Just occurred to me that Ratten may well be a genius.

1. Gets Carlton in to two finals series - a miracle in itself. Carlton of all clubs.
2. Arrives at the Hawks in 2013 at the start of a famous 3-peat.
3. Rocks up to the Saints, and suddenly there is a dramatic 180 degree turnaround.

Either it is a happy coincidence or the bloke is a genius.

Thoughts?

While I'm enjoying the ride so far, have the Saints really done anything yet?

Gold Coast are no world beaters, Essendon and Melbourne both look like they have issues at the moment and Hawks are injury ravaged.

Keep the lid on.

The Saints have had a good run but have still won 4 from 5. That could be 2 or 3 which wouldn't be noteworthy.

I'd rather go into a run of tough games with banked wins than not.

Getting shoved by Carlton might end up being the best thing for him.

They were headed down no matter what by the time Malthouse took over and the perception is that Ratten was stiff. If he’s stuck around he might have developed a stench but I doubt it now.

If the Saints stop performing and get rid of Richo I reckon he’ll get another crack.

Yeah, but you're also missing a bunch of players: Carlisle, McCartin, Roberton, Hanners, Austin, etc. What you've done so far is impressive given your omissions.

I was wrong about Ratten.

He is the template for the Adam Simpson style modern coach, who as a first principle is worried about things like team cohesion, supporting the players, etc. Though maybe rides the bumps a little more ala Fagan.

Looking back, getting Carlton to the finals was a huge achievement and he deserves another shot at senior coach.

That etc is doing a lot of work

Brett Ratten was a disaster at Carlton as senior coach. We are still paying today for his tenure.

We did not have a list manager back in his day. He was the boss of the football department and had sway over the recruiting and trading as well. In fact he had his fingers in almost every part of the club, even non football related things. Part of the reason he was given the arse.

Read the lists for recruiting and trading below. Pathetic. Set the club back 10 years in just five years of coaching. He thought he had a list that was good enough and did not treat the draft with respect or use trading strategically.

Fred Flinstone could have coached the Carlton list to 5th in 2011. Sadly the work in 2009 and 2010 did not attempt to turn over the list or build it up.

If your head coach is responsible for all your recruiting that is the club's fault.

p.s.
Who were Shane Rogers and Wayne Hughes?

Who were Shane Rogers and Wayne Hughes?

Two blokes who did not know anything about recruiting (just look at their record) and two blokes who could be bossed around by the senior coach. This was an AFL club that had still not acknowledged the power of the draft and that strategies such as multiple first round picks matter (see Collingwood for how well that strategy can work). This was a club that thought that having three number one draft picks and Chris Judd was all that was needed, list turnover and strategic trading be damned.

The whole recruiting and trading strategy was Ratten. Ask around about how Kane Lucas was recruited at pick 12.
