I'm reading the "Tackle" at the moment.... or at least trying to read it. It's about the players who are going to decide their team's fate in the finals. About 3/4 of the way through I suddenly realise that he hasnt named a player. I suppose the sodden brain cells have forgotten what he was writing about.

When I learnt to write english, my teachers always told me that the written page was for communication and should be easy to read.... maybe Robinson didnt spend too much time in english class. His writing seems to follow his thoughts and they're a mess. "All over the shop" as they say.

And the grammar. I dont like to be one of the grammar police and I certainly play around with the Queen's english here but Robinson is writing for the major newspaper in one of the major cities in the country.

Que? What? Let me go through that again. So on the block? Mistake or extra emphasis? I still stumbled on it the first time through. And then there's "will be must-watch"......a must-watch? Maybe it seems trivial but my eyes just dont glide across the screen. If Robinson is a populist writer and if he's writing something to entertain the sleepy commuter on the morning train, then the words should basically read themselves.

I finished the article expecting to see the ubiquitous "Thoughts?????? " .....but it wasnt there.

I suppose Robinson has done his daily job.... lots of pubtalk ....a bit of everything.... the reader passes a few minutes of their lives

After all, we all know that the finals process is a long haul and we've got a few more weeks to go. It wouldnt be smart to use up all your powder in the first week. I cant wait for tomorrow's headline..

The problem with the media is that there is a lot of incestuous reporting of other media outlet's product.

There has been a number of articles this morning reporting on Buckley's 360 performance last night. One of these is by KATE SALEMME

She dutifully reports what Buckley said but the problem with a lot of bloggers who are paid peanuts to provide content, is that these people are wet nosed kids who are often pretty new to sports reporting or to life experiences.

Last night, Buckley put in a good performance to suggest that Cloke had a role with the Pies next year and Buckley said he was interested in discussing this with Trav if the trade doesnt go through.

The reality is Buckley is demonstrating that the club is not that desperate to get rid of Travis and is quite willing to hold him to his contract. The reason that they are doing that is, of course, that it up's his price.

It was interesting that Kate did bother to report on the salary issue. In response to the idea that the Pies would have to pay some of Travis's salary at a new club, Buckley casually floated the idea that this mightnt be the case if he was released from his contract. Is that the case? Buckley casually floated. Ahh! said Gerard as he spotted an important point. The fact is if the Pies dont want to pay for some of Cloke, there might be less interest from other clubs.

My point? Why bother writing the article if you dont add some value.....

You show good skills for conceptualising space ....you might be useful in designing game plans. I wish I helped mike123 more too...but I saw it was him, I panicked...

I've been mentally comparing Hawthorn's approach to the media to Collingwood's over the past month or so.

Not in interviews or press conferences but in their commercial involvements. Although Fox like to proclaim to the world that there are "no ads" I seem to see a lot of advertising while I'm watching footy on Fox.

The Hawks are sponsored by some european car company, and they have this commercial where they kick goals on top of rooftops through light sabres.....ummm well it's better than it sounds. Josh Gibson has one where he's pumping some iron and there's another from Luke Hodge where he is telling the world how great he is in pressure situations. There's another one where a group of Hawks show their strength hanging from the roof etc.

In all, the Hawks probably get a fair swag of money from all of it but they also seem to be promoting themselves in a football sort of way. Of course, they have won 3 premierships in a row so it's natural that corporations will want to promote how strong, smart or tough the Hawks are....

In contrast, I've a lot of Collingwood people talking to something called Graham. To put it mildly, a gimmick called Graham. We all know that you need to come up with more and more entertaining ways to tell people not to kill themselves on the road but Graham?...The problem is that it does nothing for the club. Enhance it by tying the club to a great community cause? Maybe.

Surely there's a corporation or cause out there who could use the Pies great history to promote themselves and thereby promote the club? The Hawks are doing more than just sell a ton of deodorant or a million vitamin pills, it's actually using the advertising to promote itself. I'd like to see the Pies do the same.

The Hawks ad you refer to is clever, annoyingly so, and entertaining. You are right, it promotes the positive things about the Hawks. Getting Luke Hodge to talk about himself cant have been difficult either. I cant recall the last time we had an ad like that, if ever. And lets not mention the shampoo ad.

Graham, on the other hand, is a bit challenging. I'm not so sure he is a gimmick. He's more impenetrable. He makes me feel uncomfortable, wanting to both look and look away. While I understand the message - to survive a car crash we need to be built like Graham - I dont understand the physiology of that. What does Graham have that makes him tougher than us? The ad is a bit obtuse, for me anyway, maybe also for its target audience (males 18-25)? I dont know.

Watching Fox Footy, I just hate the endless betting ads.

It's an interesting contrast between the two clubs. One club is doing community work and gets pasted every time Eddie opens his mouth. The other club is spreading a message of self-promotion and is admired religiously by the footy community...

