I can't see any good or bad, just ugly. I'm not going to put the viney performance in either because we've all wanked on about how good our kids will be. And we're still a disgrace.

From the coach to the studders, they can all g&gf.

As much pain as I am in I still think it's too early to call on Neeld. Let him see out the year at least. He inherited a steaming pile of shit.
Did he, or did he inherit a talented and promising list and turn it into a steaming pile of shit? For mine the jury is still well and truly out. It should be remembered that the list he inherited had a very promising 2010, playing a lot of good games including a draw and an unlucky 1 point loss against that years premiers and a 12 goal win over the 2011 premiers. They then started 2011 promisingly before a mid season slump ended in that horrible 189 point loss to the best team of the previous decade at their home ground where we always struggle. That saw a change of coach and a continued decline into the state we find ourselves in today, with a loss that, given the lesser opposition, was every bit as bad.

Good:

Viney's debut and Grimes' effort for 4 quarters. Sylvia had a dip of sorts.

Bad:

The selections. Not enough run in the players we went with. Blease as sub - if he is fit to play then play him for 4 quarters.

Clark's injury, fingers crossed.

Too many of our mainline players still lack too many elements and smarts.

Fugly:

Movement/effort/ball-use/gameplan did I mention ball-use?

We trot to contests, they sprinted. Always 2nd on the spread behind a white wave.

You can say that, but it is irrefutable that on field we are worse under Neeld than Bailey.

Maybe Bailey realised they were all front running softcocks and adjusted the game plan to suit, but Neeld won't budge and needs to move on another 15 at the end of the season before we see what he is trying to do - in more than short glimpses at least.

Sounds right enough to me. At least I sure as hell hope that's what's going on.

If all the other rebuild clubs are looking hugely better with 1-2 year coaches, then there is something fishy at the Dee's.

Our game plan is woeful, kick long to packs and hope we mark, when we don't just let all the opposition run off from all our slow tall guys. Someone tell Neeld it's 2013 and we can run into space these days.

Some observations from today;

- Viney will be a good player and certainly had a go today unlike many others with greater experience.
- Some questions for mind regarding recruiting players from other clubs, players like Rodan, Gillies, Byrnes were never match winners at other clubs and why would they be any benefit to making Melbourne a better team? I would have thought both Rodan and Byrnes best football was well behind them.
- Players such as Frawley and Jamar are "shell's of their previous best form. What has gone wrong there?
- Neeld's game plan - I dont think there is one. No options to turn to when things are no working out. Why Blease was not brought on earlier surprised me.
- Love Nathan Jones as he always gives 100%. Other players should follow in his footsteps. It surprises me he is not captain as he leads from the front.
- Is Neeld the right man for the job. I know he needs time but perhaps a more experienced coach is what is needed. Look at what Ross Lyon has done at Fremantle with an underperforming team.
- The skill level of Melbourne was poor to say the least. Turnovers and lack of confidence were obvious on many occassions.

I could tolerate a young team getting beaten badly as long as they have a go but today Melbourne didnt from my observations. Hopefully they can improve but if they dont it could be a very long year, especially with GC and GWS continuing to improve.

Would be interested in others thoughts?

What's with the constant flood? As soon as they get a run on, there is no forward line. Neeld, please explain.

Ugliest of ugly: Cam Pedersen, recruited as a big key tall/ruck, ducking his head in that marking contest. Just rips the soul out of a team and its supporters.

Yeah, that was bad. He's got a long way to go to earn back respect. Port players gave it to him too.

Good:
- Viney; great debut
- M. Jones; really solid, looks comfortable at the level
- Jamar; did well in the ruck and took some strong marks

Bad:
- Watts; yes, he was tagged - he was still poor, didn't work hard enough to get through it... let's hope he learns from this. At least he did okay defensively in the main.
- Frawley, Dunn and Garland; were all worse then Watts IMO - couldn't hit a target and if they did put teammates under immense pressure
- Grimes; got a lot of the ball - did nothing with it
- McKenzie; tried hard, butchered everything, wasn't clean

Ugly:
- Cohesiveness of the team; absolutely woeful, we had players spoiling each other when marking, players going for the same hard ball
- Spread; Port looked brilliant at it, the saw they had won the contest, then they ****ing bolted into space
- Midfield; atrocious, Jamar was competitive in the ruck but Port got too many easy clearances.

Much more in the ugly but I ceebs.

I saw that too. Fair play to them for getting into him, it was a p!ssweak act. A month in the magoos proving he has the desire to play hard footy before he's even considered for the seniors again.

The Good:

Viney
Matt Jones

At least the poor bastards we just recruited looked like they wanted to be there.

The Bad:

M.Jones managed to find space and really worked hard to present, but it was usually in the corridor and we never looked at him. We are playing the game plan but there needs to be flexibility.

The Fugly:

We robbed ourselves many times by having no one forward on the few occasions we got free. This really irks me as we have no one to kick to except the opposition sweeper.

The kick ins. We don't have a good plan 'a' and we defiantly don't have a plan 'b'. Very few of our players work for the ball coming out of defense (well to be fair, all over the field).

The lack of effort.

I was listening to SEN on my way out and they were talking about the players being boo'd down the race by our own supporters (not I). It is not a good look but this might be our 7th year of complete disappointment. Even if we turn it around we have still shown a fair amount of composure since the start of the 2007 season, the dawn of our shitness. The supporters have every right to give the players shit. We have all put up with some rubbish efforts, many in fact. But rd 1 at the G, Easter Sunday at lunch time, playing a club that were around our level pre match and we put in a performance like that. It wasn't that we played like shit, it was that most of our players didn't try after half time.

Fugly: Our kick in strategy. It's like a big game of Russian roulette (i.e. kick it to Jamar) except there are five bullets in the revolver. Every sixth time we may get out of it okay, otherwise it's just straight back in there.

Teams playing against us are rewarded for their inaccuracy.

We have a game plan? You must have a keener eye than me! ;)

Good: Viney, obviously. Grimes and Rodan tried hard. Both Jones's tried hard. Sylvia didn't look entirely disinterested. Clark flying for his marks.

Fugly: Almost everything else. Viney being our best player today is fugly because it was his first match, where the hell was everyone else, Tapscott? Garland? Howe? Watts? Pedersen? Sellar? etc

Not sure if we are playing a zone or not, but it's not much good when the opposition can stand in space anywhere they want on the ground and have the ball passed to them under no pressure time and time again.

Nothing felt different from 2012, I sure hope they can turn it around fast.

THIS. Our kick ins are a ****ing disgrace. Worst in the league, easy!

Apparently Viney addressed the playing group after the game.

Just a rumour but it says a lot about him AND our club.

It wouldn't surprise me, leadership is not always easy to see but at training it was clear he was showing his leadership.
