Crows to face Power in U23 trial game at Thebarton 23/2/2019

First real hitout by the boys ......1st qtr was a scrimmage & then it settled down and opened up

I had zero expectations from the kids ......obviously McAdam is 23 YO and Stengle has been in the system a couple of years ...so is it surprising they stood out more ?

Ned has some tricks as well as his fierce attack on the ball ....Jones, we didn't see enough off

Again, we're not looking for the youngsters to be in the best players .....it might be one play, that pricks your ears ....like Neds sidestepping

In the first half, there were a few passages of play where Jones was pressed tight up against the wing on the near broadcast side and nailed some beautiful passes. There was even one where he marked and casual as you like, on the left foot (he's a right footer I believe?) nailed a perfectly weighted pass to a half forward.

What I loved was that he seemed very composed in these few passages, didn't look rushed/phased at all, and also has a lovely kicking technique. To kick as cleanly as he did on the weak foot too was a bonus. Struggled to get involved after HT, but those few flashes of his clean disposal, combined with that elite pace and ferocity at the contest has me quietly confident we've got a beauty here.

We'll have a much better POV on the Draftee's after the JLT / SANFL trial games

In the 2nd half I only noticed Scholl once and that was a good tackle that resulted in Stengles goal. He may have got some quick touches on the far side that was hard to spot.

I think Jones got a lot more possies than was first apparent. He doesn't have any stand out physical attributes but in second watch he got more of it than I thought. He was pushed around pretty easily. Needs some more size.

I thought Butts was pretty quiet and struggled due to his size and inexperience.

I would have Ned a clear first with Jones second. The rest struggled imo
I'd argue Jones top end speed and gut running are standout attributes. I liked that he was willing to use either foot too (he hit up a nice left foot on the boundary line in the first).
He did seem to be caught off by the speed off the game though which is pretty normal.

Scholl seemed to pop up pretty consistently without doing anything too flash.

Would have liked to have seen more of Hamill as he was pretty invisible out there. Hope he can show a bit this year in the sanfl because his speed, courage and left boot look like great assets.

Any news on Davis’s knee? Not much mention of him on this thread. I thought he was very good. Presented very well. I reckon he would be a chance to take Govs spot in R1 if he can play ok in the JLTs.

I was sitting directly behind the Crows bench and he and the doc didn't look overly concerned. Put on ice as a precaution I'd say.

Just some thoughts after the replay.

Mchenry looks up to it. Was involved and pretty clean. Smart player. Can easily see him getting a game this year.

Jones was very indecisive with the ball and therefore got caught out a bit. A lot quicker than what I thought though. Mchenry looks more ready.

Stengle is extremely clever and highly skilled. He'll be a real player very quickly I think. Comforting to know as betts draws to an end.

McAdam also shows a lot. Has some good pace and very good skills. Probably a fair bit away in terms of fitness.

Knight looked a bit lost. Had no impact.

Crouch was decent in a struggling midfield. Was our best without starring. Obviously needs some more game time.

Murphy was probably second best. Had a really nice game in the midfield. Will be interesting to see where he plays this year. Not sure if he's best 22 but can definitely be handy when he does come in.

Keath is an AFL footballer. Calm with the ball and decent in the air.

O'Brien is pretty decent in the ruck but I'm not sure his skills are up to it still. Think he'll get a crack at it though.

Scholl and Hamill I didn't really notice. Not really in the game.

Doedee was good when he went near it. Pretty quiet.

Gooch was quiet but did some nice things. Such a weird footballer. Strange build and kicking action but he just seems to do the right thing. I really like him.

Fog had an average game but obviously not the best game for someone playing that role. Not a lot of clean ball coming in. I don't think he's too big and slow. He's got reasonable intensity and movement for someone of his size. He's a gun and will be in the AFL in time. Not sure why people are so reactionary.

Like all sanfl games, it's hard to stand out for some players when the other team is on top.

For port, bonner, Amon and Drew dominated. Amon looks great at sanfl level but I haven't seen him do much at the next level.

Marshall looks great. He's already shown how good he can be even at AFL level. Keath did pretty well on him still.

Duursma looks pretty good as does butters. Think they've done really well with their draft. Rozee still looks pretty slim and I think that may hold him back a bit early on.

Was at the ground and have also watched the replays to have a closer look.
Great summary that I largely agree with.

It felt really HOT in the sun. It was "only" 34 degrees but I was standing in the sun for the first half and getting cooked. I can understand some players working hard early and fading out late.

