Don't wanna get into the trade side of this discussion because it's clear Adelaide will want as much as possible and we will want to give as little as possible.

Just a genuine question about lever regardless of if he stays or goes. Do people think he has capabilities of developing into a FB?
Like it seems that because he has excelled so much at being the 3rd man in at such a young age people are quick to point out he can get beaten one on one. But how many 21 year old key defenders are playing at a high level in the AFL? Our own Oscar McDonald still gets rag dolled weekly.

Also how does his kicking and decision making with the ball stand up under pressure?

P.S having lost Danger Davis Tippett Gunston Bock as well as potentially Cameron and Lever of late I'd love to see you guys win the flag. It's a ripping site to see your ball movement in full flow and you guys deserve a flag.
He's about to be paid north of 750k because he's an excellent 3rd man in. If you're going to pay him on his one on one defending skills you'll want to half that wage. His decision making is excellent his skills are pretty good.

Not talking about his current one on one defending. There aren't any 21 year old defenders outside Harris Andrews who can go with the best forwards. I mean as of now can he defend 1 on 1 against a 3rd tall type well enough and could he develop into a one on one defender by 25. Rance was crap at 21 and Hurley was a forward.

I don't see it, don't think he has the build (to put on enough size) to go with the monsters and he's not very quick.

To be fair neither Hurley nor Rance play that role for their teams. Seems the traditional stopper (Astbury/Talia) is coming back into vogue to allow the class readers of the ball to mark uncontested.

Rance is far quicker than jake, even Hurley would be, what jake has is smarts and composure.

if its that easy for Lever to walk to Melbourne through the draft what incentive do they have to trade with us in the first place?
Basically it's about not burning your bridges. There will almost certainly be a situation in the future (could be years from now) where Melbourne need Adelaide to work with them to get a trade done (maybe Adelaide have a pick or a player that Melbourne need to trade with another club).

If Melbourne tell Lever to go to the PSD instead of working out a deal then Adelaide will screw them over in the future. The end result from that is both Adelaide and Melbourne are worse off, so the only winners are the other 16 clubs.

As for Mclures article that the offer to Lever from Melbourne is 5 years at $750k, surely we could get reasonably close to that?

5 years at $600k, lose half the difference in tax and he gets to show some loyalty and play deep into finals.

This is how I see negotiations going:

Melbourne to Jakes dad: Crows want 2 first round draft picks and we don't think he's worth that

Jakes dad: I've never been so offended, my boy is the best, he's worth 3.

He then proceeds to call Saint Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood and even North.

As others have said, it's his kicking and decision making with the ball (plus his intercept marking) that are the major strengths in his game. He's just got enormous composure under pressure that gives him the confidence to sell a bit of candy with a little sidestep. He just always looks like he's got all the time in the world.

Are we talking about the same Jake Lever?
Kicking a major strength?

Well, maybe not a major strength, but competent at least :P He has composure and makes good decisions under pressure and generally hits the target when he does so.

Dunno if you have seen much of him but sounds like Jetta for us. Seems to always be able to put a step on to find space and then generally aims for kicks 15-30m away. Nothing extravagant but rarely misses either. Very neat and effective at retaining the footy.

Kidnap him tie him up until after the trade period

You overestimate the intelligence of people on Facebook.
Why.
"Like, here's a picture of me, like, eating a sandwich" and "here's another picture of me, like, doing absolutely nothing of interest."

Well I can only think of the one instance where a club swooped on another player that didn't want to be there, so history says it's unlikely?

That's not quite right though. How many players have ended up at the club they originally chose after the deal fell through and they went into the draft. Luke Ball is a yes, but only after pricing himself out of the market with the fake 2 year deal that turned into 3 years for an extra SFA. The AFL have stated as fact that an attempt at a similar ploy will not get pass the gatekeeper again. So, we're talking about 2 players who ended up in a draft after deals failing to get done. Only 1 was successful and the loophole has been closed. Brisbane would be mad with their cap space to not grab him, play him for 12 months and then sell at a tidy profit. And let's face it, as long as Jake is getting his $900k, I doubt that he wouldn't be happy to spend 12 months up north.

The fact they have the upper hand big time is Melbourne know he's going to name them as soon the Finals are over, everything indicates that is the case though it's not official. But you guys can go on with your hyperbole of sending him to the draft, getting his true value etc, the fact he's uncontracted dictates we will most likely get unders to what some of you are expecting. No matter what the club settles on I'll bet there will be a meltdown on here, it's the Big Footy way.

We'll get unders no doubt, but there are degrees of unders. As an example, we'll almost certainly get less unders than we got for Dangerfield. But the point is that there's no way they risk him going to a draft with a price on his head. That doesn't mean that we'll get true value, that's exceedingly rare for an OOC player, but I don't think that Melbourne are going to be able to risk not paying a reasonable price.
