McGovern isn't exactly setting the world on fire by the number of goals he is kicking ,he is only about the same size and build of Kersten. We need a bigger forward because Kersten, McGovern and McCarthy are much the same size. McGovern would be a huge improvement on Kersten but we really need a much taller proven goal kicking forward, unfortunately Hogan appears to have gone backwards.

That's just ' nuts ' about Jessie Hogan who the hell could concentrate on football in those circumstances , there's only one pill I'm worried about grabbing

Yeah not sold on Mitch McGovern either. Sure get him over if it cheap, but don't chase him.

He plays well as a 3rd or 4th forward in a team that score goals like we kick behinds.

He's McCarthy at GWS.

Having a bunch of 3rd forwards doesn't change anything. Slight upgrade on Kersten.

Could easily see McGovern putting up similar numbers to Kersten.

Being behind Tex, Jenkins and Lynch will free you up and allow you to take some solid marks as you're effectively playing on a 4th tall.

He comes to Freo, plays as a second tall and will just get slapped around.

No obviously not sure on Clark but surely the odds are against him getting a contract. I was mentioning that we have not got a lot of currency in our delists, its going to mean going deep into the draft.

Last year we cut deeper than I thought we would. But I was also surprised that we traded 4 players in, which meant that we only drafted Logue, Cox, Darcy and Ryan onto the main list.
Nyhuis, DeLuca and Grey have all been upgraded this year. I would expect at least two of them to be elevated at the draft.
If we manage to get one or two trades in from other clubs, then we can delist 7 to 9 players and still only draft 4 youngsters to the main list. Not that deep at all.

Yarran, Dawson, Griffin, Ibbotson, Ballantyne, Balic, Johnson, Clarke and Suban could all be gone, and if any of those players are re-signed (most likely Ballas, Johnson, Suban and maybe Clarke), then some of the younger guys like Sheridan, Crozier, Tucker, Langdon or Collins may get us some picks in the later rounds. Or Danyle Pearce may be delisted despite having a year left on his contract.

I think the delistings will be just as brutal this year as they were last year.

I'm really bullish on Langdon, Tucker, Croz, Collins all signing extensions now that Fyfe has re-signed. He was pretty much unanimously voted captain (bar four) and has taken less than market to offer better deals for the young talent. They won a premiership at Peel together last year and have all broken into the seniors and gotten opportunity while the likes of D Pearce and Dawson can't get a game with Freo. Blind Freddy can see the rebuild looks pretty rosy. Add to that the best training facilities in Australia and the new Perth Stadium, the weather and lifestyle, why would you want to jump out now on the cusp of starting something special?

Was about to post something similar but you have nailed it. Good post Clems knee.

The only add I have is that I agree Clarke's time on the main list is done, but if he gets a positive medical then perhaps he could be drafted to the Rookie list as ruck cover. I also wonder whether Danyle Pearce could be moved to the Rookie list. He has a contract but really seems to be playing out time with Peel. A year in the WAFL to help the development of the youngsters coming through. Just a thought probably won't happen. That would open the door for 2-3 of Nyhuis, Deluca and Grey to be upgraded.

Not sure about Collins though , playing one AfL game this season. Freo will delist him if a trade in can be done.

I would've thought we'd do what we did with Grey and Deluca for Clarke tbh. We won't guarantee him a spot on the rookie list and will look at recruiting another mature aged ruck through late national draft picks, delisted free agency and early rookie picks. If all that fails then we can redraft Clarke with our last rookie selection. All I really want is a guy who's at around the same level, maybe even just below but without the dodgy knees. If it's a 21/22 year old ruck from the VFL/SANFL etc (can't think of any in the WAFL) then that's probably ideal but I'd be happy with a guy aged around 25/26 tbh.

Only real difference with Grey and Deluca is I don't think we were ever going to not pick them up again.

One year older than your requirements .

Sam Baulderstone (Norwood)
Maybe the 26-year-old has missed the boat, but we've seen AFL clubs take a punt on older ruckmen in the past. Baulderstone has been the standout big man in the SANFL for the past couple of years. His tap work is excellent and he gets around the ground well.

Not sure about Collins though , playing one AfL game this season. Freo will delist him if a trade in can be done.

Griffin played one game in 2014 (admittedly coming off a knee but was fit most of the year). Not sure it's anything to do with freo not rating him (I personally don't tbh) but Johnson and Hamling have played every game and we sucked every time we've played a three KPDs. He'd be in the team this week if Hamling or Johnson was to be injured.

I don't rate him (Collins) highly only because of his disposal( not as bad as Dawson ) , but with Johnson at Hodge age and a.pearce injuries I find it hard to understand that Ross don't plan to build chemistry with hamling and him in a rebuild. Hawthorn are all over the shop with Gibson at the backline early in the season and now they are getting better in terms of chemistry from the backline with personal playing different position or newbie coming in . ( Sicily , Burton ,hertherly) and their rebuild are one year behind . This include rioli and poppy not playing much this season also .

We've got 3-4 picks between 40 and 60ish, from memory, so it's not like we're taking picks at 100+.

I do agree that having enough picks to replace those we cut is a slight problem. Ideally you don't want to be picking in the 5/6/7th round. This is where trading our first pick is handy.

When people throw up suggestions like pick 5 for McGovern + pick 17, they forget to consider that it's also filling an extra list slot, meaning we're out of the draft sooner or can cut deeper.

One of the undervalued benefits of the pick 3 for multiple picks and CMac trade last year was it meant we could cut deeper and rebuild faster.

