Interesting that the folk who screeched Juliar for three years are now standing back and saying nothing as the current government lies through it's teeth about the current asylum farce.

So it's been confirmed that the Navy shot on the boat ?

You're comfortable with the deceit and secrecy that surrounds this policy? You believe Morrison when he says the RAN "didn't know" they were in Indonesian territorial water? Because if that is the case either he is lying or the captain of the ship is utterly incompetent.

Entirely possible. As I said I just hope to christ it's not true, because it would represent some sort of nadir for an issue that is already scraping the bottom of the barrell.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/20807659/navy-can-fire-to-turn-back-boats/

The Royal Australian Navy has been authorised to fire over the bows of asylum-seeker boats as part of "escalation of force" measures to turn back boats to Indonesia.

operational matters..... we will never be told if/when we do this.

I'm comfortable that the policy so far is working and trust the navy.

Were you outraged when the Australian navy sailed into Indonesia's waters to rescue boats within miles of the Indonesian coast after being radioed by asylum seekers ? Why the issue now with Australian boats entering Indonesian territorial waters ?

Liked this from today's Lenore Taylor column:

Morrison’s Lt Gen Angus Campbell confirmed the lifeboats had been bought, but he and Morrison won’t confirm widespread reports they bought 16 or how many they have left. This is apparently so people smugglers won’t know when the navy has run out, unless of course they can read, and count.

There's a difference between rescuing stricken vessels in other countries territorial waters and conducting military operations.

I think Morrison is handling the media approriately when it comes to sovereign borders.

When something significantly serious occurs he holds a press conference. When the media reports claims from asylum seekers he dead bats the issue with a written statement. It actually adds credibility to his position in both cases.

I'd much rather a Minister spend their time thinking and doing rather than responding to every media whisper.

Embracing the new media may have seemed like a good idea when Labor came into power in 2007 but eventuall the need to continually respond in person to every 5 minute media frenzy was a part of their downfall. To often the ALP got caught out appearing to be (and sometimes genuinely being) hypocrits or over-reachingon an issue. Part of the reason for this is that they didn't take the time to review past statements or to think longer term about their response.

While I think Morrison has handled the media in a ridiculous way, there is an element of truth in this.

Labor's eagerness to control and dominate the media cycle led to much of their undoing.

Its Singapore, not Greenland..... they can just order some more or from different manufacturers.

I don't understand. Morrison has been very confident in the media. Weekly briefings when boats arrived and relevant information provided. I can understand them not wanting to reveal too much info, as it would be used by people smugglers.

Now there are no boats, what's the point of weekly briefings ?

Let's say that an military/customs vessel becomes aware of a boat with asylum seekers in Indonesian waters that has been sabotaged by those on board. Given the international responsibilities combined with the elected Government's policy commitments I see nothing wrong with the military vessell entering Indonesian waters for the purposes of rescue, returning to international waters for the purposes of assessing the health and well being of the asylum seekers, and then returning to indonesian for the purposes of putting the asylum seekers onto a seaworthy vessel and directing them to sail away from Australia.

There are no boats? Did we breach Indonesia's sovereign borders chasing ghost ships?

So far the media strategy has succeeded brilliantly.

Firstly, the previous government always announced the arrival of a new boat, which Navy ship had intercepted it and was escorting into Christmas Island, how many arrivals on board and sometimes their nationality. These were always press releases.

Now the media rarely reported these arrivals, if they did tended to bury the story.

But Morrison's team obviously realised that the reverse would happen once coalition was in govt - ie the media would beat up every arrivals as a "failure"" for Tony Abbott.

So very neatly they stop the instant announcements and instead they announce them all in one go every Friday - and then only minimum information, restricted to the numbers.

Secondly, they institute media briefings every Friday, where Campbell appears with Morrison.

By contrast the previous govt only every held media conferences if some stuff up had occurred - ie when forced into it.

But by appearing at weekly conference people got used seeing an Army General alongside the minister.
And most of all General Campbell was able to set expectations for future operations - ie he would never comment on sea (read turnback/towback) operations. This was really effective because when they started the turnbacks in December nobody found out about them for weeks.

And then, being Christmas, they had the perfect excuse to suspend the weekly media conferences during the break - and now all they're forced into having is äs needed" press conferences.

Meanwhile - all the operational detail of how many arrivals and so on will be issued in a press release - just like Labor used to do.

Nifty.
