If we don't make the 8 I'd like to get our 1st round pick whatever it would ne and trade it for a key position kid from another club. The Giants are full of them, a 1st round pick would get a decent key position kid who's been in the system for 2/3 years. Surely we can pry one from somewhere.

Don't forget we would have picked Impey at 14 apparently, so even if we held onto it we would still be having this debate.
Possibly, all clubs say they love who they picked and couldn't believe they were still available.

It could quite easily be also the club thought McCarthy would be gone by 14 anyway, but Impey would be available when we got him, so there was no risk involved. If that was their thinking there is no way in hell they are going to retrospectively say they thought he'd be gone and they'd do it differently if they could do it over.

If a first round pick could be traded for a kpf without too much trouble , then 18 teams could all trade for kpfs every year, and no one would ever be saying , hey , let's trade in a good key forward.

Instead people are saying , hey , do you remember when the dogs paid 8million for that young key forward they traded pick 6 and a gun mid for?

I understand that, I know how the game works in that regard. But the Giants are there for at least the attempt to get one of the plethora of key position talls they have. We have to be aggressive to get one that fills that gaping hole in our list.

Cameron , Patton and McCarthy . McCarthy would be fielding offers from freo like tom Boyd , 5 years with 800 000 - 1000 000 dollars. Cameron is being chased by every club will million dollar offers. Patton same and he can't even get on the park any more than butcher can and he would still cost us wines to bring him into the club.

Cameron is already stitched up by GWS long term. Think Patton isn't that far of resuming one to watch next year maybe if he's out of contract but can really imagine GWS looking an attractive destination from next year on.

18yo NT wingman/small forward Davin Ferreira had an impressive first up game for Norwood. Kicked 3 goals and collected 18 touches. Only 177cm I think the commentators said but not a mosquito build and attacked the contests hard.

Listed at 75 kilos.
A quick look at his bio

: Davin is a small forward or wingman from Rostrevor College who asked if he could come and try out during the 2015 pre-season. Elusive and quick, Davin has some excellent skills and given his approach to the pre-season he will be given time to develop by our coaching staff.

Not sure we are going to start a s*** fight for liking the sound of a player under 180 cm but would like to know more about him. A little cyber stalking is via NT Wanderers and a couple of years ago use to dream of playing for the Suns

Kane Mitchell is a better player than Steve Summerton.

Agree. I love Summo, but I can imagine the criticism of his 35m loopy 9 irons at AFL level.

Well Schache (pronounced Shacky if anyone's wondering) dominated against SA yesterday - 5 goals. Very strong overhead, great when the ball hits the deck and also very adept on the lead.

He'll go top 3 though - so we're not gonna get him.

I still think Ryan Burton is our best option. We have Dougal, Harvey and Shaw developing in the twos. They're all 196cm+ (with Dougal and Shaw being 199cm). Burton will be 191cm - 192cm (if he grows a cm by the end of the year), can play as a tall or a medium forward and likely the only reason we'll have a chance at him with our pick is because he's coming back from a broken leg (a similar reason why Jake Stringer didn't go pick 1/2 in 2012).

I just think he fits into the forward line we're developing for the future.

Plus after looking at Billy on Saturday, he looks like he's got some forward nous as well. Put a bit of muscle on him and he'll be holding on to some nice contested grabs.

Another taller option is Harry McKay from Vic Country. Sort of looks and moves like an even bigger Tom Bell (he's 200cm). Not an amazing mark unfortunately, but good size and presence. Should be around our second, or maybe even third pick.

Yeah I'm a fan of taking burton. A risk with his leg injury but if our medicos don't see any reason for concern then take him and see what happens. Only way we are gonna get a look at a rated forward prospect.

Also agree we should be looking to develop two good forwards and burton would work well with another big guy

This is a bit off the general discussion, but to me it is important in determining just what sort of player we bring onto our list.
I've been searching for a single number that helps to define the height and weight characteristics of successful premiership teams.
One thing is to look at the median height and weight of the actual premiership teams fielded and compare it to our current team.
The median is the "middle value" of the actual playing groups for both height and weight of the actual teams fielded (20 or 22 players) - not the team squads.
In fact I've looked at the team we fielded against the Cats on Saturday,as well as the Cats team, and examined those 2 teams against 15 premiership teams from over the years.
That's fine but to me some things get hidden, possibly obscuring other detail. For example a taller team will almost certainly be a heavier team if you look at the 2 sets of height and weight data without trying to merge the data somehow.
So I started mucking around by dividing the median weight by the median weight = [median weight/median height].
That tells you something about how weight changes for every unit increase in height at the centre of the distributions.
That value has been plotted in the graph below as a function of the premiership years I examined - and for Port vs Cats Rd 11 2015.
Players could be more "blubbery per unit height" and the value could be high. That might be the case in some of the 80's and early 90's premiership years when training and fitness were less intensive. That sort of fits the data below.
Or muscle mass might be higher per unit height increase giving higher values, as well.
Alternatively if the training regimen has created sinewy, string beans then the weight increase per unit height will be low.
If you look at the plot there is a broad relationship in the way the premiership teams present themselves, with a general tendency for lower values as the years progress. I suggest leaner athletes have developed over the years. I've drawn a straight line through the premiership team data (red dots), but there is every possibility that this quotient might level out to give the "optimised premiership player" The Cats Rd11 2015 team seems to fit the behaviour of the premiership teams.

