If you go by my criteria of any player drafted on or after the year 2000, so players like Scarlett, Pav, Buckley, Hird Voss etc are ineligible.

Judd's record stands by itself, and this year first player i believe to poll more then 20 brownlow votes in 5 seasons.

For sheer consistency the only player that comes to Judd for mantle of best 21st century player is Gary Ablett Jnr, but his first season didn't set the world on fire.

Yes I know this century is only 11 years old, but clearly Judd will be remembered as this century's first AFL immortal, will be named as a legend in the AFL Hall of Fame when he retires, and rightfully so.

Gary Ablett polled 20 votes in 5 consecutive season 2007-2011. Much more dominate than Judd. Only reason he hasn't won another Brownlow is because he has been in a good side and that he moved to the worst team in the competition and still finished in the top 5 or 6.

Ablett also polled more than 20 brownlow votes in 5 seasons this year... and he did them consecutively.

Judd did spend the vast majority of the 2007 season struggling with his groins*. But yeah Ablett's record is just as impressive as Judd's.

*lol

would love to know where others think Judd places in terms of best of all time? Sure he has done some good things at Carlton, but Judd was near on untouchable when he was at his peak, at the Eagles.

Clearly Judd is the greatest player of all time. Bruce McAveney said he should go straight to legend in the afl hall of fame. Infact I think they should do it while he is still playing.

Ablett jnr has scored 20 or more 5 times consecutively, but yes Judd did the 5 times first, it think it was about 5 minutes before ablett did.

Now that I have the smart arse comments out of the way.

Ablett is on par if not slightly ahead but Buddy is mowing them both down.

Yup. Buddy will mow down Judd, but Ablett is the elite of the elite. He will be harder to catch for Buddy. Ablett is the greatest player of the decade so far in my opinion.

How can he be the greatest player of the 21st Century when the spud can't even kick??

Lol @ his 53% DE in the final VS WCE, cost them the game. HA HA HA

Also I think against the pies this year, had something like 40% DE (maybe less) and got 3 votes! More than half his possessions were handballs, and the spud still couldn't hit a target.

Easily the most over-rated player of all time.

Yup. Nearly every neutral believes this as well.

Ablett = footballer. Judd = athlete.
Athlete? Slowly losing his pace, barely gets a foot off the ground, yet he is still playing well. Quiet clearly a footballer. Ridiculous to call an inside mid an athlete. Football smarts is nearly the no.1 quality needed.

Ablett for me though.

True, but I believe that Buddy has every chance is being regarded as better than ablett by the end of his career because he is an absolute freak. But he still has a way to go but he does have age on his side.

Did I mention he was a freak?

Hehe :p

IF Buddy can continue to kick 80 goals a year and average 19 possessions a game like this year for a few more years, then yeah he would catch Ablett. There's no reason why he can't, barring serious injury. He is only 24 and already a 3xAA, 2xColeman medalist, which is remarkable for a KPF in the modern game.

Ablett is better than Judd.
Judd can be tagged out of games completely, Ablett is near impossible to tag.

Judd only 2x has 600+ poss a season
Ablett 3x has over 600 poss and a further 2x has 700+ poss a season, kicks more goals and uses the ball much much better than Judd, and breaks away equally as good from stoppages.

Judd will be remembered as a champ though, just not as good as Ablett.

On what basis is Ablett ahead of Judd?

Sure, Ablett's 5 years has been phenomenal and clearly the best player over that period...however Judd's been second best.

Judd was arguably the best player in the league between 2003-2006, Ablett nowhere near it.

On Brownlow votes:
20+: Judd 5, Ablett 5 in a row
15+: Judd 8 in a row, Ablett 5 in a row
10+: Judd 9 in a row, Ablett 5 in a row

I'm sure Ron The Bear will tell me if I'm wrong, but as far as I'm aware, nobody's ever managed 15+ Brownlow votes bar Gary Dempsey (who did it 12 times). Nobody has done it 8 years in a row.

In the period 2000-2011, I'm not sure how you can question that Judd's been the best player. 9 years amongst the game's elite is better than Ablett's 5.

I'd go as far to say that Judd's been close to, if not the most consistently brilliant player to ever play the game.

Ablett at Gold Coast puts him above Judd.

When Judd got to Carlton, they were nowhere near as bad as Gold Coast this year. Ablett still managed Brownlow votes galore and is the AA Captain.

Adam Goodes might also have something to say.

Who knows what Pendlebury will become. Could become a god at the rate he's going.

He's a freak who is still a terrible shot for goal. And will always be in the slightly less than that elite (all-time) category for this reason. If you want to split hairs, he is easily in the top 5 forwards currently playing (and thus could be considered elite) but when you put him up against the Carey, Lockett, Dunstall types, it's laughable. Still very young and could (as scary as it is) improve into this category.

On topic, Ablett is a far better player than Judd and deserves the title. The only reason Ablett has less Charlies is because he played for a good team. Judd is brilliant when he is on but still has a few weaknesses (eg his kicking), whereas Ablett can have a quiet 20-25 possession game but still hurt you by kicking 3 goals.

Yeah prety much spot on.

Ablett could be in Leigh Matthews, Wayne Carey company by the time his career is out. Could be on the 5 greatest players to ever play.

Judd def a tier or two below that.

This season kicking 80 goals and averaging 19 possessions a game is something Carey managed to do how many times? In the modern game as well, where scores are lower and presses/zones make it harder for KPF, it's a remarkable achievement.

Terrible shot for goal? Is that the best you can do? Really? His overall goal kicking percentage isn't that bad. Considering where he takes most of his shots from ( angles, general play, 45+ out ), he's really not that bad of a kick.