Buddy pick #5
Taylor Walker with a NSW Scholarship (basically, they only had to spend their last draft pick)
Tom Lynch - messy. Pick #11, but only 4 other clubs had a pick before he was chosen, could be seen as an equal 5th pick.
Josh Kennedy Pick #4
Tom Hawkins Father/Son rule
Jack Riewoldt #13
Nick Riewodlt #1
Tom Boyd #1
Jesse Hogan #2 (mini draft)

We have exceptional midfielders, we don't have an exceptional power forward. With a chance of the best power forward in the draft and being set for the next 10-13 years, it should be our aim. But we have a lot of list to turn over and no 2nd pick, I can see why the recruiters would trade down - but we can get volumes of picks in the next few years, we probably won't get access to a drafts best power forward again for many years.

Well said. This year is done. TANK HARD now and then reload fast next year with a fit Fyfe, Bennell maybe, and a new key forward from pick 3ish

We need a few free hits like last year.

We are going to turn over a massive amount of the list:
Dawson, Yarran, Griffin, Clarke, Ibbotson, +/- D.Pearce, Sheridan, Suban, Sutcliffe, Ballantyne, Johnson.

Looking back at 2016/2017:

Turning Pick 3 into McCarthy, Logue, Hamling and Luke Ryan was a master stroke.

We used a future 2nd to land Sean Darcy, again master stroke. Very lucky he slid to our pick.

Pick 63 into Kersten, pretty good, hard to find a best 22 player at pick 63.

Chris Mayne into 23 into Brad Hill. Lol, just brilliant.

Pick Brennan Cox at pick 41 was just brilliant recruiting.

How will we fill 5-11 spots on the main list, on top of likely losing Balic and or other youngsters with only;

1x first rounder
1x third rounder
2x fourth rounders

Rookie elevations are a start but we need to get creative again. Greenwood from Adelaide is a beast and certainly worthwhile chasing. I can think of other players outside the 22 at other clubs who would be best 22 at ours. I'm not against downgrading our 1st rounder as long as we stay in the first round. Not sure we'll see the monster deal like we got from GWS again.

We will most certainly attempt to trade into the second round. I think we will attempt to trade Sheridan and Balic (due to his situation) in order to do it.

Would like to see the unsuccessful top 15 KPFs added to your list, as well as the successful later picks.

Can't see us trading Sheridan unless he asks for a trade. We are going to be over a barrel for Balic, unless there is a miracle and he doesn't nominate a club he wants to go to, which never happens.

But I think you are right that the club will try to get back into the second round, no idea how though.

I think some on here need to temper expectations for next year. We are not just a "fit" Fyfe and Bennell away from being top 8. Half our team has played <50 games. We won't be top 8 until that lot has played at least 50. That is a season or two. Don't get me wrong, those two would make a huge difference but our forward line is still a shambles and that alone will hold us back.

Would like to see the unsuccessful top 15 KPFs added to your list, as well as the successful later picks.

I am thinking you are expecting to see evidence to back up your argument by asking this. If someone does dig up all KPFs taken across all picks I think you will be devastated at the failure rate of the lower picks. I'd be willing to bet 90%+ of 'good' KPFs come inside the top 20 with probably 60% inside the top 10 (excluding F/S, academy etc).

The only ones of note I can think of outside of 20 are Jenkins, B.Brown and Mooney.

I would also hazard a guess that Tabs is well above average in terms of games played for a rookie KPF.

Mitch McGovern isn't a power forward. We'd be in a similar position having him in the side. Need someone like Tabs/Ape size.

Darcy looked good as a forward in the WAFL, with another summer in the gym he'll be a handy Forward/Ruckman IMO.

Aren't several of his Peel goals crumbing his own taps at stoppages? Not a bad thing but I don't think it is indicative of him being a good forward. Hopefully he learns to take a contested mark in future which will make him dangerous. I don't ever think he is spending a lot of time down there.

These are the player we I think we should target at the end of 2018 and 2019. Jetta would take over from Spurr. Aliir would free up Alex Pearce to play as the 3rd tall or forward, Wilson add rebound and the rest are just good players.

I am very glad Fyfe took less than he could have as if we can 3 of the players from 2018 and 1 or 2 of the players from 2019 we will be close to a flag in 2020 to 2022.

Players our of contract in 2018.

Shai Bolton (2016 Pick #29) 175cm/70kg - FWD
RICHMOND - Until 2018
Neville Jetta (2008 Pick #51) 180cm/80kg - DEF
MELBOURNE - Until 2018
Nathan Wilson (2010 Pre-List 17 year old) - 185cm/79kg - DEF
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY - Until 2018
Aliir Aliir (2013 Pick #44) 194cm/91kg - Key Defender
SYDNEY - Until 2018
Zac Fisher (2016 Pick #27) 175cm/68kg - MID
CARLTON - Until 2018

2019
Rory Lobb (2013 Pick #29) 205cm/96kg - RUCK
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY - Until 2019
Jesse Hogan (2012 Pick #2 Mini Draft) 195cm/97kg - Key Forward
MELBOURNE - Until 2019
Jack Martin (2012 Pick #1 Mini Draft) 185cm/76kg - MID
GOLD COAST - Until 2019
Stephen Coniglio (2011 Pick #2) 181cm/84kg - MID
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY - Until 2019

So thats Yarran, Dawson, Griff, Clark and now Balic to replace. You wouldn't think that there would be to many more out the door.

Would be brave to de-list both Griffin and Clarke, but Griff showed very little this year and if Clarke's body is shot then getting rid of both would be the correct decision.

Are Ibbotson and Johnson both out of contract? Surely you retain one of those at most?
