ANZAC Day should be Collingwood vs Geelong

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We will only agree to give up Easter Monday and play Collingwood Anzac day is if it is played at Kardinia Park. Another homey for the cats

How great it would be for the City of Geelong to host the ANZAC Day game.

City folk from Melbourne will get the opportunity to taste the amazing pizzas at Kardinia Cafe as well.

not only that, we could send some of the pies supporters straight to Barwon prison. Do the state of vic a favour

I don’t like either the pies or bombers however they built this game and deserve to keep it for as long as it’s still successful. I remember going to watch Richmond play Fitzroy on Anzac Day in the 80’s, it was just another game on a public holiday, played by different teams each year. Only became a big game when Essendon and Collingwood started playing it in 95.

This match up makes perfect sense for the biggest home and away fixture on the AFL calendar.

The biggest club being Collingwood.
The most successful club being Geelong.

Rotate the game between the MCG and Kardinia Park.

Collingwood vs Essendon has become too one sided.

I don't know which bit is funnier...

Biggest club
Most successful club
Or the idea that Collingwood would play at KP.

Overall, I'd say having all 3 together overcooks it a bit and pushes this troll down from good to merely average.

Success measured on last 10 years might be more relevant, certainly pre national comp would have Port top of the pops.

Surely success in 2nd tier leagues would have to be discounted heavily (if it's counted at all).

The first point is correct

Probably not the best day to create this thread.

Say what you like about the booing and the game itself... but I think today will actually re-energise the Essendon vs Collingwood rivalry which has been a bit stale (yep, mostly due to my club) over recent years.

Collingwood and Richmond would be good on April 25. They have the largest support bases in the AFL.

Sheedy should’ve got Melbourne involved rather than Collingwood. Pity the Dees have a shocking on field history but to me it would suit the day more.
These sides had history back in the day and were 2 of 5 clubs to not play due to patriotic reasons during WW1.
Collingwood bring the crowds and I guess that’s what Sheedy was about but Melbourne would bring the respect.

I do like the OP saying Geelong is the most successful club though :)

Especially after this booing display by the fans post game here.
Usually I'm all for booing but theres a time and a place.

Have said it before and I'll say it again....Essendon and their fans....the scummiest, least classy embarrassments of the league.

Disgusting club, I'd be so ashamed to support the rats.

Yeah it would reflect really badly on you

Thank **** this thread wasn't started by a Geelong supporter.

It's Essendon and Collingwood, because those sides have the ability to draw a crowd while both playing like shit. Geelong - much as I love 'em - can't do that.
3rd highest Anzac Day crowd.
this is why we keep it. Plus, its been going so long now. quarter of a century.

tiresome argument that comes round every year.
We put a bloody good game on this year. with an excellent crowd
what more do you want?

Shouldn't be the same teams playing in a 5 year period. Throw every team in it. lol

Doesn't matter very much, 3 brownlow vote game would be worth more than an ANZAC medal.

Fremantle vs. Bulldogs 2020 ANZAC day game. :thumbsu:

Play it in Perth if you want a crowd, but even the Eagles couldnt pull a crowd on Good Friday.

Given all the best play in the AFL, only some of the best played in each of the State comps, 66 %.

Was referring more to the pre-AFL era.

SANFL/WAFL flags count as 50% of a VFL flag. (being generous to reduce the sooking).

First won is correct

92,000 at the MCG, when's the last time the Tigers got that for a home and away game if ever?

Richmond have only got 92,000 once way back in 1977 on Anzac Day but guess who they had to play to draw that crowd.....Collingwood

Collingwood and Essendon are the biggest clubs in Australia. Richmond are no way near as big as Collingwood or Essendon. Richmond have to rely on Collingwood, Essendon or Carlton to draw a huge crowd during the home and away season
