That wasn't an isolated incident. I think that Buckley had enough of Dawes dropping marks and if he had any other ruck options we would not have seen Dawes again for the season. Picking up players that aren't cutting it elsewhere is not going to make us stronger and just takes up a spot on the list.
Dawes had a bad year this year but can play good footy (2010 & 2011 are good examples - under Malthouse no less).

If every player who has a bad year is immediately a spud, then we should sack half of our team....we had a shocker. There are gifs of Gibbs floating around, much like the Dawes one. Does it mean he's a bad player...or the scapegoat in a bad team performance?

If we could get Dawes cheap....i'd take him in a heartbeat. Forward line of:
Walker Waite Hampson (with some ruck duties)
Betts Dawes Garlett
Have the Cas or Mitchell on the bench, and when Waite injures himself in round 3, then whoever out of Cas and Mitchell who isnt getting a game, can come into the side.

I cant agree with the senyance i have highlighted, Sydney Swans are a club who pick up players who arent cutting it and turn them into great players, something i would like to see us do. I would be very happy to have Dawes at Carlton..
Generally the Swans will take players who have shown something but for whatever reason are not getting opportunities.

I didn't rate Dawes performance in dominant Pies teams of 2010,2011 and have less regard for his output now the Pies are back in the pack. It would seem that Buckley is of similar opinion having recruited a direct replacement for his role who is 5 years older.

I suppose all of Dawes' half-decent form may have been the result of Mick getting the best out of him.

Under FIGJAM, well...

Not saying we should take him, his best is probably still very average. But interesting nonetheless. A 24yr tall old being swapped out for a 30 yr old journeyman tall probably says a lot though.

Similar comments probably would have been made about Ted Richards/Josh Kennedy/Mattner/Shaw etc, but the Swans have the capacity to take players to another level which is why they have been so successful, they have proven that the draft is not the only way to build a side.

Why no Caddy?

I can only surmise that if Caddy really wants to join St Kilda, Geelong and Norf, then he wants more money and the chance to be a marquee player. Their salary caps should have more room to move than Carlton. Though Norf would be the last club I would choose if I wanted big money that would be guaranteed.

Membrey is a jet! Personally I believe the pick we take at 11 will come out just as good of a player as caddy, if stringer gets back to 100% which is questionable he'll be the best of the lot... So regardless of caddy there is a lot to get excited about with our first pick!

Can't understand why we wouldn't just use pick 11 on Caddy, especially if we're going to use that pick on a midfielder anyway. Draft picks between 10 and 20 are notoriously frustrating. Our own Kane Lucas is an example, not to mention the plethora of players Melbourne are losing (Gysberts, Cook). Caddy has all the makings of a goal kicking ball magnet. His disposal is tidy as well. It's a far bigger risk to not take him IMO.

To the best of our knowledge, pick #11 is on the table but GC want more.

The compo pick from Geelong may also suit them more being that they can use it next year and not this one.

So you want us to use Pick 11 on Caddy?
I was under the impression that you were actually in the know as you mentioned on the Draft & Trading board that we have already tabled pick 11 for Caddy.....

Dawes is just not the answer.

If/while Cloke and Tippett are available, we should be excited and talking about spending squillions on bringing in a DIFFERENCE maker. Blues should be (have been) into those guys for all they're worth. Those guys are The Answer.

Dawes is not a difference-maker. He was putrid this year. Playing on second (and third) defenders. Because we "missed out" on the "big fish" forward options, doesn't mean we immediately should switch our sights to the next guy available.

Levi Casboult - who I think is a long way from being a star - looked every bit as useful and functional as Chris Dawes this year. He's younger, cheaper and ours already. Why would we give up assets for Dawes when there's two young bucks in Casboult and Mitchell ready to have a go? We only need one of them to "make it", and in this argument "making it" means delivering at approximately Chris Dawes levels... which in 2012 was 14 goals in 20 games (eww), 5 marks (1 contested) per game. Levi in his first go in the bigs contributed 7 goals in 6 games (and a shitload of behinds!), 5 marks (2 contested) per game.

Say no to Dawes. Free agency is a gib. Don't be sucked in to buying things you don't want.

The Tippett situation is becoming quite interesting. The Adelaide media and the Crows have absolutely turned on him, pretty much running him out of town. Seems the media in particular took it very personally that one of the reasons he wanted to leave was his dislike of Adelaide, which while it comes as no surprise to anyone living outside that city apparently was met with disbelief by the locals. Wasn't welcome at the Crows B&F etc had to say goodbye to his team mates with a text message.

Regardless of whether he deserves such treatment or not, he has such a firm grip on the whip hand in this saga that I would have been a bit nicer to him if I was them. If he wants to go to the Suns he is garanteed to get to them in the PSD and Crows would get squat, while if he wants to take the money from the Swans (and the Suns wont match it) the Crows will have to take whatever Sydney offers because it is the only chance they will have to recoup something. Swans are laughing, Kurt is laughing, Adelaide is fuming.

