Whilst I think Douglas was great in 2011 (?) and 2013, I can't help but think his disappointing season this year being blamed on the groin injury early on is a bit of a cop out. Like no doubt it would have slowed him down early on but he was average for the majority of the season and the injury would have well and truly healed by then. He also trained for the majority of the pre season, getting in a pre season game where he received his painful injury. He was back in the side come round 2 so it's not as if he missed a major amount of time on the sidelines.

Like everyone, I hope he bounces back this year, I just think people are too quick to blame his average season on an injury rather then the player/system.

Do you know the full extent of the "injury"???

Do you know exactly how long he had to wear the cricket/martial arts box for during the season??

Do you know for sure that having to wear it didn't impact his form??

Whilst the site of the injury may have healed do you know the full effect of it on the players psyche???

It also makes it more a question of wether he should have been traded last year. When people crap on about how it wasnt such a risk not to trade him because we could match the offer or send him to the draft they just have their hand on it.

You can't trade a player who doesn't want to be traded, and trying to force a player who is in the leadership group and well liked by the playing group, into a trade, is poison for club culture.

I could ask those exact same questions the other way around and you'd know as many of those answers as I would.

What I do know is he was playing footy from round 2 onwards, no doubt you'd expect him to start a little slow as it did seem like he was 'rushed' back but after a couple of months I'd assume that would be well and truly healed (or he wouldn't have played to begin with) yet his form didn't really change as the season went on.

I'm not going to discount it may have played some part in his disappointing season but everyone seems pretty conformable in blaming that alone for his average season.

I think we all know what the injury was and I think most of us would take another serious injury over that but you only have to look at how quick he returned (he missed 3 odd weeks? 1 home and away game). As I just said above, you'd let him off if he started slow and finished the year strong, putting it down to the injury but his was average the entire season and it's something I don't think can be single-handedly blamed on the injury.

Protective boxes aren't designed for sports like Aussie Rules, they are designed for sports with much less running like Cricket and baseball. When you have been playing football for almost 20 years and have never had to wear a box and suddenly have to wear one, it would be distracting and uncomfortable to say the least.

He has never said he wanted to stay. He's been very careful with his choice of words when talking about his future. I'm not saying he'll go, but he certainly hasn't indicated one way or the other.

Was thinking this exact thing myself.

One of those under the radar midfielders that never receive the attention they should, but are hard working and will cut you to pieces if you're not careful. We saw this in 2013 definitely. These players are integral to sides that want to go deep in September. Need those experienced and talented campaigners.

I remember in Tyson Edwards last year he was having an average year and I jumped on his back about it and was one of the people calling for him to be dropped for good. Then the story came out about him having testicular cancer and having a nut removed and I felt like shit, and I then wondered how the hell he even got to training under those conditions. Im gonna give Dougy the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Except a heavily front loaded contract may have tax implications which mean less in the pocket than a smooth distribution of funds.
