I believe he's then bound to the Crows, and can only move via trade, not RFA.
Having a deal off the books is very high risk - neither party could enforce it, and the consequences if it's discovered are likely to be diabolos - just ask Adelaide and Tippet.
PS, I'm not even sure if trade would then be an option, I can't remember when RFA first refusals are settled in relation to Trade Week?

Just to clarify.. if they match our offer , is that the contract he must sign. We offer 6 years , they match but in the end he only wants two more years at the Crows

Couldn't we sign him for a two year deal, then extend his contract after say 2 games next year by another 2-3 years?

We could do that, as far as I know, but (a) it would spark a heavy duty AFL investigation, and (b) we would not then be able to take advantage of the salary cap averaging provisions, which is our best weapon in the contract negotiations, because we are going to have more TPP room after 2016 than (I assume) Adelaide.
I'm not an expert on it, and blokes at the club will be all over the possibilities, and will have been for at least the last couple of years.

of course we could but that is a big risk of him earning squillions from us and then moving on to someone else in 2 years as a full FA

Not sure we know enough of the variables to know for sure Fred that SCA is of benefit to us, as it works in both directions and the further away you get into the future the great effect it has on both clubs ability to offer silly amounts of money to get/keep him.

Its more like the the opposite strategy will work as the more short term the contract the more Adelaides hands are tied.

on a... why , its not different than what the Pies did with Ball. He nominated a huge amount then averaged it with a longer contract.

Ball wasn't FA,.

Yes , he nominated a contract amount predraft...so any club picking him would have to meet the conditions of contract. It was 2 years at a very high amount. Post draft , the Pies extended the contract length. Collusion? An Understanding?

Cannot believe there is now 75 pages on this thread.

Just cannot see him coming unless something really goes wrong at the Crows this year.

Yes he would be ideal to get given our midfield is still the main issue holding us back but from what I know of the family - he is a loyal person. Just do not see him leaving the Crows.

I think we are all playing a little bit of blind mans , pin the tail on the donkey , it has never been matched but...

Adelaide has to have room in their cap before any ability to match the offer is legal. If the do match...it comes back to a normal trade situation , except if deal can not be done the player has a deal. So ..any pretend match could be quite dangerous , if they match not really wanting to pay that but commit to it... my guess is the trade would suddenly been worth less than a normal trade.

But for this reason , my guess is Geelong will offer a 2 year deal on a huge amount. If they keep him for the next two years on huge money , they then face two years of Unrestricted FA speculation. After last year and this year , the may not be that keen on it. Yes if they matched they may get more than the comp but I doubt it will be the same as if they had traded him this year.
Will only face the two years UFA speculation if the rules change wont we? Currently the ten years all have to be served at one club

So he'd have to wait another 5 years to be a rfa again?
As the rules stand atm he'd have to wait another 8 years to become a RFA again at his new club. Basically if you switch clubs you start from scratch again. However the AFLPA are pushing for a rule to be introduced which would allow a player to move as a FA after 4 years at his second club. They're also pushing for the time of service to be reduced from 8 years to 6 for a RFA and from 10 to 8 for an UFA. Does that explain things? :D

It does, I had no idea it reset. I learned me sumptin today.

Just a hypothetical so I can understand, but on the Crows board they say if we make an offer and Crows can match it, it will force a trade. (of course in reality we're making a huge offer that Crow won't match)

What happens if the Cats then go "no thanks". Does that mean Crows have to pay Danger what they matched us with?

For example:

-Geelong offers $1 million for 5 years
-Crows match the offer in a bid to force us to trade
-Geelong say no trade and reneg the offer
-Crows now have to pay Danger $1 million a year

Its the players call then.if adelaide can match they have to pay him the amount geel bid (that they matched) they cant make it lower.

This is if he agrees to stay.if he doesnt then he can seek a trade or enter the nd/psd as with any other player.

People are in for a surprise if they think we won't be paying overs. It's a significant deal that is currently on the table, and this is so the Crows are unable to match.

Do you know something we don't SoG?
Apparently SOG has spoken to Balme (before he left the Cats) who has told him that Danger has already agreed to terms to come to Geelong at the end of 2015.

Son of God is willing to shout a couple of meet-up regulars a night on the piss if Danger doesn't play for Geelong and stays in Adelaide in 2016. I'd hope for his wallet's sake that he knows more than us!

I am not sure why I should not believe that some of the big Melbourne based clubs do not have significant offers on the table. And maybe there are more significant offers than what Geelong have produced.

You're missing one vital point though. Those other teams are irrelevant in discussions because he doesn't want to go to anyone other than Geelong. Besides that, you'd be surprised at the actual figure that has been mooted.

It's well over a mil for the first season.

Now of course there's a chance Adelaide may well convince him to stay, (it'd be naive to suggest they can't) but as it stands, he has his heart firmly set on his home town.

Like I've said previously, I'm not worried at all in being left with egg on my face again, I'm merely the messenger and I think you all deserve to know what I've been told.

I've also heard from several others with sources, words of similar effect, so I'll remain quite confident he'll be in Geelong colours in 2016.

If somehow it doesn't eventuate, don't shoot me.

The same kind of message is buried in the 92 page danger thread on the crows board from several respected posters over there.

Till it's done, it's all speculation. It is funny that it's the same speculation however.

And Sog did put his $$ where his rumour is..

Go Catters

You might be crucified though. :D