I seem to be seeing a lot of Brody Grundy sporting the Heston Bloomenthal glasses in Latrobe Uni ads as well.
The clear attempt is a portrayal of the modern footballer as a thoughtful worldly type.
I remember uni as a booze addled collage of bad decisions.

Just watching Damien Barrett declare Collingwood's interest in Del Santo as a player and by inference as an assistant coach. Nick didn't deny it - he's the guest on TFS, but it seems that the footballers have no interest whatsoever in the offers made to them. Nick knows that offers exist but doesn't know any details. Barrett seems to have an easy job, packaging together a couple of the more public potential trades, then presenting them as gold nuggets of football news. Del Santo and Travis Cloke use 'myself' and not 'me' when they speak about these offers, which sounds insincere, as though the word has been employed as a smoke screen rather than to frankly communicate thoughts.

I have not seen Graham. Where might I view this man's performance? Or am I asking the wrong person, given the rapid lapse in memory to which you freely admit?

the vfl footy has just started on the online radio..

I have to register my unease with the way the Collingwood site is reporting the trade period.

It's one thing to give the members the news of what is happening in the media but its another thing to actually seem to be promoting the trading of Collingwood players. The media people need to understand what their role is. They are public relations people. They are not journalists. The role of public relations is to promote the agenda of the club.

I dont believe some of the stuff on the collingwood site is promoting the best interests of the club. The obvious example is Travis Cloke who the media people gleefully reported as being "circled" by other clubs. Fair enough if Travis was halfway out the door but he is under contract.

The next "victim" is Nathan Brown. The problem is that the site is either paraphrasing or directly quoting print media but without the quotes. One example:

No quotes. When you read it, you forget that it is referring to an Emma Quayle article. It just smacks of disloyalty to me. I would much prefer them to actually write an article about the Age article and to say

The Age article acknowledges that Brown may remain at Collingwood, it does argue that he would be an ideal replacement for Michael Firrito etc etc.

I argue that it gets worse when you realise that the Collingwood site isnt reporting on claims against Graeme Allan etc. Why not report that?

I understand if they are trying to do that but I disagree with that approach. As I said, I have no problem with some "spin" being used after the player has left the club but I don't like the site promoting the benefits of players leaving before an announcement has been made. I don't like how the site just restates other media outlets opinions without making it clear that the content or the opinions expressed don't reflect what the club thinks.

If anything, I think you could argue that Hawthorn has demonstrated a greater ability to keep itself grounded in reality than we have - talking about dynasties after a single premiership. I was always amazed when Essendon people spoke of the 2000 side as being the greatest team in the history of AFL/VFL..... I mean, did they really think that. Hawthorn has been the most successful club since I've been alive and one of its strong points has been its ability to deal with the reality of its current circumstances. The only time that it lost its nerve was the proposed merger with Melbourne. If you're correct than the next few years will see the hawks lose the plot. I see the approach of using and reinforcing the public perception of the Hawks as a savvy move to spread the word. It's one thing to have a marketing plan that is based on "being special", and actually believing you're special. I don't the hawthorn administration is that self-absorbed. You might ask yourself if the Collingwood administration is being objective about its attitude of the Pies being the biggest and best.

It seems a very roundabout way to give a simple message. Maybe they should sit down people who head car manufacturers and show them a few Graham commercials..... make a point to those who manufacture cars that are designed to go 150+ kph, what the effects are when they sell people these vehicles... If this is such a serious topic why use such a gimmick?

It doesn't really matter anyway because my point wasn't about the Graham message, it was about how Collingwood doesn't use the media to self promote like Hawthorn does.

btw I'm glad that you have finally resolved your Graham uneasiness. I still wouldn't invite him around for dinner. He just doesn't look cool enough for me.

From the link, I get to a know a lot about Graham, but learn nothing about the Collingwood football club. Surviving car crashes seems to be the one and only message. We live in a country which has an obsession with avoiding road trauma despite the fact that very few people are killed on our roads. The death rate from car accidents was three times higher back in the early 70's.

Graham seems to me to be little more than an educational toy, probably the precursor to the introduction of even more draconian measures to further reduce the road toll. I expected him to be wearing a Collingwood jumper and beanie, but instead he seems to be wearing a slightly ill-fitting layer of greyish skin.

Why has the club aligned itself with this somewhat unsightly creature rather than promoting what it should do best - produce great footballers who promote the skills and excitement of the game and the joy of belonging to our football club? Is there some other ad featuring Graham and Collingwood footballers? This link doesn't make any reference to the club.

Graham will certainly not be receiving an invite to dinner at my place. He looks dull and is most likely devoid of decent conversation. If he in any way, shape or form represents Collingwood in 2016, then perhaps it's time to switch my allegiance.
