MRP / Trib. Tom Hawkins "made an example of" - accepts 1 match suspension

It saddens me how much we've sanitised this game.

They've eliminated the thuggery, and outright violence, but they've swung too far the other way imo.
He punched a guy in the neck/chin. It's bullshit other players got off, but that's a reflection that intentionally punching people should never have been tolerated in the first place, no matter the level of force.

Crouch didn't help Tomahawk's cause with his Academy Award performance.

There's no question had Hawk done it before the crackdown it would have been no more than a fine. Compared to Cotchin's effort it was a tap. That said, all players were given fair warning of the impending crackdown and while I don't like changing the goal posts mid season it was a mindless act in the circumstances.

Proving the MRP are now consistent in penalising punches of any sort I think we suck it up and move on.

I'm not overly confident that they will be consistent...
But I agree

Hypothetically what would happen if Hawkins and Cotchin tied for the brownlow medal at the end of the year…. Now that would be farcical, sorry Tommy you are now ineligible congrats Trent

I yearn, just a little, for the physicality of yesteryear.......

Card, Pickett, Dipper, Dermie, Rhys Jones, Senior, Jacko & Co must giggle at our definition of a 'punch' these days, and how we're steadily eliminating individual contests and emotion from the game.

Hell, we're even contemplating the elimination of a game icon - the centre bounce - because the AFL can't admit the standard of its umpires, and their adjudication, is crap more often than not.

The relentless, convoluted meddling with the rules, and knee-jerk, dictatorial governance by the AFL, is bloody frustrating

Rant over

The difference between the old days and now is that back then if someone was playing well they would get belted to stop them.

These days ball players have more protection, but the physical contests are still enormous... probably harder given players are bigger, stronger and faster.

There isn't the same cheap shit there was, but players are still called on to put their bodies on line week in week out.

The guy's got a lot of form. Ben Stratton nearly lost his head a few years ago and the Hawkins wasn't sighted for it. Time to send a message.
Let's hope the same message now gets sent to the 'Good Bloke' Hodge as well

Now piss off back to your own shit board :thumbsu:

Sure he did.

If Hawkins' punch on the weekend was worth 2 weeks down to 1, Hodge should've been banned for life for trying to turn Wingard into a paraplegic by ramming his head into the point post.

Danger going off the long run on Talking Footy.
Please update for those of us who refuse to watch that shit

And who aren't currently in control of the remote

Yeah, lot of cheap shots back then, and happy to see them eradicated.

But, for me, they've sterilised the game too much.

There was nothing in that tap by Tom, but you'd think he'd concussed the guy and broken his jaw going by the reaction.

Basically saying all players want is consistency, and the MRP are there to adjudicate each case on its merits, not to make statements.

One of the other panellists brought up Thompson's elbow on Danger earlier this season which got the same penalty as Hawkins, but had much more potential to cause serious injury.

Hawthorn supporter preaching about 'lots of form' o_O

That's rich :$

Are you lost?

Just a shame for us this didn't happen last week as they couldn't have had the Cotchin and Hawkins incidents side-by-side with different outcomes (except perhaps for a harsher outcome for Cotchin given the contact was a fist to the face).

Title of the thread says it all. Someone was going to be the line in the sand and this is it.

Let's start a tally of how many for the rest of the year get off with a fine or "insufficient force". Bet we hit double figures.

The AFL's 'mission accomplished' moment today

Because he went last year and the outrage caused every player since to get away with it.

There is no conspiracy theory or Geelong bias,

But the problem for Tom is that after they basically conceeded he was stiff last time, players have been pushing and pushing the line... and the media have been whipping this jumper punch thing into a frenzy.

Tom was stupid (or unfortunate if you want to look at it that way) enough to do it this week when it has been at peak overhype so he pays the price.
Yes. I understand all that, and basically agree.

But its not right to say if he had done it at some other time (a month ago, or 3 months ago, or whenever), he would have "got away" with it. He did it a year ago, and was pinged. So......
