The only question would be longer rookie contracts for early draftees.

Something AFL should have done when FA was brought in. They still can do this now, but with AFLPA collective bargaining more focused on revenue sharing, this won't happen any time soon.
Totally agree,
  • 1st round selections = 4 year initial contract.
  • noobs like Wingard who suggest
Speaking exclusively to AFL.com.au, Wingard said he didn't slip under their radar, he just didn't want to be part of what they were building. He said he had no option but to be totally up front with then senior assistant coach Mark Williams and coach Kevin Sheedy when the pair interviewed him ahead of the draft. In what was a brave, considerate and mature move, he made it clear to the Giants they'd regret drafting him.
    - Should be banned from playing for 2 years!

Player out of contract requests a trade to their home state. Pretty standard fare isn't it? Why would Schache be a special or "absurd" case?
Of course it is standard, but again raises questions that the minimum contract terms for first rounders is too short particularly when it is constantly to the detriment of the Lions.

If he leaves it'll be a really sad day.

He's going to be an absolute star no matter where he plays. Just hope it's for us.

If he does leave we just have to fight hard and get compensated for him. Very telling times ahead, will be hard to sell to the members.

If he hasn't made friends with the current group and as reports suggest has moved in with the first year players - maybe they're more his cup of tea personality wise. If things still haven't improved for him and he's feeling friendless and lonely by mid year then he should leave. Honestly who could blame him if that is the case?

Of course the above is purely hypothetical based on one of the several rumors going around.

Lets just wait and see - I'm not worried and nor should anyone be. He will stay if it's right.

I wonder how close the AFL are to making it 3 or 4 year contracts for draftees, or at least for first round draftees. Has there been serious talk about the league considering it? Or has it just been Brisbane making the push?

Not sure why everyone is putting themselves through the pain of speculation. Anyone who says they know anything is talking absolute dross... People on here are compulsive liars and just make statements to receive a false sense of validation that they otherwise lack in the real world. In a simplistic view, Josh would be an idiot to sign before the new pay deal is struck with the players. Unless you are Josh Schache you've got no idea what's going on, so quit pretending like you do.

Does contract length make much of a difference? They can still request a trade or sit out a year like Cam McCarthy or refuse to go there in the first place like Wingard.

The AFL needs to make it more attractive for a player to stay at his original club e.g. limiting the amount of money a rival club can offer a player within their first 5 seasons.

Except we know from experience that every day that goes on without him re-signing there's a greater chance of him leaving. Other players have re-signed without the new CBA.

I guess that's a fair point. Probably in the extreme situations it's not gonna make any difference, but maybe in a case like Schache, I think we'd definitely keep him for the third year if he had a contract, and maybe that could be long enough for him to find his place here.

Exactly "from experience".. you are talking like a scorned ex-lover. It's the nature of football.. Give the kid a break and let him concentrate on working into some good form in the seniors, which by the way is what he should be concentrating on. I doubt having your fanbase create a ridiculous forum like this is incentive to stay. You are all acting like a bunch of immature children.

Spoke to Josh (hey the horse himself) last weekend, he is just as perplexed as his teammates on all the gossip around him leaving. He is loving life in Brisbane, all these accusations of him not having any friends is bullshit. Best mates with Hipwood and Matho, and was hopeful of returning to the forward line to be with Hipwood as he thinks there's real potential there. Contract issues are all between manager and club as far as I'm aware and he just wants to concentrate on his footy.

IIRC, Mayes was talked about as a definite to leave after failing to sign a contract extension before June. I think as Lions supporters, we're all a bit apprehensive, but let's take a step back and appreciate the talent that is Schache and allow him to mature.

Great, now we will be stressing out for 3 or 4 years instead of 2 ;)

It's not just us. Players leaving after their initial contract is becoming more common.

I think the media would be a far bigger issue then a few dozen anonymous supporters chatting in an online forum.

As far as your last comment is concerned I think you need to get a better understanding on how these forums work.

Awww come on now. You are taking all the fun out of it. How can we lose sleep, cut our wrists etc. if we get this sort of input. Time to pull your head in with this sort of commentary;)

Re the Wingard example; has there actually been a case in the modern era whereby the player has refused to play for a club he has been drafted and sat out for the mandatory two years?

I say modern era because there was obviously the likes of Jarman and others that were drafted to the Bears, didn't go and stayed in the SANFL, only to join their club of choice years later.

This is the truth my boys. We don't need to worry about josh leaving

2 years is ridiculous for a top class draftees.

They are still getting offered huge $$$ (overs) on potential at the end of the initial contract and yet the clubs are lucky to break even in most circumstances trade wise.

If they made it 4 years all parties would at least have a better idea of what the asset is worth and there is less speculative money being thrown around.

Josh Kelly is a good example, while North are taking a huge risk offering that huge deal, as a more established AFL footballer there is less risk for all parties.

Then there is also the fact that the short term contacts mean the draftee doesn't really have to buy in to the club he is drafted to because he knows he will get a 2nd chance at the end of his initial contract in his home state (on similar or improved money). If it was 4 years he would have no choice to buy in or at least ask to be traded at a fair price.

Double edged sword - if Aish were here for four years we'd be lucky to get a 4th round pick. Two extra years also to show mediocrity.

I'd rather we pick spuds and find out ourselves than have the opportunity taken out of our hands 50% of the time.

Spot on. Also Schache has proven that he isn't another spud. He's going to be a good player. I can see the club matching Richmonds bid, considering his potential and the difficultly to obtain a quality KPF. It's hard to find a KPF that wanted to be drafted to us.

Most thought Aish had proven he was a gun after his first year. Tbh I can't believe he has regressed so much.

We don't have the wins on the board (yet) nor the prestige of a Victorian club to entice players to stay. Hence, I would be completely supportive of the club if they put a MASSIVE contract on the table this year for him.

We need to retain our top flight talent, and honestly...if we had to pay overs to any bloke to keep him for the future, Schache (together with Beams, arguably McLuggage once we see what he is made of) would be in the top handful of names that would be suggested by just about anyone.

I think the one thing we can learn from the Aish saga is that he didn't want to be at Brisbane. His manager even put his hand up for Aish to be involved in the Beams Deal. If Schache wants to go home then we must make the most out of that trade. My view is that he wants to be at the Lions. I personally think it's the manager trying to milk us given our history.
