The new Courtney Barnett sounds rather good, might have to pick up a copy.

Theresa Wayman's album is pretty nice as well, a solid Warpaint solo venture like Right On!.

Ye seems to be extremely polarising. I am definitely a fan and it's just so addictive and easy to spin all the way through.

I hadn't really liked any Beach House since Bloom but 7 is a really great return to form and glad that they've finally changed things up as others have said.

TT's Lovelaws been getting the most listens of late. Similar vibe to the 2014 self-titled from Warpaint, which I loved. Similar strengths and weaknesses, would recommend for fans of that album. One of those solo albums that wears various influences on its sleeve whilst staying true to form.

Currently having my first listen to NTS3 since falling hard for it in late April and not wanting to burn myself out on something so special. The sessions have since developed into a continuous 8 hour album release for me, but this session remains the star among stars.

Curious to see what everyone would list as favourite albums for the year now that we're almost at the halfway point?

(In no order)

Tropical * Storm - A Laughing Death In Meatspace
Hot Snakes - Jericho Sirens
Graveyard - Peace
Jaala - Joonya Spirit
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!
Sleep - The Sciences
Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel
Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats - Tearing at the Seams
King Buffalo - Repeater EP
Joan As Police Woman - Damned Devotion

Harakiri for the Sky's new album 'Arson' is brilliant. If you like Alcest/Deafheaven/Sleepmakeswaves/Mono/Explosions in the Sky etc i think it could be right up your alley. It blends melodic black metal with atmospheric post rock as well as anything i've heard for a while. I love pretty much all of Alcest's work and for a while they were my go to band for shoegaze, post-rock & atmospheric black metal (depending on which album i choose to listen to) but that may no longer be the case. I've only just discovered the band so i havent really listened to too much of their music but if their other albums are as good as Arson they will quickly become one of my favourites!

God’s Favorite Customer is making a decent play for aoty for me personally. Hangout at The Gallows is one of the best openers so far this year, and then Mr Tillman rolls in brilliantly. Mr Tillman makes you feel like you’re actually apart of you’re own downward spiral. Musically, the album is similar to I Love You, Honeybear, with touches of the Pure Comedy style as well, but the storytelling comes from the opposite side of ILYHB. Instead of FJM drowning in love and adoration like ILYHB, he’s drowning in self doubt and lack of self worth. The Songwriter is absolutely beautiful. FJM has a realisation that his love is what is his money maker, and is unsure if he’d be comfortable being on the other side, having such songs be written about him.

Gets better with every listen too. I'm a big fan

Anna Calvi finally returns with Hunter on August 31st. Launay production, with some guest contributions from Adrian Utley of Portishead and Martyn Casey of the Bad Seeds.

Troye Sivan's Bloom is also released on that day.

Haha. The album is already out, mate. One of my early picks for AOTY too. It's a deconstructed rock masterpiece.
Deep Blue was a 64 bit lightning war
He was a data crushing Viking of a Commodore
He was the Mongol horde of the checker board
He was shock and awe with an Intel core
And a thing for the extinction of the dinosaurs

Dudes a fuxking genius.

Amazing album.

Yeah Tropical * Storm is my early standout for album of the year along with the posthumous Gurrumul album.

Combine that with a great debut from Flowertruck, an incredibly fun album from Donny Benet, another great record from Jack Ladder, and solid albums from Donny Love, Laura Jean, Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird, Montero, Verge Collection and Good Morning, and it's a very strong year for Australian music.

The upcoming Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever sounds like it's going to be pretty solid too.

Fmd the Snail Mail album is not bad. Wish it was a little more angsty (if that's possible) with the guitar showing more melody in places, but it's sort of what you want from her. Naturally, she will or should definitely grow outward and this sort of music is easy to do that with. The issue is lots of bands don't want to. Love the song Pristine, it's like this Blink 182 chorus with these Russell Lissack guitars. The bass and drums aren't even relevant but eh, again, something to hit onto next.

Like the new Iceage too; first song is so good. It's like some sort of Australiana schlock movie or something but I love the vibe and Elias is really using English well now.

As for Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino... it's a piss takey, unserious sort of album. As someone, or heaps have said, it's like Pulp. Don't mind them growing into that. It's one of those albums that you want to keep listening to because you just want to unlock it. Hey, maybe you never will, but it has intrigue. Very very glad they ditched the utensil rock.
