Looking into the long term future - there will be a time when the Dees, Saints, North and the Dogs will be turned into one power-house Victorian club.

Dare I say it, it will be good for the game.

As long as you don't follow those clubs, in which case a big chunk simply won't follow it at all. I certainly wouldn't if it happened to Geelong (I'm halfway there already).

It's generational - but these teams won't have the followers anyway, especially if the standard of footy served up so far this year continues. More people went to the soccer yesterday than the Dogs/Kangas game. That trend continues, then we'll probably see Channel Nine pick up the rights and bring it back to a winter sport to go head-to-head.

I think we may be close to the tipping point where there's just too many AFL players, thus diluting the quality. Plus, the expansion clubs have pretty much killed off any chance that these clubs will have for success in the next 10 years.

If I gave the impression Roos would not have been miffed to the max, then I didn't get the message across clearly enough. Of course he would have been.

My recollection is the conversation began after a post of yours along the lines he would regret his decision to take the job. My view didn't accord with that. Reckon he'd be from the "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" school and would relish the challenge. Based on the way he played and the way he has coached hitherto.

Also think there's been a bit of an overreaction to one absolute shocker. They could easily (arguably should have) beaten the Saints with an undermanned, then injury affected, team.

They don't run deep talent wise and when you don't have available any of your forward talls, a key back half, key extractor and most experienced ruckman, writing them off as a rabble on the basis of one shocker so early in the year (as a few have) is a very early call in my view.

I see they're taking that idea and running with it in Auskick this year. Something about putting the emphasis on participation rather than competition. Don't mind it myself - if kids are in a team who are getting thumped week after week, they'll soon lose interest in it.

that may be all well and good in theory, but in reality even a 10y.o knows when his side is being pumped by 10 goals.

A ten year old playing soccer knows when the ball has gone in their net 4 times and ours once. Not having the score displayed or recorded, imo for most kids will do stuff all. How stupid do you think these kids are?

I reckon he'll be from the "when the going gets tough, take the money and run" school. He'll last a couple of years, maybe three. Then he'll go back to On the Couch or something similar, and will be universally excused from Melbourne's continual crapness because he doesn't have the players. Same results as Neeld with the opposite reaction.

He's only signed up for two years and said explicitly at the outset that he was only taking the job for that long because his chief interest is in rebuilding the football department for the long term. So yeah, I'd think your prediction is spot on.

BTW the 'Neeld didn't have the cattle' argument is total rubbish. They got dramatically worse under him - they won 8 games in 2011 under Bailey and then 4 in Neeld's first year and 2 the year after that. He also made the list demonstrably worse than when he inherited it. Absolute architect of his own demise.

When Cale Morton lobbed at the Eagles and reported that he'd never done pre-season training at anything like the intensity they were going at over there, I couldn't say I was surprised to hear it.

Just don't seem prepared to do the hard work. And they're killing off a whole bunch of outrageously high draft picks with what could only be perceived as a very lax 'culture' at the club.

The master coach is now the boy with the barrow.

Just don't seem prepared to do the hard work. And they're killing off a whole bunch of outrageously high draft picks with what could only be perceived as a very lax 'culture' at the club.

He could also be at the point of his career where he logs onto Westpac or whoever at 3pm and says "yep, my pay has gone in". Tick.

Before Neeld came you mean? Wouldnt think so, given the record thumping from us was while Bailey was coach. Something has gone horribly wrong in their development system, thats for sure. Nobody had all that many complaints about their drafting of the likes of Watts, Trengrove and Scully at the time but those players just havent come on at all.
