Not so sure about Doormat being under-rated - even by other club supporters. Ask anyone over 50 who followed the game, reckon they'll tell you. People like KB and other players from the seventies and eighties will certainly tell you.

Yeah, fair enough Thy. I am in the under 50 category - by quite a bit - and I think he just doesn't have the profile with my generation. I feel most of my non-Carlton mates wouldn't know anything about him apart from the hair...

From what I have read/been told he would be close to the best defender of all time, and for once I can use that kind of statement not as hyperbole. For that kind of status I feel he didn't leave much legacy behind (for those that didn't see him play).

All I'm saying is that he had a vision to have Princess Park as what the Docklands is now!If the Afl and the council co-operated we would be the biggest powerhouse in the game and he also wanted the proceeds from tv rights filmed at Princess Park to go to Carlton, now we get the scraps.
Gentle reminder...

Should be a swear filter auto-correct on that word, especially in combination with Park. .. and I'd go so far as to suggest 3 strikes and your username gets changed to a disney princess for a week (Snow White, Cinderella, etc). ..

I hear ya Ferrisb. As a Gen Y Carlton supporter, all I really know about Doull is what my papa has told me. I just read his Wikipedia page and I'm shattered I don't know more about him!

Absolutely this. As a 33-year old I would not have known how good Doull was for myself had my mother not inundated me with Carlton games from the 1960's and on via VHS tapes growing up. Certainly people within my age group and younger only ever really want to talk about the great midfielders, the spectacular goal kicking forwards or the players that became infamous for the biff. Our generation has missed out on the significance of the classy defender and for this I feel we have suffered tremendously. People now think that the Heath Shaw's are the greatest defenders of the game forgetting the legacy of greater players that came before them. To many of our generation the names of Doull, Southby and co are nothing but names on a locker where we no longer play. That deeply saddens me.

4 time premiership player
4 time b&F winner
Norm Smith Medalist
Team of the Century Defender
Unbelievable spoiler - rarely out marked
Always seemed to have time to make the right decision.

Under rated by only the ignorant

Thank you, that was awesome! I feel like I missed out on so much Carlton greatness :(
Will make you appreciate how hard we have done it during the dark years, we are used to greatness and have been around for a good portion of it but the dark years were a real shake up for most of us.:thumbsu:

Our sustained success going forward will certainly be hard earned and be a great achievement from all that are committed to this proud club.:rainbow:

When kicking out I never - not once - saw him land the ball anywhere except on a navy blue chest.

Thats the second time I have seen you post that word...

I dont think that is the place that you think it is.

If you are talking about the spiritual home of Carlton... it's Princes Park... if you are looking for some sort of cottaging hookup, Princess Park might be the place you want to go.

Blueseum is way too under-rated for mine. Just a brilliant sporting site.

Yep, I know all the accolades/accomplishments. But many do not.

In reference to your line I quoted above, I would like to trot out this quote I recently heard attributed to Albert Einstein...

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

And I wasn't aware BF's Bay 13 board was around in Einstein's time.... ;)

If they wanted to go short, they used Bruce... if they wanted the ball in the centre of the ground on a Navy Blue chest, they went with Southby...

Still reckon that Southby should have gotten the gong for full back of the century

I moved to Melbourne in '87 from Qld...my best mate's mum got me into Carlton straight away. I obviously just missed Doull, but all I heard was how good a player this bloke was. Made me want to find out for myself. Some people will do that; they'll educate themselves about their club's history, others are content not knowing, and that's fine, but I'm always more than happy to hear the tales from the old codgers around here (you know who you are)...

Quite a lot of knowledge around these parts actually, it's one of the reasons logging on is usually so enjoyable. So I guess I'm saying, don't be sad, pass on what you know, if they are a true Bagger they'll appreciate it.

I don't think I've ever looked at it before. Looks like as good a way as any to spend the long weekend :thumbsu:.

My work productivity took a MASSIVE nosedive the day I discovered Blueseum. I've wiled away many an afternoon on a 'Blueseum spiral'...

Good luck controlling yourself MrsEddie! Btw, my favourite player page is probably Kouta's. At the bottom, there are also links to an article that details all of his biggest games plus an article which summarises his incredible run of games in 2000.

Darn, don't tell me that! Kouta is one of my ultimate faves, and I've already been unproductive enough at work this week thanks to BigFooty!

This is the extent of my Kouta-tragicness...I used to make my boyfriend at the time eat dinner at the Templestowe Souvlaki Hut every Sunday, just in case Kouta was there. He was, once, but I was so struck that I couldn't speak and I just hit behind my boyfriend and made him order for me.

True story...and this is only gonna make you feel bad...but my brother met him at a charity event my sister-in-law organised and he will tell anyone who listens that Kouta is the best bloke in the history of blokes.

My bro was pretty leathered, went up to the Greek God with some stupid opening along the lines of, 'I just wanted to say thanks for all the great memories' and Kouta ended up chewing his ear off. They were reliving all the games, 95 GF etc, Kouta introduced my bro to his wife, the works. Always take your chances, you never know when they'll come around again!!!

Legend. His knee injury in 2000 still makes me...:(

I just can't do it, I'm too shy. I met SOS when I was about 15 and (shamefully) I burst into tears.
I had to work with a few of the Carlton boys a few weeks ago and for the first half an hour or so I was pretty much dead silent. It wasn't until they started giving each other shit and mucking around that I could relax enough to do my job!

I hope you told them to grow up and focus on their next training session...
