What is required to be a top side in the AFL is high levels of revenue and the resultant profits.
This allows the club to spend on facilities and the like that the AFL funds distribution will not cover.

I get that pokies can be socially damaging but I cant imagine the HFC will ever walk away from them while they remain legal.
That said, there are plenty of things that are legal and are socially damaging.

Hawthorn and 5 other clubs are considering I think , to give gambling the bullet , I am not sure in what way, I don't gamble on humans at all, even when they are involved in animal racing , its always open to the rort! I see the adds on Fox footy for it all the time, and I see the grey rules of AFL lending itself to one day having an umpire compromised by heavy duty cheating, watch , it'll happen unless a very strict set of guidelines is enforced by the law not by the AFL.

Gambling is in its worst form, is an illness like alcoholism and drug addiction, yet its treated like some fun time money gathering party.

Its not , adds showing blokes pulling money out of gambling machines and throwing it back to the bar or on another bet with a big grin is just sick.

And it is not reality.Having gambling in sport where some people are addicted to the punt, and other aren't , is no different to the AFL having a corner set aside in each of the grounds in some little back room where a patron can go and hit up , although addicts are everywhere when it comes to drugs so the room might have to be bigger.

No different having idiotic "winning" commercials and telephone betting advertised over and over and over on the Foxtel while people are watching a game!

Forget about the sneaky little conditions advertised in betting to get your money back if something agreed to happens in a game, thats a trap, and its no different to free booze in the casino, its why gambling is a disease inside the clubs in the AFL, have a look at how many players have been or are in gambling trouble.

No more adds , if you have to have a bet, drive or walk to the TAB, forget telephone gambling, its all bad news from there.

You small time 5 and 10 buck gamblers , you don't need to worry , but there's not many of you hey? And you may join the ranks of the disembowelled by gambling, when you run out of luck!

Would rather they stop selling home games at the MCG against Freo and Eagles to Northern Antarctica also called Tasmania.

Obviously with the most members in the competition, multiple flags and money to burn the Hawks don't need to sell so many games to Tasmania.

If the AFL is real about equalisation they will cease sending WA teams to Tasmania. Adds another 2 - 3 hours on the the trip both ways and it takes games at the MCG away from teams who want to play there and get experience at the venue.

But then the AFL has always been about money and ratings............not equalisation.

The pokie do-gooders really annoy me. There is much more money lost on the racing industries (3 codes) If people choose to gamble that is their business.

If they chose to be irresponsible about their gambling that is also their business/responsibility......and don't tell me it is an illness. It is an excuse for lack of control and being weak.

I like the pokies and I love the horse racing. I don't ever bet on the horses, that side of it has never interested me, but I have seen first hand what being irresponsible can do. My grandfather lost our family money betting on the horses. It hasn't stopped the next generations loving the horses, but it did teach a big lesson about the gambling side of it.

agreed. we understand that certain things are addictive but it's like if a pregnant woman is seen smoking.. are we outraged at the 7/11 that sold her the smokes or are we outraged at her sheer lack of responsibility for the welfare of her child? of course it's the latter. unless we're talking about a chemcial, physiological addiction like heroin/methamphetamine, then addiction is simply a lack of mental discipline.

Equalisation, hah? no such thing, but its got nothing to do with your WA clubs having to go to Tassie.

Simple . We won the prelim at Subi, we won the grand final at the MCG.We had travelled in the last four weeks to Perth three times. No whinging. We won two of those, the first Eagle H and A, THEN WE LOST A FINAL, THEN WE WON A FINAL , AND ANOTHER A WEEK LATEr WE WON AGAINAs you know!

Tasmania was a great thing for Hawthorn financially, as well as for Tassie football fans. Kennett was no political friend of mine but a ripper president!

So stop whinging about going there, you and Fremantle play at the biggest home ground advantage oval in the league, perhaps more so than Port and Crows at Adelaide Oval. And you damn well play half your year on that home ground, every season. What,s that, about 11 games?

Hawthorn has always been a family club and it is not a false pretence , that it is promoted as such. And I have known Hawthorn for nearly 6 decades.

People who don't understand the standards and the feeling at Hawthorn perhaps should have a look at it much more closely, and see that is why success seems always close by , and our club is very tight and close , your coach WCE, may teach you a bit of that.

Nope its about gambling being the ruination of sports played by humans, that's all its about , nothing to do with Hawthorn's family , your family or my family its about bleeding gambling. Watch it kill Aussie footy.

my argument is let's stop with all the bullshit.

the hawks aren't a family club any more than carlton, GWS, west caost or port adelaide. but equally so the hawks are not responsible or even contributing to the level of gambling in society. all they're doing is positioning themselves to profit off something that is occurring regardless. it's a smart strategy and there's nothing wrong with that. i don't understand why everyone has to take such an extreme view one way or the other (either the hawks are the ultimate family club vs hawks are responsible for decay of societal values) because neither are true.
