As someone who grew up with strict folks I think this explains a lot of it. If they aren't flat out not letting him go then chances are they're grilling him and putting on shitload of restrictions to the point he can barely enjoy himself, at least this was my experience for a while. Shitty excuses are just par for the course in this case because it's a bit lame to keep saying "I can't come out because my folks are in a shitty mood"

Have to precook at home.

Made a nice cake our of expensive almond meal.

Want to convert into a layer cake.

Decided to slice cake into two and it was still very gooey inside and one layer is super thin and fragmented.

Cream to put within the layers is too runny.

Might sound like I'm being whiny or whatever, but it gets pretty infuriating, especially when I don't see one of them at all (as he lives in the city now meaning he's at least a 25 minute drive away)

I also live near the city and have recently scaled back big time on drinking and going out much to the disgust of my mates, they get around my lack of enthusiasm by just turning up uninvited to use my place for pre's, maybe you should do the same to your mate? Every weekend this will happen at least one night but I honestly don't mind it as I enjoy the banter and catching up with them without having to go out.

Never understood what the big deal with birthdays is - buy me a present and make sure I don't have to cook and I'm happy. Anything less than that and you're dead in the water

Retailers ruined it though with ads for unrealistic gifts - diamond jewellery, holidays, spa packages, fridges (like who doesn't want a brand new fridge for Mother's Day ) - the whole thing has just become so commercialised. We just need to get back to basics

Yeah I would rather just go for dinner or something, or combine the birthday celebrations. My mum claims she doesn't want much at all or doesn't want to do anything, then gets shitty when we buy her a small gift or two but refuses to say its because of our efforts.

Some of my mates and their lack of commitment to anything. At footy training at the start of the week and mid-week we tend to discuss what we'll do on the weekend. Literally every week one of my good mates will say "maybe", "I might come but I won't go anywhere afterwards" or some other garbage response. Now he's a good bloke and ripper fun when he comes anywhere with us, but for some reason he just seems to be so carefree about whether or not he does anything each weekend. I have no issues with someone wanting to stay home every once in a while, or for a couple of weeks if they're down on cash, feeling a bit down or whatever, but this has been going on since we finished school. He didn't rock up to his life long friends 18th celebrations because "he was busy studying uni preferences" which was a pathetic excuse seeing as he still had ages to worry about them. I'm already imagining how distant he'll be once he finds a girlfriend.

Adding to that, another mate (the mate who got dogged on his 18th above) has recently gotten full-time work Monday through Friday and has completely disappeared on weekends. His girlfriend got a part-time job a while back and would always send messages to her mates saying she was too tired from work (4 hour shifts, maybe three times a week at max) or wouldn't respond at all, and would give similar reasons to her boyfriend if he was coming out with us. Now he seems to be doing the same thing. In the times I was working 5 days a week full-time I found getting out of the house, or doing something with my friends on the weekend great fun and a great way to blow off steam from the working week.

Are we being unreasonable or are our mates just being a bunch of selfish campaigners at the moment too lazy to catch up with people?

I have the view that you're only going to be a uni student/part-time worker for a short period of life and it's best to make the most of the free time.

Sounds like they just prefer to spend what would be night out money on something else and/or have other social circles. Might just think of you as a teammate. It's pretty rare for people to stay friends with everyone from high school. A lot of those friendships are really just circumstantial.

Edit: Guy with the dick parents probably has an anxiety disorder