Love it!

EDIT: Just read that GWS can indeed take him in the PSD, which changes everything, and Crows will play hard ball apparently. Still, only so much you can do when a player wants out, as with Jacobs when they had the whip hand. Hope they get a good shafting.

Gumbleton over Dawes.

Chris can play, but has gone hot and cold for most of his career. A role player with journeyman stamped all over. Gumby can still play and if he gets himself sorted will be a force.

Put Gumby up for a 2 year with Thornton-esque money. If he spends more time in the infirmary then the field send him on his way at the end.

As people are fond of pointing out, this is our window. Taking a low cost high reward player seems instinctive

This draft is a good one. We must hold onto pick 11. No to Caddy. Will be a great player, but lets not pay overs. If we took Caddy, it would cost us more than pick 11. I hear they would want a player like Warnock or our 2nd round pick also thrown in.

I think Warnock should be traded. Plenty of clubs are looking for a ruckman with experience. We would most likely get a late first round pick.

With a draft like this, we should be trying to take it by the throat and get as many good picks as possible and set ourselves up for the next 10 years.

Players like Bower, Curnow, Davies, Ellard and Joseph should be used as pick upgrades. Say, Curnow and our third pick for some other teams 2nd round pick. Or Bower and our 4th round pick for Melbournes 3rd round pick.

Let's be a smart team and understand that we have the players right now that can challenge. 2 years ago we could have beat the Eagles over there if we had of had Kruezer, Gibbs (and I am sure there was another one mising). Then who knows what would have happened against Collingwood the week after... And we all know about 2012 horry story! But we should not be losing sight that we still want to be competitive in 4-7 years time when players like Judd, Simpson, Carrots and the others won't be around.

I would be all for getting Gumbleton. He looks like he might have finally got over his injury problems. Will be cheap $$ wise. He's a good kick for goal and has a good set of dukes. And he's only 24. Would prefer him over Dawes or Lynch anyday. He has a lot of upside for mine.

The problem is ... Essendon are notoriously difficult when it comes to making trades, even more so with their arch rivals.

It wouldn't suprise me if they demanded Pick #11 for Gumby, despite the fact that he has spent the majority of his time at the Epworth... then again, they do need to make room in the cap and he would make a fantastic FF/CHF.

Besides, Freo would have more money to throw around and one would think he would be more inclined to return home to Perth.

Whilst we have had all this talk of Cloke, Tippett and now Dawes, I'm a bit surprised we didn't look at Chaplin from Port.

A key back would have potentially freed up Henderson which gave us a key forward.

Anyone know why we didn't go after him ( or did we ?) - not good enough, too expensive ?

I can't understand the argument of money being an issue or an excuse for missing out on Caddy or Tippet. If we could fit Cloke onto the list given the ridiculous sums quoted on here and in the media, surely we could fit either of these two if we wanted them. Caddy is more likely to be put off by having to compete with Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Carrots, Robinson etc for a midfield spot. He is more likely to get game time at Norf or the Saints. Geelong would be attractive as several of their big name players are about retirement age so he will not have as long to wait if he can't force his way in initially.

Still have not seen a player taken that I am upset we missed out on.

Struggling to work out what was the question... ;)

Who can we add to the list in case Henderson, Waite, Hammer, Rowe, Mitchell, Casboult, Warnock and Kreuzer are all injured at the same time again?

Richmond remains optimistic of snaring Greater Western Sydney youngster Dom Tyson, as part of a three-club deal involving the Western Bulldogs.
Under the deal the Giants would gain the Dogs' picks five and six in exchange for the rights to midfield prospect Jack Martin in the 17-year-old mini-draft, and possibly another teenager, Jed Anderson, who is tied to GWS as a Northern Territory zone player.
The Bulldogs would also receive pick nine from Richmond, with Tyson moving to the Tigers despite having completed just the first of his initial two-season contract.
Effectively, the Giants would be trading Tyson, last November's No. 3 draftee, for picks five and six.
Surely not? The way I read it, GWS would be giving up Tyson and two mini draft picks for 5 and 6.

A real steal for Richmond if they pull it off. And for the Doggies for that matter. Please SOS don't do it.

Using them as a toilet for our discards hasn't helped.

I think the Tiges are absolutely attacking Free Agency/Trade Week the way teams should. They're ahead of the curve in targeting what they want and think is gettable, and making it happen. Kudos.

Who do you think we should have gone for from that grouping?

We just have to remember that for every player you pick up, one has to go.
That's the right way to go about it.

I'd argue he looks even more functional than Dawes in many ways already.

Dawes has a tank body and supposedly good hands but from what I've seen, doesn't use it too well or smartly. Levi, for all his cringe worthy set shots, showed genuine ability to use his body and position himself, which is a great natural trait to have, as it can be hard to teach.
