the main focus is on money, families don't stay together. How is that securing your family's interests? You can't do everything in life - there aren't enough hours in the day. You have to make choices and sacrifices. If Tom Scully elected to stay in Melbourne because of his close ties with friends family and teammates, would he be wrong, naive and irresponsible to himself and his future family? Or would it just be a choice he made on reflection of all the implications?

People who maximise and prioritise money will lose out in other areas. People who forego some of that money may well be far better off because they have more balance and more aspects to their life. You are forgetting that maximising income is beside the point if you become a multi-millionaire. You can only use so much money. There is a point where it becomes pointless and just an end to itself. You can be sure that there are many sportspeople who would trade a lot of their maximised-earnings for sporting success. By your logic, that would actually make them a naive or a fool.

Hypothetical: Choose A or B.

A) You earn $1million per year for 10 years at an unsuccessful club.
B) You earn $500k per year for 10 years, but earn 2 premiership medallions.

Your statement says you must choose A. I say B is the better option. Don't forget that you don't just sit on your bum after you finish playing football. You can still earn money after football. Even by your logic, your ability to make money after football might be far greater if you can sell yourself on your club loyalty and success. A mercenary with no class or footballing story would probably earn less after football. You look at things too narrowly. Money is just one aspect of living. It isn't everything.

Campbell Brown was worth end of first round and Gazza was mid first round + first round immediately after your first selection. So somewhere inbetween?

They'd all be worth the same as Ablett. Swan's form over the past three years has been the equivalent of Ablett's whilst Pendlebury and Thomas, whilst less prolific, are three years younger and still potential ten + year players.

I'm saying all teams should be protected with the same rules protecting recent draft picks - no favouritism. The issue of tanking is a separate issue which the AFL has also struggled to deal with.

sounds like melbourne failed to consider that its top draft pick when signed may well be target of GWS. but its always different view when its your own club affected. which is understandable.

although many WCE fans will have big grisn on their faces if GWS land Murphy. i am sure old threads with Carlton fans telling us to get over it, how a player can do what he wants etcetra etcetra will be used for reference.

why on earth would scully postpone contract discussions with the dees? the offical line from his management is that he wants to concentrate on playing. what a load of crap. the kid is coming off a stellar debut season and is widely recognised as one of the budding superstars of the comp. his bargaining power is at its highest point right now and will not increase regardless of how well he starts the year. he can only lose by having a dip in form. he's signed a heads of agreement and will be going to GWS, no doubt

If Scully explodes into 2011 (as I personally think he will), of course his value is going to go up, particularly with the GWS spectre on the horizon.

Seriously if that is all they manage to sign Scully and Swan, those players are hardly going to be able to lead a group of kids to premiership glory in seven years.

If you look at Melbourne's rebuild, it has taken 3 years to get us to this stage, that includes development of young players strength and experience just to compeat with other sides. They may have talent but it is going to take four to five years for most sides to really develop, and play as a unit. More developed sides are going to physically smash them every week.

Then after two years, their young players are going to be picked off, especially when some players are probably being paid better than other, and opportunities for regular games are not comming.

It will be interesting to to see whether Gazza can play as well without any real experienced talent around him.

When I made that remark I was responding to a concern from a Brisbane supporter. I'm not really up in arms about this. This will impact most clubs in some way, not just Melbourne. As for Scully, I'm looking at it as a litmus test - if he stays at the Dees he will be a future leader and champion for the club. If he leaves, well we don't need somebody like that anyway. It will sort itself out.

The fact is that money does talk.
AFL footballers in the current day & future, will be lucky to get more than 12 years out of their bodies. Who can begrudge them going to another club for more money? It would hurt like hell to lose Murphy (I wouldn't want to lose anyone regarded as being in our top 25 at the club), but I could absolutely see why he, or any othe player, would do it.
I've been with my current employer for over 15 years. Had our ups & downs along the journey, as most people would have. If another organisation in the same line of work came along & said "we'll give you double-triple your current salary for the same job", I'm out of there.
Expect more of the same as we've just had with Ablett. The papers will apply the blowtorch for as long as big names remain unsigned throughout the season.

Not going to make myself look stupid by stating unequivocally that Bartel will stay with Geelong (especially after seeing the cognitive dissonance from certain other Geelong supporters RE: "Untouchable" Ablett leaving) but Bartel does have a history of stalling contract negotiations until the last minute. In 2006 he was gone for all money, signed, sealed and delivered to Collingwood... until he re-signed with Geelong.
