A hypothetical:

Lets say he doesn't sign on and someone has been building a war chest and come at him with a godfather offer. They frontload it so its a massive amount in the first year, say 2 million or more.

Would we be in a position to match those terms and force a trade for fair compensation, or would we have to submit due to insufficient liquidity after tying down Tex, Sloane etc? To me it seems like it would be hard to defend against a well constructed FA raid planned from a long way out and spearheaded by massive frontloading.
We just have to match the dollars/years of the offer, not how it's structured.

Seriously? I thought we had to meet the specific terms as well?? If otherwise, that makes the entire hypothetical redundant
Terms have to be matched when coming through the ND/PSD but I'm not 100% if that's true for free agency.

I'd think it was, if the AFL is consistent, which we know they aren't.

One thing is that I hope we are offering solid years and not taking a softly softly approach trying to keep it to 3 years or whatever. Geelong will be offering 5 minimum. Seems to be the trend with them to offer long term security e.g. Taylor and Selwood

Yeah but this will be the headline in october 'Aish has selected Port Adelaide as his club of choice he would like to be traded to"

Seems a pretty likely headline in "Illiterate Troll Weekly". I take it you still have a column?

I thought we had to match structure too
Just have to match the total base payments:

"For salary cap purposes, actual payments made to players by either club (being new or existing) may be allocated evenly over the contract length. For example, if a player is offered a three-year deal for base payments of $400,000, $100,000 and $100,000, and ASA payments of $40,000, $10,000, $10,000, the club that matches these payments may allocate $200,000 per year under the TPP limit and $20,000 per year under the ASA limit."

You're managing to take the glass half empty approach to terrifying extremes with that attitude.

Good news. Thanks for the research.

BTW, I had lunch with Patty Dangerfield today. Yes I did, indeed i did.

I didn't get around to grilling him about whether he was going to re-sign, because he was sitting inside the cafe, and I was sitting outside.

So you shared a moment with Jimmy Barnes too.

What was Patty doing at McDonalds and did he glare at you as you stared at him from your car in the drive thru lane?

But have you heard that we need to deliver him one from anyone of note? Or are you reading the Advertiser?

Have you heard Dangerfield ever say that he doesn't want to be part of bringing the next premiership to Adelaide?

And as far as "mean a lot to the city" ... we should be rooting for Western Bulldogs / St Kilda / Melbourne / Richmond, god knows it would mean as much to their supporters as any.

Agreed. I just said I was sick of hearing it, and I seem to hear it a lot. Certainly not a Badvertiser reader. Did I just invent 'Badvertiser'? Probably not.

I was likely reacting to ""We'll get the contract right, we'll pay [Dangerfield] what he needs to be paid, but we've got to get the culture, environment and everything right so that he can win a premiership, because he wants to win one," Ricciuto said." posted further up the page. No idea how accurate that quote is.

The city of Melbourne has plenty of premierships.

I take it you haven't lived in Melbourne? Imagine having multiple Port Adelaides to hate ... they don't consider themselves one big happy group of teams competing against the non-Vics :-)

Not many non-Hawks supporters would be happy with the last few years in Melbourne.

Most players the last year of their contact have a boomer of a year.. So we should be guaranteed that. And if after round 5 he still hasn't decided he wants to stay, catch you later Danger!
If he tables big offers let him go.. Take the draft pick compensation and hand that to Brisbane and grab Aish for half the money.. If we pay Danger drug money to keep him it will ruin the culture of our club.. I want Danger to want to stay but not at the cost of the club..

+1. Although Gibbs took his time at the Blues and resigned in around July I think from what I read?

Definitely dont want a Tippett 2 scenario happening either.

Protective boxes aren't designed for sports like Aussie Rules, they are designed for sports with much less running like Cricket and baseball. When you have been playing football for almost 20 years and have never had to wear a box and suddenly have to wear one, it would be distracting and uncomfortable to say the least.

Actually he ended up wearing the ones that are used in martial arts. Having used one for years they are very comfortable and easy to move around, ie twist, turn and run. Having the uncanny ability to receive a kick/year in that area, they are worth their weight in gold lol.:p

What IMO probably affected Douglas more in 2014 was the psychological impact of having your balls ripped open. (Ie scrotum).

Is that actually what happened?:eek::eek:

I would never want to step back on the field if that happened to me.
