Since Goo has retired ... Would Josh Hunt be a suitable replacement?? .... 1 Year contract, pay him SFA!!

Great idea, unless we already have someone young and talented on our list who's played 20-odd games already and is ready to step straight into Goo's spot.

Just reading that Bailey's Knee's may force him into retirement (as most of us already knew)

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-03/baileys-future-uncertain

Makes getting Longer even more important, hopefully our first round pick or buddy compo pick will be enough to make it happen.

I'm hoping we can front load a few of our contracts this year and make a play for Frawley next year, as it may be Lake final year and Gibbo will be 30+ as well.

Righto Hawks, get Longer. First round pick plus Lowden and Savage and we get their second rounder back as well. Get it done!

Are you serious? Longer is leaving due to a lack of opportunity. He has played 16 games in 2 seasons. No way is he worth that much.

Its unbelievable how much people overate young players. Its like Gilies from Geelong two seasons ago, people were willing to sell the farm to get him, because he was young. Luckily nothing happened, and was delisted the following year.

What kind of medication does it take do cause thoughts like this?

We don't need Hunt, Shaw or Henderson. We have a surplus of quality defenders fighting for a spot. Duryea has shown that he is more than up to the task this year. He might not have Goo's hardness yet but he has also played approx 240 games less than Goo and his left boot is just as good.

We don't need other clubs rejects. We have just won a premiership, we did this by recrutiing to fill a specific need, not by chasing every delisted geriatric that can kick a footy.

Duryea, Suckling, Schoe, Cheney, Litherland, Kelly, Bosely, Wanganeen - Not all of these guys will make it but we have so much defensive depth at the moment that it is the last area we should be trying to fill form outside. At some point we have to put our faith in the kids.

Rant over.

Apparently us and Geelong are frontrunner for Heath Shaw!

"The Giants are also believed to be chasing Collingwood's Heath Shaw, although AFL.com.au understands the Hawks and Cats are the frontrunners for his services."

;) ... Hahaha ... Got to put it out there!! ...

I agree with the age thing ... But when the pressure is on, I am still not convinced about some of the "kids" will be able to handle the pressure.
... You can't buy experience ... and if it is going that cheap, you gotta look at it

We are the frontrunner for a frontrunner.

What are peoples thoughts on acquiring Darren Jolly for 12 months as back up if Max Bailey was to retire and we claim Billy Longer via a trade with Brisbane?

My reasons are the following:
* He would undertake similar role as to Ben Hudson at the Pies this year.
* We would acquire him as a delisted free agent therefore we get him for nothing.
* If Longer becomes tired as the season wears on, we have Jolly's strong body to come in.
* Would be great asset in the finals with his strong body and nous.
* Would be a very cheap option, not demanding big $$$
* Capable of taking on a coaches role with Longer, Grimley, Lowden.

What are peoples thoughts?

Just read that myself and not sure if we really would want him......well just have to trust the club I suppose

Like what you wrote... but i heard he is a bit of a tosser of a bloke and not well liked at the pies...

Will stand corrected by those who know more of course...

Get Longer first then deal with that later. Don't forget we still have Hair Hat Hale that we can put into the ruck, as well as Lowden and Ceglar...

Like your thinking but ideally as a mature rookie. Could play when/ if needed in the spot vacated by long term injury list/Whitey's recovery lasting through most of the year.
Low risk, high reward proposition for mine....

Why

Why would we want Shaw? We have duryea and cheney to come in for Goo. Shaw is a banana anyway, wouldn't fit into our team. There is no pies players I would want except pendles, which ain't happening.

So Sylvia is going to Fremantle. They are getting pretty scary that Freo team.

I think we need another Gun midfielder to compete with Freo next year. With Sewell declining... we need another star to come through.

I'm against it, don't think his Knees are in the best condition. Wasn't the most popular guy at Collingwood, hence why he has been de-listeded. If Bailey was to retire, we still have Hale, Longer (if we get him) Lowden, Ceglar and Grimley so I think we have enough to cover it.

We already have a pretty ruck coach in Monkhorst as well.

Much rather a spot on the list to go to a young midfielder.

Sylvia over to Fremantle has just increased our chances of beating the Dockers next year. ;)

Worst part is that Shaw would require a trade. If he was a unrestricted free agent I wouldn't mind but having to trade could jeopardise our other trade targets like Billy Longer.

Mate I wouldn't want him if he came for free. He would spoil our structure. He is an idiot, did you see the free kicks he gave away against Port in the finals? Enough said.

I actually think Sylvia would fit well into a top team with a shot at the flag i.e. Freo, hawks, cats. He has been surrounded by flogs for so long his performance has dropped. If he goes to Freo we will see him thrive IMO.

I just don't see how Heath Shaw has so much currency. The reason Collingwood is getting rid of him is due to his attitude, not his footballing ability. Why would we want someone like that, especially when we have to trade for him?

I certainly think it would be worth a look. He could just be used as an insurance policy.

Getting tired of every single player being linked to the hawks.

Hawthorn only targets players to fill a need on the list.

Hawks have a lot of backman outside of the 22, so dont see them trying to go out and get a replacement for Goo

The biggest need now, from my point of view would be talls. With Buddy gone, Bailey no certainty to continue, good quality talls would what I would be chasing (Longer).

All those suggest Grimely, Lowden, O'brien ect need to see that generally tall fwds that are any good (buddy, nRoo & jroo, Pav, Rough, kennedy) are high draft picks or F/s (cloke, daniher, hawkins, brown,)

So although these may be good players, they wont be great and the only way for the Hawks to get their hand on talent like this would be to trade or bottom out again

Also I would like to see savage moved on as it may allow the hawks to move higher up in the draft pecking order
