I actually reckon people have more of a right to take a kid to a football game without constant swearing than someone has the right to yell campaigner.

keep in mind Nat Edwards works for AFL.com, so she's effectively calling out her employer

Amazing how it hasn't been noticeable at all and crowds have still been typically loud this weekend. They were going bananas towards the end of the Carlton game.

Unless we see some actual evidence, I'm treating it as hyperbole. It's actually smart for Nat to call it out. AFL will look worse if they sack her and it feeds into the media scare. She's been all over the papers today.

Completely disagree. Just look at the initial response to this thread. People were upset about a guy getting kicked out for allegedly calling an umpire a homophobic remark.

Which part of 'bald-headed flog' is homophobic? Or was there a second incident?

Since you're going into bat tho, please address the AFL's flat denial of the obvious spike in monitoring and punishment of crowd behaviour.

Also, I'm not going to accuse you of being an AFL 'plant', but... Is the AFL going to issue a set of guidelines for fans to follow to avoid ejection? Surely any shift in policy should have been preceded by an information campaign to give fans a chance to ensure they don't fall foul of the new rules?

I kinda feel like you might know.

Why was the broadcaster only showing ethnic security guards on the telecast tonight?

Are they trying to make this a racial thing?

Or am I supposed to believe that the security guards are predominantly ethnic?

and there's your problem... where's the line and who decides?

People feel "uncomfortable" for a myriad of reasons
The invisible liminal delineation provides some expectation of harmony and safety when this is ambiguous and fragile. The individual allocated seating a significant change from bleachers and when the strong tribes and cheer squads would have a clear division, now juggling allocated tickets seem to make opposition supporters automatically generate a friction and tension. Previously, without selling us allocated seats, we managed to sort this out ourselves and find appropriate seating and standing - without fights combusting. One would think, with greater free-range-chicken-2-dimensional-spacing with allocated seats, actually is safer, whereas in reality the greater personal space allows(provokes) greater friction than we were shoulder2shoulder and neck2jowl in the bleachers.

It is about AFL hq seeking to draw every final dollar from fans. Surge demand-pricing on those seats 🙄. I don't mind free market principles and pricing individual seat(s) correctly, like courtside NBA finals seats, but Gillon, your person(s) are Jonathan Haidt NYU/Yale, Graeme Samuel, and John Elliott and Bill Kelty, NOT Waleed, smart as he is, but this requires old heads to tell Gillon wtf is occurring. In my theory, like sociologist Durkheim wrote on technical shifts and technology change when all he could know was trans continent railway, printingpress, and Manchester/Boston canton, three and a half centuries ago. Hipsters/newspeak/corporatespeak/donwatsonweasalwords would know this as
D I S R U P T I O N.

Think the afl need to talk to cricket Australia and ask them how the one dayer crowds have been the last 15 years when after they cracked down on the Mexican waves and other crowd antics

They simply would evict entire rows of people at a time, generally groups that would throw cups, etc. Anyone sculling a beer gets tossed too.

You been to a game recently (not even recently). It's pretty common.

I remember reading in early pages the culprit had also been making homophobic statements. May have just been rumours though.

Not sure if there's any actual evidence of the spike - all I've seen is hearsay. If there has been and they still choose to deny it, I find it as bewildering as you.
I kinda feel like you might know.
Why?

The security companies are rorting the visa systems and bringing in Indians en masse as cheap labour (and probably taking parts of their pay off them too like 7-11) much like the trucking industry.

Dirty stuff.

Also think there might be a bit of confirmation bias going on here. Reckon people are going to the game with the pre-conceived belief that there has been an unfair 'crackdown' and are looking for reasons and instances that support this notion. The answer is probably somewhere in the middle as it is in most things in life.

Yeah, I've chatted to a few blokes that were in security previously, and get the same story.

Totally agree. Security and cops used to go up and down the aisles at the SCG when I lived up there, and I've been living in Melbourne for 15+ years. Has there been an increase in recent weeks? Maybe, maybe not - I didn't notice anything different at the game I was at last weekend. Funnily enough, when they focus the cameras on it, you see it on TV.

Why is it smart for her to call it out? What does she gain?

And what constitutes "actual evidence" to you btw? It HAS been noticeable to a whole bunch of people that have gone to the footy this week so far...have u been reading the thread?
