Because those on higher incomes have to pay slightly more for their healthcare so that healthcare can be extended to 20m+ people that were previously excluded for a range of reasons including that they had pre-existing conditions.

Exactly. The republican vote was actually lower this year than in both 2008 and 2012, 100k less than 2008, and about a million less than 2012. The democratic vote has lost 9 million votes since Obama in 08, five million since 2012. I'd say they're the silent majority if there is one.

9 million drop off in 8 years. That is some impressive work by the DNC. Im sure they all still hit their KPIs and will get their fat media share bonuses.

Apparently many of them prefer to be bankrupted by medical bills when they are in their 50s and 60s when their bodies start falling apart.

Its a strange one. Highest medical costs in the world yet they hate an idea which sought to just lower those costs just a little bit, and provide insurance coverage to just a few more people.

A very large number of Yanks want the most minimalist approach when it comes to involvement in their day to day lives, strongly believe that anything the Govt touches will be infinitely more expensive than if left to market forces and have a healthy fear of anything the Federal Govt mandates.

OC ticks a lot of these boxes, making running a scare campaign really easy.

It doesn't help that OC hasn't been terribly well run and the costing models going forward look terribly scary.

Clinton would of had to restructure OC for it to be a viable ongoing concern, Trump will certainly trash it quickly and I would think in its entirety as it is one of the things he can do that his supporters will cheer and the impact is going to be largely felt by folks who I'm guessing are in the Democrat or Did Not Vote camps.

To be fair the OC that was passed was a massive compromise because of the need to get some republican backing in the house to pass, it needs tweaking, not repealing.

If you are to label me as being offensive or insulting, then hell yes; it must be an intended consequence. I must have intended to insult you or offend you.

If you're talking about inadvertent offence, caused without implicit knowledge, then one party simply labelling the other as somehow objectively offensive is often just counterproductive. A far more enlightened approach would be to recognise that a divide of understanding exists between you and work towards bridging that understanding. This plays out in cross-cultural affairs every day. Line up a group of people diverse enough and some actions considered offensive to some will be entirely acceptable to another.

America is not a unified nation and without an Obama, compulsory or Saturday voting ...it was always going to turn right.

USA is a right wing nation that only goes left of right when they have a charismatic leader, Bernie would of been a chance. I didn't pick Trump winning but I did say it would be closer than we think ...I thought the Latino vote itself would of delivered 1 or 2 more states to HC.

Full disclosure time. I am Bernie Sanders.

I am a 40 year old white male, professionally educated. I wanted Hillary to win, against Trump. I wanted Bernie to win, against Hillary. I think Bernie would have smashed Trump. Trump may be the greatest demagogue of our times.

Yet, since winning he's given a gracious acceptance speech, and met with Obama for taking office which the NYTimes said:

“I want to emphasize to you, Mr. President-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds,” Mr. Obama told Mr. Trump as the two sat side-by-side after the roughly 90-minute meeting. The president called the session “excellent” and wide-ranging.

Mr. Trump, who said he had never met Mr. Obama before and expected the meeting to last only 10 or 15 minutes, said it had been a “great honor” to sit with the president.

“We discussed a lot of different situations, some wonderful and some difficulties. I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including counsel,” Mr. Trump said.


It was an extraordinary show of cordiality and respect between two men who have been political enemies and are stylistic opposites — Mr. Trump a brash real estate executive and reality television star whose campaign was defined in opposition to the sitting president, and Mr. Obama, a cool-tempered intellectual who has pressed a progressive agenda in office.

It may very well be that he turns out a good president. I lean towards this being unlikely, given the rhetoric expressed during the campaign, and the investigations into his business dealings, but my thoughts are irrelevant here. The American people spoke, and they said Trump. Perhaps they were duped by his promises; perhaps they wanted to send a message to coastal elites ( http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/ ); perhaps it was anti-Hillary. Whatever the reason - and a multitude of books by people who claimed to know it was going to happen will be written about it - it happened.

Personally, i think the Democrats only have themselves to blame. Go through the Podesta emails and see how the DNC rigged the primary against Bernie. Whether or not Bernie would have gotten the nomination is almost moot - is this the kind of behaviour people want to see in a president? Trump took it and said, the system is rigged. And he was right. And people weren't going to stand for it anymore.

Cultural Marxism might not be dead, but it just got an almighty punch in the face.

