Yep, I got that. Unfortunately GC looks to have taken a step in the right direction by appointing Dew, but at the same time a first year coach is unlikely to work miracles. Will be interesting to see what happens, because we’re in to him up to our eyeballs.

Let's not forget they (the dogs) saw the need to bring a second KPF after winning the flag, so despite their success they clearly viewed only having the one tall forward as a deficiency that needed to be addressed.

Watts was the number one pick and the golden child for nearly a decade at Melbourne. All of a sudden the Dukes brothers (I would imagine exactly like the Melbourne board) have made a bet that a less fortunate player may perform better than him and now he is out on the street.

Watts will be feeling down in the dumps and life will be tough although he will get to look at Jaimie Lee Curtis’s boobies. But after that this will happen at the Melbourne best and fairest.

Then later Watts will have received his wake up call and lucky enough to be given another chance at Collingwood. Now he won’t be the golden child but just a bloke who has been given another chance at a club. He will be scared and nervous and wanting to try harder than ever to fit in. Unfortunately this will mean that at Halloween he will deeply offend Harry O.

But then in 2018 once it is business time again, Watts may realise that this change was what he needed to finally live up to what he is capable of. And just like Heath Shaw, being TRADED TO PLACES may be the kick that finally gives him what he needs to have a strong career at another club and make Melbourne wish they never let him go

I agree with you that the team requires a second marking target up forward and that a second genuine KPF(not elite just competent) is the most sustainable model but it is not the only model.

Given the composition of the list there are two possibilities that stand out for me. First is one of Cox or Reid at full forward. The problem with this is that they lack mobility. Therefore if you go down this route the forward structure has to be set up so that they always have one or more smalls in support, first to crumb off any aerial contests and second to provide defensive pressure, either directly or by corralling the opposition back towards the big guys(they may lack agility but they still take up real estate).

The second option would be to use Fasolo as an undersized key forward(I distinctly remember a game against Richmond where he made Rance look second rate in many one on one contests). Again for this to work the forward line structures have to be organised to suit, in this case that would mean coordinated leading patterns to separate the defenders otherwise an undersized forward line is liable to concede too many intercept marks.

The two obstacles to either of these plans working are first they require a level of organisation and team work among the forwards that has been absent the past several seasons. The second is that the four main forwards in these scenarios being Moore, Elliot, Fasolo and Cox/Reid are not able to provide enough at ground level. Therefore as the two lesser talents of the four only one of Cox/Reid or Fasolo should play in the same line up and the other replaced by a small who can provide defensive pressure while still contributing on the score board.

That leads me to my conclusion that if looking for a ready made player to improve the forward line it is not a key forward but a small that should be targeted while another tall is acquired through the draft. A quality ready made small will be cheaper allowing pick six to be retained hopefully for use on a young KPP while also providing flexibility to the coaches when determining their preferred forward structure by compensating for what would otherwise be top heavy set ups.

Not opposed nor excited by the prospect of Watts, but for a reasonable price I'm not against it in principle.

If we do go this way, what are people's thoughts on trialing him as a key back? Yes I know he has a lighter frame and would get outbodied by the bigger key forwards, but in todays game of zones and 3rd man up it might just work. He has excellent speed and is the right height. He would make it from contest to contest extremely quickly which would be very useful in a zone. Also very good field kicking and pace to bring it out of defense which is an area where we are lacking.

I feel like he is the type of player that has a lot of scope but just hasn't quite clicked yet, perhaps a positional change along with a change of clubs could prove the catalyst?

I've been saying that for a while too.

Firstly, had chats with a relative of his who tells me that the family is tight, hence the pull back to Melbourne is there...

Secondly, he and the family are all Collingwood supporters.

Thirdly, the GC will remain bottom 4 next year. He would only stay there for money.

Fourthly, if we can finish a little higher and make a competitive offer then we'd have to be one of the favourites considering Cats, Demons, Dogs, Kangas, Tigers, Bombers are less likely to make 1.1mill + x 5 year offers because they either already have a performing KPF... or have salary cap issues

Reckon the main clubs pursuing him will be Pies, Blues, and maybe Saints

Lynch is a restricted free agent in 2019 right? So he only leaves if GCFC don't play hard ball and match. I know that rarely, if ever, happens but that could be the first time.
