I think Dougy not signing is the clue to all our list management tactics at the moment. He wouldn't have the same offers on the table as the big 2, so why is he not signed?

The only conclusion, in my opinion, is that the club are on the hunt and need room to move. Signing terms now would inhibit their ability to do so.
Interesting theory, you could certainly read something into the last quote on here:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-02-26/crows-wont-panic-on-danger

Now which SA boys are out of contract in the next year or two...

I was sure someone on here recently said we haven't started talking to him.
we haven't tabled an offer or started negotiations.

It would be naive to think we haven been talking to him/his manager at all. Dialogue with them can just mean seeing where they are at in wanting to start negotiations/telling them when we want to start etc. Thats how I see it, we are keeping each other informed on our current position relating to when we want to start getting serious about contract discussions

The 2 pieces of info dont necessarily contradict each other if you look at it that way

Its all pretty simple really - play finals in 2015, Dangerfield will stay.
If we don't play finals this year, he will go to Geelong.
If we don't play finals, we will be finishing below Geelong, in which case FA compensation will be better than Geelong's first rounder.
First rounders are great, but can be a gamble. Use one to bring home out of contract, proven talent.

what if we don't make finals and Geelong don't either and they finish lower than us?

I think your right. I feel that the club would even be prepared to loose Douglas to keep Walker, Sloane and Dangerfield. Unfortunately.
now don't get me wrong, Dougy is a great bloke and I like having him at the club, but he is ABSOLUTELY in the expendables category if it were to come to that.

Would anyone really want him? He's a serviceable midfielder now. Not going to win you games off his own boot. A good, sound player. Interesting to see if he holds out for any offers. Will clubs make a play for him?

Is he a free agent. If so to the right team he would be a great pick up.

plenty of room in the competition for serviceable midfielders

The players are having way too much say over the running of the competition. The AFLPA is starting to become too powerful in my opinion.
When will clubs push back and argue for the right to trade contracted players against their will?

A nice break with our usual method of signing up all the expendable players first then trying to keep all the guns at the last minute with what's leftover

Very soon.
So we'll lose Dangerfield just before FA gets overhauled in terms of a club's right to trade contracted players but after they do away with free agency compensation!
