I would say we are playing finals next year if we get Rockliff, he will play until about 32 which is about the average for an elite mid these days (my Guess) that gives us 5 years of his best footy. Hopefully we are getting close in that time and some of our kids or FA might be ready by then.
How many players are still playing their best footy at 32? Think of our 09/10 grand final side. How is Joey going now compared to then? Dal Santo? Goddard who is only 31? I don't remember Hayes making All Australian at that age.

For every Boomer Harvey there are 10 guys that start falling away at 29/30.

I reckon Joey and Riewoldt are in career best form. Rooey would kick at about 50% in front of goal then now he converts most of his shots. Dal is slowing but still would play on if they were challenging, Goddard Essendon captain and was already starting to fall away in 2011. Never quite made it to elite. How are Burgoyne and Mitchell or hodge?

That's about what the deal would be. Giving up a young top ten talent and the chance to get another good kid next year for a 27 year old that will be past his best by the time we are really contending seems crazy to me.

Yeah but even a very good player at 10 is going to take years to really be useful.
Look at a quality kid like billings for instance.
It's unreasonable to expect a kid, even a future A grader like billings to be reliablly consistent within their first few years.

Even a kid like gresh who has started great will likely be up and down for the next few years.

We know we'll get A grade quality from rocky from day 1.

And he's young enough that he should be able to maintain that level for 4-5 years (ie our window) ala joey etc.

Plus rocky is the exact kind of mid we need.
Fast ball winner

Riewoldt is a freak. No way is Joey anywhere near career best form.

You've picked out three guys that are playing well, there'd be dozens of others the same age that have retired because the game had gone passed them.

If age wasn't an issue we wouldn't have bottomed out like we did. Most of our players were only just nearing 30 in 2012

Roo - 29
Kosi 29
Joey - 28
Dal - 28
Goddard - 27
Hayes - 31
Fisher - 30
Milne - 32

Are you telling me age had nothing to do with us dropping off like we did?

This is gonna set a few campaigners off but how about this:
Rocky and 20 for Armo and 10

I was gonna throw out: rocky straight swap for Armo

Then I thought better of it!! :P

Joff.

Your thoughts on us as a current destination club?

Would it be wrong for a few of us to not be a little disappointed & ask ourselves why? if we lose out to clubs such as Carlton etc after 12 wins & such a young group.

A lot of media and other people in the footy world have hyped us up as a big destination club.
Hyperthetically, if we do not land any of our men this trade period, I personally would be a little disappointed.
Traded period hasn't even started let alone finished.

Have a Bex and a lie down.

I suggest the cress on Carlton has landed GWS players is due to SOS.

Gresh and Billing stats for their first season were very similar and some would have Billings sold off so you need patience for sure.

Me when I sat down to catch up on this thread only to find out that we're trading one of my faves Eli, missed on Laverde, missed on Marchbank and are targeting an overrated (IMO) flog like Rockliff and a cooked McKenzie.

I'd expect finals without both. We weren't far off this year. Growth with existing youngsters + Carlisle = finals.

Gaining a kpd & a solid mid may get us closer to being competitive in finals.

I reckon Collingwood thought that this year too. You need a lot to go right and natural progression sometimes isn't enough.

I don't get how people think Rockliff is over rated, he hardly gets noticed in Melbourne. He is an elite player.

Armo at his best is a B+ mid. I think Rocky has enough runs on the board to be called an A+. Also 2 years or so younger I think

i reckon we are trying to create mid field depth not lose players. Armo got minded a lot more this year after a break out 2015 and he has also set up forward more often to allow Ross on ball time.

Brett Anderson has SPS at #10 on his big board... surely doesn't slip?? Thought he was touted as top 3
And even Brodie out to 6.

But a couple of Academies in there. So more like 8 for SPS (unless they hold on to those picks).

I don't think his output is anywhere near as impressive as his stats suggest, wouldn't call him an elite midfielder but that's just my opinion. The type that I would love to get as a free agent but wouldn't like to give up a first round pick for.

'Metres gained' like most stats doesn't tell the full story but this was damning - http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/dus...s/news-story/b23869c25a6aebd279f9faf2c5772337

Armo & Ross would find it much easier with someone like Rockliff in there helping them

We do seem to be publicly linked to a lot of players but have a lowish strike rate in landing them.

I wonder whether we are actually interested in them or whether it's just based off comments about big salary cap space and interest in free agency to improve the list
