I’m not sure what’s hard to grasp about this concept.

Sometimes two people want to spend their future together so they make decisions that will be mutually beneficial to their partnership. Hill’s options aren’t play for Fremantle or never earn a cent for the rest of his life. He could just go get paid by a Victorian club, she’d be happier, in turn he’d probably be happier, everyone wins.

I don’t understand this angle of “if you’re unhappy in the scenario you’re in that’s too bad, because your partner is well paid.”

Freo wins because they get some degree of compensation, and can continue to employ people who want are fully engaged with their pursuit of success. Freo wins because they get a reputation as a club that looks after players, not taking some 1800s approach of ‘you signed the contract so we own you’. Happy employees are much more valuable than unhappy employees.

The Eagles didn’t get compensated for Sam Mitchell breaking his contract. The Eagles didn’t get compensated for Brady Rawlings breaking his contract. The Eagles still ‘win’ in these situations because you gain the reputation as a club that treats their staff well, that puts an emphasis on off-field wellbeing, and therefore in future you’re more likely to attract quality staff. Nobody wants to go to a club that treats their employees like shit because they signed a piece of paper years ago and don’t acknowledge that situations change.

Dayne Beams requested a trade to Brisbane because his dad was dying. Is that a good enough reason in your eyes to break a contract? If it is, then you acknowledge that there are some reasons that are valid when requesting a trade. After that it’s up to individual clubs and players to privately figure out how serious their situation is.

Round 17 last year, Daniel Pearce and Michael Johnson were publicly retired by Ross in a routine press conference.

Since that 1923 games Sydney have lost to Essendon at the MCG 9 times.

Did Josh Carr end up back at Port? He certainly moved back to Adelaide and coached at Port I think?

But yeah, it's an odd one. Interstaters and WA boys alike decide that they need a change of scenery or want to move back home and Freo is the most willing club to oblige. Then after a couple years they find that the grass isn't always greener on the other side and realise how sh!t that club is and head back where they came from.

Has never happened to us.