In the Stengle thread Reakts97 said that he played juniors with him and he had a knack for getting easy "out the back" goals. Some of this was evident this game, he has a natural goal sense and is elusive. Gets separation from his marker and gets the ball goal side. Seems like the perfect Eddie replacement with a bit more development and fitness. Probably never going to look like the ideal body shape for footy, but looks like he will be dangerous as a crumber once the ball hits the ground. Couldn't really get a read on the defensive side of his game, just noticed the pure offense. Looked more selfish than Eddie too, which in some ways is good, as he knows where the goals are, gets it close and isn't afraid to have a shot. Eddie passing off when 30-40m from goal is infuriating at times. Hamish Harlett in commentary also said that he had seen a bit of him at Richmond and impressed him and hoped that Port might consider picking him up but the Crows got him.

As Bicks has said, McHenry is going to fast become a fan favourite if they get to see him in action. Was around the ball in all quarters, always in the game. Doesn't seem like the sort of player who will go missing. Fitness and effort was noticeable. Has confidence in his game, tried to sell the candy a fair bit. In the 4th quarter where he sold the candy twice (which got him into trouble) and had to handball backwards to a contest, which resulted in Broadbent getting a defensive possession, McHenry was PISSED at himself for the mistake. He chased straight after it and tackled Broadbent over the boundary line and was swearing his head off as he got up. Expects 100% from himself. If he gets into the AFL team in the forward 50, he's going to make some defenders nervous. Will run all game and definately not afraid to tackle. Has the confidence to slot a goal too.

McAdam showed his X-factor. If he gets his hands on it around goal he is dangerous. At 18.48 in Q2 got a nice chase down tackle in on Butters who isn't slow. Needs to keep building on this sort of work so he might get a crack in the 2nd half of the season.

Davis showed plenty in the first half too before his injury. Needs to stay on the park this season so fans can get a look at him. Seems to have some X-factor and weapons, as a junior was meant to be blazingly quick too. Just whether his attitude and tank are up to scratch so he can contribute for a whole game.

Crouch did some things that looked really smooth. Managed to power away from the stoppage a few times, so the groin surgury doesn't appear to have slowed him down completely. Contributed and got through the game. Hopefully Jacobs doesn't fall on him at training anymore, as in commentary he admitted to hurting him a few weeks back. Jenkins needs to not bloody jump on his back at training to celebrate either.

Murphy also looked pretty good. Was one of the best on. Going to be in the mix of smalls considered for the AFL team if he can keep up the effort.

Keath and Doedee looked calm and solid in defence. Didn't get a heap, but when they did, looked pretty good. Keath had some pretty decent kick ins that got some distance.

Knight was probably the most disappointing. Barely noticed him. Expected much more at this level.

Gallucci was also disappointing. Got it a few times, but wasn't as dangerous as he should have been. Jacobs loves him in commentary. Thinks he has the best power to weight ratio at the club and with his elite leap should have a go at Ninja Warrior. Would be nice if he could get more of the footy.

Fogarty seems like he is going to be a frustrating player for us if he plays in attack until he builds a bigger tank and can get more of the footy. Does really nice things with ball in hand, elite long kick at goals, but just isn't in the game as much as everyone would like. In attack still looks like a player who will average the 6-10 possessions a game with 0-1 goals. Where you want him to push up into the 14-20 possessions with 2-3 goals. Really should be getting into the teens at this level, but it was bloody hot and a first hit out. Still a physical brute.

Hamill was one I was keeping an eye out for, and I wanted to do well, but he was barely in it. Was looking for a flash of something good to take away, but didn't really get it. Needs time to develop. Maybe needs to get more fired up and play more angry akin to McHenry. Seems to play nicer footy.

Poholke seemed to be in the action a bit, but seemed a bit vanilla. Didn't seem overly dangerous or do anything outstanding. I think he is more SANFL than AFL. Same with Wilson. Would have been interested to see CEY in this game for comparison, as at times in the SANFL he has got 40 possessions and wondering what level this game was played at in comparison.

ROB was ok. Sauce in commentary said he's getting there at training, but sounds like Sauce will be the main man for awhile. Kicking improving, with a nice mark and goal.

Butts seemed alright. Didn't get beaten easily and didn't look out of place. Needs time to develop, but was alright. Decent rookie.

Scholl was ok too without looking special.

Strachan's most memorable moment was a shot at goal from about 45m. Kicked it out on the full. Deffo needs time to develop in the SANFL.

The top ups killed us. Seymour got beaten alot, and that kick by Mitch Johnson directly to the player on the mark with a goal straight back over his head lost the game for us. Didn't really notice anyone else do much, they probably got beaten in the last 1.5 qtrs and were part of the reason why Port overran us.

