The other thing I don't understand is why Lewis and Mitchell were traded out for peanuts?

Why did Hawthorn allow this to occur, while at the same time Richmond got a 1st round draft pick and a 3rd round draft pick for Deledio.

Lewis and Deledio are the same age, and at the time would have had the same amount of football left in them, What happened?

It looks like a monumental balls up from Hawthorn, as they should of at least got some currency back in for 2 all time greats.

It doesn't make any sense when you compare what the tigers got for Deledio

Yep - that's the big stuff up. It was in part because the O'Meara trade was so drawn out that these two were fired off quickly and without us being in any sort of bargaining position. There was talk that Melbourne were going to send a young player our way as part of the Lewis trade but when the hammer came down we had nothing to press them into a higher trade.

From an onfield point of view, from a list management point of view I understand moving them on, but really disappointed in what we got back. Even 2 x 2nd rounders doesn't seem unreasonable. Maybe slow, mature players aren't worth much on the market?

With Deledio - GWS would rightly see him as a final piece to getting a flag, and they have an abundance of high draft pick talent so paying a first rounder for that benefit sounds good. Mitchell and Lewis aren't the missing piece for either club - they're cool, experienced heads in emerging teams

Yeah i agree with you. But the reason was:

Hawks wanted to give back to these guys for the few years they have knocked back offers (more $$$) from rivals to stay at the club and win premerships. Accepting offers lower thrn there asking price.

They wanted to return the favor by making there exits as easy as possible.

Hawthorn most certainly wanted more for Lewis. But after the Mitchell deal thet was never going to happen.

Its an awkward situation to be in but in the end hawthorn made the right decision sticking to there word.

Im really torn which way to feel.
I argued to the moon and back that hill was worth more than a high 2nd on here and he is proving so. I want a more hungry aggressive hawthorn this trade period. No more accepting unders.

I am not sure how yiu can argue that getting a good trade deal for a player and allowing to make more money elsewhere are mutually exlusive.

Lewis is tgat to Melbourne and Mitchell is tgat to west coast

There is no logical reason as to why they were allowed to walk for nothing .

The only reason has to be because they were not prepared .it is the only thing that makes sense

Either way it was a clear error no doubt

Who is an eligible free agent player for the hawks this year, IE is Gunstan or Bruest a free agent?

This could be the strategy to get rid of a couple of free agents to get a pick in the top 5 of the draft.

Problem is that we are all starting to see just how good these guys are now without the support in their prime years of Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Hill, Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake, Birchall.

Essendon is 17th in the league for I50s (i.e. our midfield is shit) but we have four of the top 30 goalkickers. The players are performing despite the team being average.

By contrast Hawthorn's much vaunted forward line (roughead, rioli, poppy, breust, gunstan, etc) have all had significant declines in performance as the team has declined. Roughead for obvious reasons, rioli has had some injury woes, but you'd have to think that if they traded a gunston/poppy/breust in 2016 they would have got a much better outcome.

You might get a slight bump for the premiership player tag but we're seeing these guys for who they actually are now, not for who they are when they were surrounded by champions. And it's not pretty.

S.King played basically all of his final season @ the Cats in the VFL.

Ottens and Blake were the preferred ruck duo. Geelong offered him a contract commensurate with his ranking on their list...ie that of a VFL level back-up.

King decided he didnt want to cop that so moved on.

If King was the number 1 ruck, had just won the BnF...you reckon the Cats would have low balled him and then moved him on!?

When Slug announced he was going, Lewis was told he was a required player and Wright came out confirming he wasnt going anywhere.

But the wheels were in motion, Melbourne decided Lewis was worthy of a 3 year deal, and when Hawthorn were not prepared to extend his contract he was gone.

The Hawks didnt want to lose both of them, but had no interest in extending Lewis' contract.

So Lewis looked after himself and demanded to be traded to Melbourne.

The Hawks could hardly play hardball when it was Clarkson himself who got the ball rolling with his impromptu chat about his footballing mortality.

So end up with top2 in the BnF out the door for peanuts...complete balls up.

Hawthorn only ever said Lewis was a required player when it became apparent that Melbourne had backpedalled on their earlier offer of a higher pick. When Hawthorn said "well he's a required player then" Pickering ran to the media and they story broke.
"Hawthorn are trying to trade Jordan Lewis to Melbourne, but now say he's a required player!".

Anyway, you want to harp on about Mitchell and Lewis leaving like they'd have anything to do with our rebuild...and yet Lewis has looked decidedly average this year, and Mitchell is being spoken of as retiring in WA news today.