Dear Social Justice Warriors - it was easy to be an SJW when there was an American liberal in the White House (although El Presidente Trump is apparently a Manhattanite liberal, so we'll see). Let's see if clicktivism works for you when someone you oppose is in the White House.

As for the popular vote - 60,274,974 votes to Clinton, to 59,937,338 votes for Trump - good for her. Of course, the US system isn't set up as "whoever gets the most popular votes wins", so it's ****ing moot. What it really means is the DNC were dumb enough to go for volume instead of targeting places. Makes Trump's campaign look like genius. And maybe it was.

My only hope is that like all of his other bluster, it turns out he believes climate change is real. Other than that America, it has long been said that a populace votes in the government it deserves. Arguably, truer words have never been spoken.

I didn't refer to all Trump voters as dumb. I just said there were dummies who went out to vote for Trump unaware that the man had lied to them and misled them so many times during the campaign. And there were.

As for being a lefty, it's a mistake to assume anyone who doesn't back Trump is leftist. I'd rather believe in a small, minimal-interventionist benevolent dictatorship. This election only confirms to me how ridiculous a two-party representative democracy really is.

EDIT: Oh yeah. The video, I didn't get through it. Once I hit the part where he started talking about "the left" making up these stories and then went on to talk about blacks and Muslims making up stories as his evidence, with no proof as to these groups political leanings, I gave up. Now that some of the hysteria is dying down and become are become sick of the leftist alarmists it is time to review what actually happened.

My take in it is that there are 5 main reasons why Trump won and 3 reasons why Hillary lost

Trump
- Economic policy. Whilst we ignored it here for most of the time it was the biggest topic to many. Small town America as they call it is suffering as manufacturing industries and those that support them close because of cheap imports. This means that the TPP is not popular and Trump wants to rip it up as it will not create US jobs. This means moving to larger cities creating a problem of no money in smaller towns.
- Foreign policy. Trumps has said repeatedly he will be less interventionist than Hillary, instead focussing domestically. Americans don't like their kids coming home in body bags and see Iraq & Syria as a different universe so leave them over there.
- The establishment. Trump isn't part of it, people are sick of the established political structures around the parties, their jobs for the boys, lobbyists and policy boards which do nothing but chew up money and leaders stick their mates on. Trump wisely never let them near him and it paid dividends.
- Non-PC. Political correctness is hated by many (me included) and Trump never tried to be politically correct, doing so means you don't actually say what you think, Trump has constantly said what he thinks.
- Turnout demographics. The Trump core were always going to vote and many Republicans who hated him still voted because the thought of Hillary just made the vomit. Trump go his supporters to turn out and vote as well as campaign for him.

Hillary
- She is tainted. Trump may have sexual harassment cases against him, but it is nothing compared to FBI investigations over leaked emails. Hillary is seen as a crook in much of America (even those who voted for her), this meant her preaching about Trumps legal issues fell on deaf ears as those she wanted to appeal to just look think, that's the pot calling the kettle black.
- Bernie Sanders. Because she couldn't kill him off before the convention, it meant she had to focus on him and not Trump. Trump killed off his opponents well before the convention. This was seen as sign of weakness, not a good thing in politics. She also never was able to properly tap into the Sanders voters, they didn't warm to her and many saw no difference between her and Trump so didn't vote.
- She is more of the same. As Trump is anti-establishment, Hillary as big an establishment candidate as their was on either side (Jeb Bush was the other). She made some poor decisions and refused to back away from them. Whilst most have admitted NATO massively screwed up with Libya she hasn't and it hurt her as they don't want those policies anymore as they don't see the benefit in them to the USA.


The Democrats didn't learn from Brexit. What happened there was grass roots campaigning and those out of major urban centres wanted change away from the global economy which they don't feel is working for them. This is happening here to, look at the rise of One Nation, its not an accident and they won't go away. The Liberals by picking up their policies are actually making her stronger and more popular, they just don't get that the way they campaigned 20 years ago doesn't work today.

TBH that alone accounts for the bulk of the reason Trump won.

And of course the record low democratic turnout in protest at the ludicrous candidate selection process that was patently undemocratic - the Democratic party needs urgent reform and to remove itself from Clinton / "pay me to speak" influence to get back to it's roots as a working class party.

The blue wall crumbled far too easily for people to put the Trump victory down to mere culture wars and fear-mongering.

Alex Jones latest videos show that the honeymoon won't be long for Trump among one section of his supporters, already saying he needs to arrest Clinton otherwise his victory is meaningless.
