It really depends on what happens for the rest of the year.

Last year Hawthorn were in a similar position, playing terrible football (we were looking at a top 3 pick). They realized they weren't going to make finals but used it as a development year, played some kids, started to look better and got back to basics.

If we are able to do something similar, just start to build some confidence back into players, give Coff and Clarke extended runs and get back to playing a better brand of football then maybe that gives us a platform for next year. Or we could just be putrid for the whole year which i think would lead to a full blown external review of the club (which may be necessary regardless).

But regardless I think it is very unlikely we let Richo go this year. More likely is that we change up our assistants etc. at the end of the year. If thats still not working then sack him next year.

Things can turn around quickly (North, Hawthorn, even West Coast to a lesser extent in terms of expectations) and we are also not the only team in this position (Essendon). Football is fickle, sometimes its the intangibles that make the biggest difference.

At the very least the idea of a Rankine, Walsh of Lokosius is enticing.

ive been a big supporter of the coach .. and strong advocate for the stabiliy over the very St Kilda sack first ask questions later approach but honestly im starting to think Richo may be losing or already has lost the players.. the whole energy coming out of the club at the moment is flat absoultly everything seems a little off from their media apperances to their social media presence its almost like they are just phoning it in.. theres not a lot of passion in anything we do ... honestly we have the team over this week here in Perth and ive got no clue what to expect ... we have both Peter Summers and Simon Lethlean coming to our function to talk about the club and ive got no idea how thats going to turn out.. no offence to the club at all but for our WA members they have got more information from me over the last two weeks then what the club has given them its our first game at the new stadium we should be jumping out of our skins about this but ive got members who still dont know where they are sitting for the game ...
im personally a bit concerned

neither Lenny or Mitchell would come withing cooowee of our club ... Mitchell has the resorces in his presonal budget at WCE that our club as a whole could only hope for ... he would only move for a head coach spot and even then i doubt he would for our club ....
Lenny loved our club but the club lenny loved is no longer there they are all moved on now so there is no real lure to want to return to the saints he would be more emotionally and professionally invested in GWS now ...

Well i mean obviously you would hope that we do something like what Collingwood is this year and then everyone wouldn't be talking about the coach.

But i think if we don't improve much this year and then start out next season 1 and 5 i think the club would realistically look to sack the coach mid year. Would only really mean paying him out for an extra year and considering the effect on game attendance and memberships i think it would be justifiable somewhat from a financial perspective. At some stage the pressure just builds too much and regardless of how good they think Richo is, it is an easy way to release the pressure and get rid of a distraction.

On the upside, we have a very young list and getting in good young players (a top 5 pick this year) and playing coff and clarke for 15+ games is only going to be good for us in the long term. If Freeman can debut that would be a bonus. Ideally we would get a leader like Sloane (he is a younger version of what Lewis has been for the dees). Then with our kids a year older, regaining Roberton etc. hopefully we will be able to push back up the ladder.

Remember, improvement is hardly ever linear. We aren't as bad as we are currently playing (at least i hope).

I have no idea what the club want. My guess is richo. And Lenny didn’t win a flag either way but if that is criteria I’m happy with a guy who was bog in a drawn gf. Whether he can coach is another question none of us probably know the answer to.

I wouldn't be opposed to getting Montagna back as an assistant. Seems astute.

Obviously, we want to get assistants from successful clubs. We got McGlynn and Playfair from Sydney in successive years so wouldn't be surprised to get another Sydney coach. Would be very keen to get someone who has been through the Hawthorn system. Scott Burns, Brett Ratten and Adam Yze would be good, but i would be really keen on Damian Carroll if he is available - he is head of their coaching and development which seems like something we could seriously improve on.

The only assistant i would be keen on us keeping (aside from Playfair) would be Kingsley, but even then, regardless of how good a coach you are, sometimes change is needed. Will be an interesting offseason i reckon.

We cant afford to get rid of him I assume so we don't renew any assistant coach contracts and replace them with experienced guys from successful systems.

If that turns it around spectacularly we can claim sticking with Richo was correct, if it doesn't by the time we can afford it, we pull the trigger saying we gave him every chance and the new guy has a great team in place to take the club forward.

I'm putting this up for feedback coz I'm not sure if I'm convincing myself of my own bulls*** or not.

What I've noticed in the last few weeks, "calmly" observing our team on field is, as I've said before, the seeming lack of structure around the play of the ball. In a contested situation the ratio of any teams players in the scrum verses the possibility of winning the contest isn't linear. So for example, if team "A" has 2 players, and team "B" has 4 players, team B's chances of winning are not double that of team As, but only marginally more because of all the other factors involved, particularly the decreased chances of a controlled outcome because of the increased numbers of bodies.
So with what seems to be Richo's game plane of "numbers to the contest", the resources that get committed to the contest become statistically less effective as numbers increase. What I see is that we are simply crowding extra players just outside the contest within a 2(or so) meter radius, whilst the oppo are committing the same numbers to the contest but setting their extra players further out in clear and repeated structures that allow them to clear the ball out if they win. Whilst our guys (if they win) are literally standing next to a teammate and only 2 meters (max) from the oppo player/s, meaning there is simply no good option to pass off to once we get possession. So in short we are committing more and more resources to an increasingly less likely outcome to try and cheat the roll of the dice, and other teams are playing the odds whilst structuring up to take advantage of any possible win.
So with what's going on Saints commit 4 players to a get a 40% chance and the oppo commit 2 players to get a 30% chance, meaning we double the resources committed for only and extra 25% chance of wining. But coz those resources are taken from the ball clearing area just outside the immediate contest, our ability to clear the ball once we do get possession is significantly reduced and the players needed for applying pressure are left flat footed at the site of the original contest. Simply put we are't getting value for numbers or effort because of the game plan, and that's why our boys are stuffed. Richo has the players bashing their heads against the wall on a losing proposition, and he's answer to why it's not working is that they are not bashing their heads hard enough or for long enough. Am I making this up?

Look it up but if you want to know a few facts we came last from 83 to 86 and won 2 games in 86. We also lost our first 3 games in 85 by margins of over 100 points. That's just a couple for you but I don't expect a response or you find something even more negative about this year. Remember this is only one year. The 80's certainly early were a whole lot of bad years worse then the current one.


By the way can you actually quote anyone who has connected the 80's and richos coaching ability. Bar you of course.

I get the feeling that Wosha (Essendon) and Richo have both gambled on the game evolving a certain way, to which the game has not (or in this case moved in a different direction). This has caused problems at the stoppages and ensuing clearance disabling our ability to provide our forwards with definitive marking opportunities.

Perhaps our goal kicking is to blame to a degree, however, our forward thrusts are seldom with purpose, and generally placing our forwards out of position. I don't for a second think that this is an easy fix, however, I do think that it can be overcome slowly i.e. by the time round 1 2019 commences. This scenario is not what we want to read, however, someone within the coaching department is clearly responsible for the current plight and needs to raise their hand.

Win lose or draw, I think Richo needs to face the fans on the boundary post game. It's not alright to only be seen after a good win or a chivalrous loss, dodging the membership only raises further doubts surrounding his credibility.

The club needs to be transparent moving forward, as I witnessed a great number of members gravely disappointed and disillusioned with the club yesterday. Finnis, Richardson and Co must provide factual and rationale reasons to the fans as to why it has gone so terribly wrong. Further failings will see Membership and sponsorship dollars decline without a strong statement.