Umpiring was pretty average. Especially for htb with no prior opportunity and a few missed Port incorrect disposals/throws. The new play-on 50m rule if you get past your marker is going to catch a few out, especially slower teams.

Going to get a repeat game at Alberton in a few weeks. Should be most of the same players, minus Crouch, Doedee and whoever else is ready for R1.

I'm definitely not an expert on this sort of thing at all. I think Murphy is dangerous in that defensive small forward position. He was in the 2018 grand final sprint, so has some straight line speed for defensive chase-down pressure, just don't think he has the size or tank for midfield/tagger at this stage. During 2018 he played 11 games and got 12 goals, got 3 in one game, 2x2, 5x1 and 3x0. Not bad for his first season. I think it is important to also look dangerous near goals so that your opposition player has to respect you and stay close.

Would say from first comparison that Ned would be maybe better suited for a midfield/tagger role than him with his larger tank and tackle pressure, with Murphy better up forward. Not sure who is faster in a straight line sprint, probably Murphy.

But Murphy, Knight, Gallucci, McHenry, and maybe Jones (after more development/confidence) are competing for that defensive small spot.
On the weekend Murphy & McHenry looked better than Knight, Gallucci and Jones by a long way, they had much more direct impact on the game and scoreboard.

I know he's on the small size for a midfielder but he played all his football as a midfielder with the Northern Knights...At least every time I saw him play anyway and he was invariably the Knights best along with Matthew Signorello, in one particular match playing against a stacked Ballarat Rebels midfield of Jarrod Berry, Hugh McCluggage and Willem Drew here in Ballarat Lachie and Signorello were highly competitive. Lachie also won the Northern Knights B & F in his draft year that he surprisingly went undrafted. Played quite a bit of midfield on the weekend against Port and didn't look out of place.

Northern Knights midfielder Lachlan Murphy takes home TAC Cup club’s best-and-fairest

ONE of the smallest players on the Northern Knights list stood tallest at the TAC Cup club’s awards night on Saturday.
Inside midfielder Lachlan Murphy was crowned the 2016 Brent Harvey best-and-fairest on the back of a sterling season.

The 173cm former Diamond Creek junior averaged 27 disposals and almost six tackles from 10 TAC Cup games while juggling school football commitments with Ivanhoe Grammar.

“Lachie’s had doors shut in his face all year, with things like missing Vic Metro,” Northern Knights coach Andrew Shakespeare said.

“And playing school footy he hasn’t had that consistency. But every time he’s stepped out on the field he’s got better with each performance.

“He rarely gets beaten in a one-on-one contest, in fact he probably wins a lot of 70-30 ball. He marks well above his head, he’s strong around the stoppages with clearances and he’s a goalkicker.

“So he really ticks a lot of boxes. He is height challenged against other opponents but he continually finds a way.”

A member of the Knights’ leadership group, Murphy polled 84 votes to win the award from fellow midfielder Luke Bunker (78 votes) and rebounding defender Mason Blakey (75 votes).

Thanks for the background info!
Just how that translates into SANFL and AFL form vs mature bodies we will have to see.
I'd rather start him forward and give him some rotations through the midfield, rather than Eddie running through the middle.

Funnily enough there was another height challenged kid Western Jets Connor Thar who played the bulk of his footy in the midfield in 2018 and had an outstanding year much the same as Lachie but went undrafted and it could only be size related. Like Murphy Connor Thar won the Western Jets 2018 B & F and he was also runner up in the TAC Cup's Morrish Medal to Liam Stocker. Maybe Hamish should throw him a lifeline too because like Murphy I'm sure he'd give 110% to have the opportunity.

Not Really, you'd expect him to get more of the ball in the sanfl, and you will always have more opportunities to receive the ball as a midfielder than a forward.

those midfield tactics have got us 46 wins in the last 71 games.
Some things happen despite weakness, not because of strength.

You look at Hawthorn, they were not the quickest midfield in the land, but they had a midfield structure and ethos that made them virtually impregnable to being carved up through the middle of the corridor.

We just don't have that. It happens with depressing regularity that our mids get caught flat footed in nomansland when the oppo streams through the middle of the ground.

I would go so far as to say that if our engine room was better drilled, we would have a 3rd flag by now.

I think he is actually really good insurance for Rory Laird. Not just because they are both small, but because he is a great natural reader of the play, wants the pill in his hands, and seems to sweep from behind the play quite well!