But the Port Rd11 2015 team is, well - odd. It does not seem to fit the stature of typical premiership teams - lower than it should be.

It's not a big difference, probably of the order of 5% lower, but at the elite level "1%ers" may be important.
Our recruiting and training needs to perhaps give some consideration to this.

What are the chances we will have a token Maggies rookie listed player next year like we have had for the past 3 years?

Here is our track record
2012 - Justin Hoskin (Didn't look close to playing a game and is now at Centrals)
2013 - Sam Gray (11 games and 7 goals in 1 1/2 seasons, still on the list and is much maligned by supporters for not being AFL standard)
2014 - Nathan Krakouer (7 games playing in the back pocket out of a possible 11, Being on the rookie list has stopped him from playing every game, But has done a great job and so far is well worth the small risk)
2015 - ?

IF (and that's a big if) we choose to go down this path I think we have 3 or 4 decent options.

Steve Summerton - Clearly our best SANFL player and always outshines half our AFL list in the process. But is 27 years old and should be kept on as Maggies captain.

Louis Sharrad - The 21 year old is having a real breakout year as a big bodied mid and is averaging almost 20 possessions at SANFL level playing a 2nd string midfielder to A.Young, Moore, Arch etc, Just about bang on the same height and weight as Travis Boak. Some liken him to a midfielders version of Dustin Fletcher by the way he moves around and disposes of the ball.

Robbie Young - The 20 year old goal sneak (Averages about a goal a game at SANFL level playing as the 2nd small forward option to Neade) is a bit of an outside chance due to his size(175cm, 60kg) but I think he has real upside and could be a mature age recruit down the line for perhaps another club if not us.

Sidney Masters - The 19 year old is already a real reliable defender at SANFL level and has a great disposal of the ball, Already 87kg and has about the same height as Tom Jonas. Question marks over if he can play on smalls or not but if he ends up being an AFL standard defender in the future, 3rd tall forwards and medium sized forwards look to be his best match-ups.

We have a genuine need for the player we want Sam Gray and Jake Neade to be that would be Robbie Young as a project didn't realize that he was that light. As a project player maybe is the most likely to find a spot in our side if he makes it. Louis and Sidney could improve to afl standard and not ever get a game.

I feel our premiership window is open.

Given talls generally take 3-5 years to develop, why look to the national draft for our immediate needs? Surely we should be knocking on the door of the GC, GWS etc looking for our best fit?

George Hewett is supposed to be having a great season for Sydney's reserves. He's is a classy inside mid who is racking up possessions. Hewett is out of contract at the end of the year and hasn't played in the league team. Sydney has massive depth for inside mids and they have trade restrictions on them based on cola being phased out. Maybe he is homesick!
He was a Port supporter also.

Not sure this is true - although I agree the club has said it a few times.
The father of a young guy that went ahead of our pick was under the impression we would take him if he was still around. (I have no reason to doubt him, although I guess priorities change over time)

I agree, this has been the strategy utilised by the Hawks, Geelong, Sydney, West Coast and ourselves (Schulz and Ryder). The issue is that we have 3 talls we want to play forward in Schulz, Ryder and Westhoff and these three are all here for at least one more year. If we were to trade for a Hawkins/Dixon/Day/Lycett/Other KPF that is often mentioned, where do they play? Would we drop Lobbe and play Ryder permanently in the ruck? Would we push Schulz into retirement? Does Westhoff go to a wing? I am not saying we shouldn't and very much agree with your sentiment, just questioning how this would work for our current list.

If Sam skinner slips to the rookie draft we should dive on him. 197cm defender forward from vic country who did his acl at the start of champs.

He is rated fairly highly. Not sure he will get all the way to the rookie draft. Maybe able to snare him with a second round pick due to his injury.

His bio from Mad Monday website: Skinner a boy from Moe in the Gippsland region is a key defender who has a good balance of attack and playing lockdown in his defensive role. Apart of Vic Countries U16 Championship winning side in 2013 where he was also named MVP for Vic Country, Sam has a strong competitive and aggressive mentality to the game that allows him to beat his opponent 1 on 1. Member of the AIS/AFL academy in 2014 look for Sam to play a key defensive post for Gippsland with the chance to play a few games for Vic Country at this years U18 Championships.
